New 5-km tunnel to link South Delhi to NCR, cut congestion. Here are the details
The tunnel will connect Shiv Murti-Mahipalpur near Dwarka Expressway to Nelson Mandela Road in Vasant Kunj. The Rs 3,500-crore project will be executed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and is part of six major infrastructure projects cleared for Delhi by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
According to the Chief Minister's Office, the tunnel will comprise two underground tubes (one for each direction) with three lanes each, making a total of six lanes.
The tunnel is designed to offer a direct, signal-free corridor between South Delhi and Dwarka/Gurgaon, which is expected to help eliminate traffic jams on NH-48, especially during peak hours. It will also ease pressure on roads such as Nelson Mandela Road, Mahipalpur, Rangpuri, Dhaula Kuan, and Rao Tula Ram Marg.
It will be equipped with electro-mechanical systems, ventilation, fire safety mechanisms, CCTV surveillance, control rooms, emergency exits, and cross-passages.
'We are committed to making Delhi congestion-free and clean. The construction of this tunnel will reduce the burden on roads, eliminate traffic signals, and save fuel,' Gupta said. She described the project as 'the foundation for the Delhi of the future' and said it will play a crucial role in transforming the city's transport infrastructure.
The tunnel is part of a broader package of infrastructure works worth Rs 24,000 crore recently approved for Delhi following a meeting with Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari.
In the long term, the tunnel is expected to serve as a connector between Central and East Delhi and multiple national highways and expressways, including the Delhi-Katra Expressway (NE-5), NH-44, NH-10, Delhi-Jaipur Highway (NH-48), and Delhi-Dehradun Expressway (NH-709B), via the Urban Extension Road (UER) and Dwarka Expressway.
This integration is aimed at reducing traffic load on arterial roads and improving overall air quality in the region.
The Chief Minister's Office stated that all technical and formal clearances for the project are in the final stages, and work is expected to begin early next year.

Kin cremate caste killing victim's body after 5 days
Tirunelveli: The mortal remains of scheduled caste (SC) youth C Kavin Selva Ganesh were laid to rest at his native place, Arumugamangalam at Eral in Tuticorin district, on Friday as his family agreed to accept the body after protesting for more than five days. The family has been demanding justice for Kavin, who was murdered by his girlfriend's brother Surjith who opposed their relationship as the woman belonged to the most backward community. On Friday morning, Kavin's mortal remains were handed over to his parents and relatives at Tirunelveli govt medical college hospital after post-mortem. Municipal administration minister K N Nehru and Tirunelveli collector R Sukumar paid tributes to the body which was then transported to Arumugamangalam amid police security. A large number of villagers and relatives gathered for the cremation. Tuticorin MP K Kanimozhi, social welfare minister P Geetha Jeevan, fisheries minister Anitha R Radhakrishnan, Tuticorin collector K Elambahavath, and Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) leader Seeman consoled the family. Tamil Nadu State Commission for SC/STs chairperson S Tamilvanan handed over a cheque of Rs 6 lakh as compensation to Kavin's family and assured prompt legal action in the case. "We will pressure the state and central govts to enact a separate law for handling caste killings. Caste violence affects the whole society. Any woman above 18 years of age and man above 21 years of age should be free to pick their partner of their choice for marriage," said Tamilvanan, chairing a review meeting in Tirunelveli. He also recommended ensuring protection for Kavin's family. Kavin's murder case was transferred to CBCID on Wednesday. S Surjith, 21, the brother of S Subashini, the woman who was reportedly in a relationship with Kavin, was arrested for the murder and detained under the Goondas Act. Later, their father Saravanan, a police sub-inspector attached to Tamil Nadu Special Police (TSP), was also arrested. Their mother, Krishnakumari, who is also an SI attached to TSP, was suspended along with Saravanan but not arrested, though booked in the case. Tirunelveli city police have clarified that there were no previous police complaints against Kavin regarding the love affair and no police officer threatened Kavin or his family members.

26 years after shutting down lotteries, cash-strapped Himachal makes U-turn
KULLU: Cash-strapped Himachal Pradesh is trying its luck with lottery to turn its fortunes. The cabinet has allowed lottery operations, which were shut down in 1999. Burdened with a debt of over Rs 1 lakh crore, it hopes to make a modest Rs 50 crore to Rs 100 crore annually from sale of lottery tickets. The decision to reintroduce lotteries after over a quarter century was taken in a cabinet meeting on July 31. The recommendation came from a cabinet sub-committee set up to give suggestions to boost state revenue. The move seems to be inspired by other states that run lotteries. Neighbouring Punjab earned Rs 235 crore through sale of lottery tickets during the 2024-25 fiscal while the tiny state of Sikkim made Rs 30 crore. Kerala tops the list - the southern state earned a jaw-dropping Rs 13,582 crore last fiscal. Himachal, which is finding it difficult to meet the expenses of rebuilding the damage caused by this year's landslides and flash floods, hopes to mop up some much-needed funds this way. ITC sees marginal decline in net profit, revenue up 20%
1 2 Kolkata: ITC saw a marginal decline in net profit in the first quarter of FY26 to Rs 4,912 crore from Rs 4,917 crore in Q1FY25. Its revenue, however, saw a 20% jump from Rs 17,457 crore to Rs 20,911 crore. According to the company, the marginal decline in net profit was due to the demerger of its hotel business. Profit figures for Q1FY25 included Rs 97.5 crore from the hotels business. The conglomerate's profit would have been Rs 4,820 crore. The rise in revenue was largely due to cigarette and agri businesses as well as acquisitions. Net revenue of the cigarettes segment was up 7.7% year-on-year, with segment profit before interest and tax (PBIT) was up 3.7% year-on-year. "As seen in the past, stability in taxes on cigarettes, backed by deterrent actions by enforcement agencies, enabled volume recovery for the legal cigarette industry from illicit trade, leading to higher demand for Indian tobaccos and bolstering revenue to the exchequer from the tobacco sector," the company said.
