Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Games (Saga) Papar women's football team has made history by clinching the West-South Coast Zone qualifying round title after a thrilling three-day tournament at Padang Sukma A, Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex, from June 2. Competing against teams from Ranau and Penampang, the Papar squad secured their victory with a 1-1 draw against Ranau and a decisive 3-1 win over Penampang.
Advertisement Assistant Manager cum Coach Jenny Binjamis hailed the team's debut performance, singling out Nichelle Pearl Janiri Sipaji as the standout player for scoring all four of Papar's goals. 'Every player contributed to this victory, securing our spot in the Saga XI finals in Tawau this October,' said Jenny, who also praised the coaching staff Freddy Wong, John Tan Johnsun @ Ajung, and Kendy Koton for their dedication in guiding the team to success. Royal Sabah Turf Club cup races celebrate the festive spirit

Kota Kinabalu: Royal Sabah Turf Club (RSTC) successfully organised the Harvest Festival Mile Cup and Sprint Cup at the Tambalang Racecourse in Tuaran on June 1. The event was celebrated in a lively atmosphere, full of sportsmanship and excitement. To mark the occasion, RSTC carried out a symbolic welcoming ceremony, featuring five horses ridden by Bajau riders, known as 'Oriental Cowboys'. This gesture was meant to honour the guests and showcase Sabah's rich cultural heritage. David's Sling secured victory in the 1,600-metre Harvest Festival Mile Cup, while Easylights was crowned champion of the 1,200-metre Sprint Cup. Ewon personally presented the trophies to the Mile Cup winners, adding a special touch to the event, while Wong presented prizes to the winners of the Sprint race. Esfa to hold another football clinic in Keningau

Kota Kinabalu: The Ex State Footballers Association (Esfa) will be organising a basic football skills clinic for 12 to 15-year-old students at SMK Sook in Keningau on June 14-15. A total of 60 boys and 30 girls from SMK Sook and also from SMK Tulid are expected to participate in the programme to be conducted by Yap Wai Loon and Harun Laban for the boys and Suharmin Yusof and Cyril Gom for the girls with assistance from two school teachers. Advertisement Esfa president Datuk James Wong said they had been requested by both schools to hold the clinic following the success of an earlier clinic held at SMK Gunsanad II in Keningau in April. 'We are more than happy to oblige their request. It is very encouraging to note that our programme to conduct such clinics in schools throughout the State to assist Sabah Football Association (Safa) in the development of football received such positive response. 'I believe with the knowledge and experiences of our coaches, the clinic will not only benefit the participants but also the teachers assigned, who will no doubt gain some valuable coaching tips,' he said. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: National mixed doubles shuttlers Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei came from a game down today to defeat Danish pair Mads Vestergaard-Christine Busch Andreasen and enter the Indonesia Open semi-finals. The Malaysian world No 4 dug deep into their reserves before overcoming the 27th ranked Danish pair 17-21, 21-16, 21-14 in a 50-minute battle – their first encounter in international tournaments. Advertisement Tang Jie-Ee Wei, reunited after a brief separation by the Badminton Association of Malaysia, showed glimpses of their old form, indicating that they are contenders for the Indonesia Open Super 1000 series title. In the semi-finals, Tang Jie-Ee Wei will meet world No 6 Thai pair Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran, who defeated Malaysia's world No 5 shuttlers Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie in straight sets. The married couple lost 16-21, 12-21 to Dechapol-Supissara in a match that lasted only 33 minutes. The pairs have met eight times this year with Dechapol-Supissara winning five of the encounters.
