Ghana temporarily shuts embassy in US over alleged visa scandal
Ghana's Foreign Affairs Minister has announced that the country has temporarily closed its embassy in the US capital amid an investigation into an alleged visa scam.
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said the embassy will be shut following the "damning findings" of an audit team he put together to investigate alleged corruption at the Washington diplomatic mission.
The statement added that the closure would last "a few days" until a "restructuring and systems overhaul" is finalised.
According to Ablakwa, a locally recruited staff member and "collaborators" were allegedly involved in a "fraudulent" scheme whereby they extracted money from visa and passport applicants.
It is alleged that the scheme consisted of creating an unauthorised link on the embassy's website to redirect visa and passport applicants to a private firm where they were "charged extra for multiple services" without the knowledge of the foreign ministry.
Ablakwa added that the staff member "kept the entire proceeds" in their private account, and that the scheme had been going on for five years.
Applicants seeking visas were charged unapproved fees ranging from almost $30 (£22) to $60 by the private firm.
"This conduct has been reported to the attorney-general for possible prosecution and retrieval of funds obtained through fraudulent schemes," Ablakwa added.
As a result, foreign ministry staff in Washington "have been recalled home" and "all locally recruited staff at the embassy have been suspended", Ablakwa said.
"President [John] Mahama's government will continue to demonstrate zero tolerance for corruption, naked conflict of interest and blatant abuse of office."

2 women hospitalized, one with life-threatening injuries, after Marathon County house fire
HATLEY − Two women were hospitalized June 3 from injuries they received in an early morning house fire in Marathon County. At 12:04 a.m. June 3, a caller reported a house fire with someone possibly trapped inside in the 200 block of Kirkwood St. in the Marathon County village of Hatley, about 20 miles southeast of Wausau. Deputies from the Marathon County Sheriff's Office and the Hatley Fire Department and EMS arrived to find smoke coming from the single-family home, according to a news release from the Sheriff's Office. A 67-year-old woman told responders a 57-year-old woman was still inside the home. Deputies and firefighters successfully located the 57-year-old woman and removed her from the house. She was treated at the scene before being taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to the Sheriff's Office. The 67-year-old woman also was treated at the scene for severe burns before being taken to UW Health University Hospital for further medical care, according to Sheriff's Office. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The Ringle Fire Department, Birnamwood Fire and EMS, South Area Fire and Emergency Response District, Riverside EMS and Mountain Bay Police Department assisted at the scene. Wausau daycare owner charged after baby in care suffers skull fracture and brain bleeding
WAUSAU − A home daycare operator is facing a felony charge after a 4-month-old baby she cared for was hospitalized with a skull fracture, brain bleeding and a hemorrhage in her eye. Shawna L. Munguia, 35, of Wausau, faces a charge of physical abuse of a child recklessly causing great bodily harm. Marathon County Circuit Judge Rick Cveykus set a $2,500 cash bail June 2 during Manguia's initial appearance. She's scheduled for a hearing on June 9. According to the criminal complaint, at 12:55 a.m. May 15, a woman brought her 4-month-old daughter to a Wausau hospital after the baby began throwing up. The baby was then transferred to Marshfield Medical Center in Marshfield. The mother said her baby had been at an in-home daycare center run by Munguia on May 14. When the mother went to pick the baby up at 4:30 p.m. May 14, she saw light bruising on the top of the baby's head, and Munguia said a child had fallen into Munguia while Munguia was holding the baby, causing the injury, according to the complaint. A doctor told detectives the injuries could not have happened from the incident Munguia described, according to the complaint. Detectives interviewed Munguia, who told them she didn't know how the baby got the injuries. When officers said the baby couldn't have been so seriously hurt from the child falling into Munguia, she said another child had fallen on the baby 10 times, according to the complaint. Detectives showed Munguia a text message she had sent her husband stating that she was caring for a baby who wouldn't stop crying. The detective said the message sounded like Munguia was frustrated, according to the complaint. Munguia admitted she had become frustrated when all the other children were down for naps, but the baby wouldn't stop crying. She said she picked the baby up from the couch, shook her and told her to stop crying, according to the complaint. Munguia said she didn't remember how many times she shook the baby back and forth, but she didn't think it was many times. The detectives then arrested Munguia on suspicion of child abuse recklessly causing great bodily harm. Diddy Trial Sees Heckler Disrupt Court as Judge Learns Anonymous Witness' Name Leaked Online
Disturbances were abound at the federal criminal trial of Sean 'Diddy Combs' on Tuesday, as a woman viewing the rap mogul's sex trafficking and racketeering trial from the gallery shouted out in the middle of open court about the defendant, disrupting ongoing testimony in the fifth week of proceedings, and the trial's judge discovered that the name of 'Mia,' a pseudonymous witness, was leaked online. The heckler on Tuesday is a woman named Jacqueline 'Candor' Williams, who has been a regular inside and outside of the courthouse at 500 Pearl Street in Lower Manhattan. She has been a fixture there, speaking to a smartphone in the front of the courthouse where members of the press await the departure of Combs' mother and sons each day; she's also been present in the court's overflow room where press and members of the public watch the untelevised trial on medium-sized closed circuit TV screens. On Tuesday, Williams secured a seat in the courtroom where the trial was being held. Combs remained calm as this all occurred, but as Williams and another witness inside the courtroom told reporter Emilie Hagan, the jailed mogul pivoted in his chair with his mouth open when he heard Williams mention a security guard's gun. Judge Arun Subramanian quickly ordered the woman removed from the courtroom. Williams said that she has been told not to return to the trial room but that she is still allowed to view proceedings from the overflow room. The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Williams via Instagram but did not immediately receive a reply. Her outburst caused a minor delay, and it occurred prior to the start of testimony from Eddy Garcia, a Los Angeles hotel security employee, when the 2016 incident occurred where Combs beat and dragged ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura in L.A., all of which was caught on security footage. Garcia was a 33-year-old security guard at the Intercontinental Hotel in Los Angeles in 2016. He testified about speaking with a nervous-sounding Combs and his chief of staff, Kristina Khorram, about the footage of the rap mogul viciously beating then-girlfriend Ventura in a hallway there nearly a decade ago. He told the court he ultimately accepted $100,000 for what he believed was the only footage of the horrific incident. Garcia testified that he split the money with a manager and another staff member, another guard; however, he had filmed the footage to show to his wife, and video of Combs attacking Ventura eventually leaked to CNN. Garcia's testimony followed that of 'Mia,' a former personal assistant of Combs who used a pseudonym in court as part of her testimony, which included discussion of several alleged incidents where she says she was raped or sexually assaulted by Combs. On Tuesday, the identity of 'Mia' was leaked online by a YouTube streamer and posted on X (formerly Twitter) by another outlet. Prosecutor Maurene Comey raised the state's concerns about the leaked name after the YouTube streamer shared Mia's identity; the streamer has now been barred from the federal court and will no longer be able to cover court proceedings. Comey told the judge that a second outlet had posted the real name of 'Mia' on X and requested that the judge ensure the post was removed and the source who posted it online was barred from court. The state prosecutors have been asked to draft a possible court order for consideration. Combs was federally indicted on charges of sex trafficking, racketeering and transportation to engage in prostitution in September and has been held in a Brooklyn federal jailhouse since then. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
