Ringgit extends gains ahead of US CPI data release

The Star2 days ago
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit maintained its upward momentum against the US dollar and other major currencies, as traders and investors awaited the release of the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) tonight.
At 6 pm, the local note strengthened to 4.2290/2320, an increase of 0.08 per cent against the greenback from Monday's close of 4.2320/2360.
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said higher-than-expected July readings could prompt the US Federal Reserve to reconsider cutting the Federal Funds Rate at its Federal Open Market Committee meeting in September.
He said the final estimate for Malaysia's second-quarter (2Q) gross domestic product (GDP) would also be closely monitored.
The Industrial Production Index as well as Index of Services and Construction Work Done for 2Q indicate that the final GDP figure could come in lower than the official advance estimate of 4.5 per cent.
"Our estimates showed that GDP in 2Q could settle at 4.3 per cent. As such, the growth trajectory will determine the degree of monetary accommodativeness in light of the weaker economic outlook globally,' he told Bernama.
At the close, the ringgit ended firmer against major currencies.
It edged up versus the Japanese yen to 2.8490/8512 from Monday's close of 2.8657/8686, improved against the euro to 4.9090/9125 from 4.9269/9316 yesterday and increased vis-a-vis the British pound to 5.6905/6946 from 5.6933/6987.
The ringgit also traded higher against regional peers.
It advanced against the Singapore dollar to 3.2867/2893 from 3.2936/2973 at yesterday's close and strengthened versus the Thai baht to 13.0135/0300 from 13.0569/0769.
The local note also appreciated versus the Indonesian rupiah to 259.6/259.9 from 259.9/260.3 previously and rose vis-a-vis the Philippine peso to 7.41/7.42 from 7.42/7.43. - Bernama

Petronas Chemicals Shares Down Following Weaker 2Q 2025 Results

REGION - CENTRAL > NEWS KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- Petronas Chemicals Group Bhd (PCG) shares were lower following weaker results in the second quarter ended June 30, 2025 (2Q 2025) after reporting a net loss of RM1.08 billion compared with a net profit of RM777 million a year ago. The integrated chemicals producer said the net loss was due to lower earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA), asset impairment at Perstorp Holding AB, unrealised foreign exchange loss after revaluing shareholders' loan to Pengerang Petrochemical Company Sdn Bhd (PPCSB) and finance expenses from payment adjustments for trade payables at PPCSB. Its revenue fell by 17 per cent to RM6.44 billion from RM7.73 billion previously, mainly due to lower sales volume, the strengthening of the ringgit against the US dollar and lower product prices. bootstrap slideshow At 10.33 am, PCG share price eased two sen or 0.28 per cent to RM3.58 with 3.77 million shares traded. The counter opened at RM3.55. In a research note today, CIMB Securities Sdn Bhd said overall results fell short of its consensus expectations, with the key variance stemming from lower-than-expected plant utilisation. 'We have cut our FY 2025, FY 2026, and FY2027 forecast earnings by 11.8 per cent, 9.1 per cent, and 8.1 per cent, respectively, to reflect the weaker-than-expected 2Q 2025 results. 'We maintain our 'Hold' rating while lowering our target price (TP) to RM3.45 per share,' it added. Maybank Investment Bank Bhd said PCG turning in a net loss in 2Q 2025 is pretty much in line with its views in early July 2025.

KPDN Targeting 100,000 New Price Catcher Users By Year-end

By Nurfardlina Izzati Moktar KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) aims to attract at least 100,000 new users to the Price Catcher application by year-end, adding to the more than 552,000 downloads recorded so far. Its Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh expressed confidence that the target could be achieved, noting that the Price Catcher application, introduced in 2019 as a price comparison platform, has proven highly useful in helping users make informed decisions when purchasing daily necessities. She said that of the total number of registered users, only 62 per cent actively used the application, indicating that awareness of the Price Catcher platform remains low. 'I believe there are several factors contributing to this, including consumer habits, but the entire responsibility should not rest on consumers alone. Advocacy is a shared responsibility involving the ministry, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), consumers, and the community as a whole. 'It cannot be assumed that consumers are unaware simply because they do not want to know. It is the responsibility of all parties to ensure greater awareness of the application's use,' she said in an exclusive interview with Bernama recently. In this regard, Fuziah said KPDN continues to enhance the application to help consumers better understand the pricing of goods and use it as a tool for making informed purchasing decisions. 'We cannot control all prices, as we operate in a free market economy where prices are determined by supply and demand. However, consumers still have the power to choose. She added that KPDN is also actively promoting the application through consumer advocacy initiatives such as the Buy Malaysian Goods Carnival, KPDN Tour, MADANI Rakyat Programme, and Rahmah Sales, among others.
