Shapoorji Pallonji Group stock to be in focus on Tuesday on bagging ₹6,800 crore order. Details here

Afcons Infrastructure, the flagship infrastructure, engineering, and construction company of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group, announced today that it has emerged as the Lowest Bidder (L1) for the rehabilitation and construction of a railway line in the Republic of Croatia, which is valued at ₹ 6800 crore. In a regulatory filing today, the company said the project was awarded by HŽ Infrastructure Ltd. The order involves the reconstruction of the existing railway line and construction of a second track on the Dugo Selo–Novska section, including overhead electrification, signaling, and telecommunication works. This marks the company's second order win in less than a week. On July 18, it had emerged as the lowest bidder for two road construction packages in Croatia worth ₹ 4,535 crore. Afcons has been securing significant orders in recent months. In early June, it received a ₹ 700 crore contract from Reliance Industries for construction work related to its Vinyl Projects in Dahej, Gujarat. In May, the company was declared the lowest bidder (L1) for a ₹ 463.50 crore water supply project covering 353 villages in Dungarpur district, titled 'Kadana Back Water (Mahi Dam) Package-1.' Afcons Infrastructure debuted on Indian stock exchanges in November last year, with its shares listing at ₹ 426.00 apiece, an 8% discount to the issue price of ₹ 463, as the IPO saw lukewarm demand from retail investors. Since its listing, the stock has remained volatile. At the current trading price of ₹ 418 apiece, it is down about 10% from the IPO price and nearly 26.6% below its recent high of ₹ 570. Despite the stock's lack of clear upward direction, analysts remain optimistic about the company's growth prospects, citing its growing order book, strong track record in executing complex and unique EPC projects both in India and abroad, and stable financial performance over the years. Commerce ministry weighs GST rationalization for motion-lit toys

New Delhi: Beep beep. India's ambition to become a global toy hub has run into a problem – children's scooters. The matter concerns a category called non-motorized 'mobility scooters' – the kind children zip round on, whether sitting or standing. Those fitted with lights are taxed at 18%, whereas those without lights attract only a 12% Goods and Services Tax (GST). Indian toy manufacturers say the higher rate is arbitrary and runs counter to the government's aim of promoting domestic toy production for global markets, two people aware of the matter told Mint. The matter is being dealt with by the commerce ministry, they said. The complaint comes even as the government aims to boost toy exports, which are set for a boost after the finalization of trade agreements with the UK, US, and EU. 'There is a flat 18% GST on products that fall under the electronics category. However, in the case of mobility toys, there is no change in the features or characteristics of the toy. Its function remains the same, and the lights are produced through magnets by friction, without the use of any battery or electronic component,' said Rajeev Batra, treasurer of the Toys Association of India (TAI) and director of Kiddies Centre, a toy trading company. 'The essential functions of the toys remain the same, and only some add-on features are included. A four-wheeled car continues to attract 18% GST, even though it includes components like batteries or audio systems that fall under higher GST categories. However, in the case of toys, if a simple feature like a horn is added, the GST rate jumps from 12% to 18%. This inconsistency needs to be addressed,' said Batra. Queries sent to the spokespersons of the commerce ministry and the GST Secretariat remained unanswered at press time. The lights on mobility scooters are not battery-operated but powered by motion through magnets—an added feature that costs barely about ₹ 20 per unit, said an industry representative who wished to remain unnamed. While these lights enhance the toy's appeal, the increased tax burden is discouraging manufacturers from making such versions. The government is trying to find a workable solution after consultations with stakeholders, which will then be recommended to the GST Council, said one of the two people cited above. 'The proposal is currently under consideration by the ministry,' said the second person. 'This (anomaly) not only discourages manufacturers from adding value but also limits affordable access to engaging, educational, and interactive toys for Indian children. At a time when India aims to become a global toy hub, such policies risk stifling creativity and competitiveness,' said Vivek Singhal, CEO, Bidso --a B2B manufacturer of outdoor toys. Indian toys are gaining global popularity, with exports rising from ₹ 1,260.88 crore ($151.9 million) in 2023–24 to ₹ 1,430.82 crore ($172.4 million) in 2024–25, as per commerce ministry data. Imports during the same period saw a modest increase—from ₹ 537.52 crore ($64.7 million) to ₹ 626.21 crore ($75.4 million). To convert the figures into USD, an exchange rate of ₹ 83 per dollar has been used. While toy exports grew 13.5% year-on-year over the period FY2023–24 to FY2024–25, industry figures say that policy support—such as GST rationalization, export incentives, and global trade deals—could help unlock a new phase of expansion. The global toy market is projected to reach $179.4 billion by 2032, according to a report by Punjab National Bank (PNB) published in February 2025. Commerce & industry minister Piyush Goyal had on 4 July announced that the government is close to finalizing a dedicated scheme to boost toy production. 'The scheme would focus on strengthening design capabilities, improving quality manufacturing, enhancing packaging standards, and facilitating brand-building efforts,' Goyal had said. India's toy industry, once heavily import-dependent, is now manufacturing exporting to 153 countries. According to an India Exim Bank report, the sector remains highly fragmented, with about 90% of the market dominated by the unorganized segment. While global players like Mattel and Lego operate in India, the industry is largely driven by over 4,000 MSME units concentrated in clusters across NCR, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and other regions, as per the report.

Mahindra Industrial Park, Sumitomo Corp sign strategic deal with Osaka govt

In a significant step towards strengthening India–Japan industrial collaboration, Mahindra Industrial Park Chennai Limited (MIPCL), the developer and operator of Origins by Mahindra, along with its 40 per cent stakeholder and marketing arm in Japan, Sumitomo Corporation, has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Osaka Prefecture and the Osaka Industrial Development Bureau (a public interest incorporated foundation that supports Japanese companies based in Osaka in expanding their footprint in India). This milestone partnership reinforces Mahindra's commitment to facilitating high-quality global investment into India's manufacturing sector and positions Tamil Nadu as a preferred destination for Japanese industry. Through this agreement, MIPCL and Sumitomo Corporation will work closely with public institutions to serve as local facilitators for Osaka-based companies exploring opportunities in India. As part of the collaboration, MIPCL and Sumitomo Corporation will support business visits, provide on-ground consultation, and participate in knowledge-sharing seminars hosted in Osaka. The Osaka authorities, in turn, will identify and recommend companies interested in expanding into India, ensuring necessary permissions are in place to facilitate a streamlined entry process for Japanese manufacturers. India, with its projected GDP growth of 6.3 per cent in FY2025 as forecast by the World Bank, remains a powerful draw for international business. As a rising leader in the Global South, India is increasingly seen as a long-term partner for global supply chains. Chennai, in particular, has become a hub of industrial activity due to its strong port connectivity, ease of access to Southeast Asia, and growing presence of automotive, electronics, and semiconductor companies. Origins by Mahindra, Chennai, already hosts six Japanese clients and offers world-class infrastructure and a stable policy environment. The collaboration in Chennai will further strengthen these efforts by enabling tailored support for businesses evaluating the Indian market. MIPCL, backed by Mahindra Lifespaces' deep knowledge of Indian industry, will play a key role in helping Japanese firms navigate regulatory frameworks, secure land and utilities, and scale up operations with confidence. Amit Kumar Sinha, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mahindra Lifespace Developers Ltd., said, 'This partnership reflects our vision to build future-ready ecosystems that align with India's manufacturing ambitions. It also underscores our focus on setting new benchmarks through successful Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), enabling long-term, sustainable industrial progress. The expansion strengthens India's industrial ecosystem and supports economic growth.' Vikram Goel, Chief Business Officer (Industrial), Mahindra Lifespace Developers Ltd., said, 'This engagement with Osaka Prefecture marks a milestone in our efforts to enable global investments into India through our industrial ecosystems. Origins by Mahindra, Chennai, has been developed to meet the needs of international manufacturers, offering operational readiness, regulatory support, and integrated infrastructure. Through this collaboration, we are well-positioned to support the specific requirements of diverse companies while also deepening the socio-economic impact of our industrial cluster in Tamil Nadu.' The agreement underlines the spirit of cooperation and mutual interest shared by all parties. By aligning strategic intent with operational expertise, this partnership marks a new chapter in Mahindra's efforts to attract and enable world-class manufacturing in India.
