
Airbus Broughton workers in strike ballot
Airbus workers at Broughton in Flintshire and Filton near Bristol could walk out unless they receive an improved pay offer. Over three thousand aircraft fitters and engineers at the aerospace giant are being balloted from today for industrial action in a dispute over pay.
The workers are members of Unite, who said this follows a series of "unacceptable pay offers". They added that they hoped Airbus will return to the negotiating table and a mutually acceptable agreement can be reached.
The highly skilled workers play a critical role in the production of aircraft wings for the hugely successful A320 family, A330, A350 and A400M military transport aircraft - core programmes in Airbus's global operations.
Airbus said they had made a "competitive and fair pay offer".
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: 'Airbus has posted billions in profit and continues to report record aircraft orders. Workers are still struggling with the cost-of-living crisis and this unacceptable pay offer is simply not good enough. Airbus needs to get back round the negotiating table with an offer our members can accept.'
Unite national officer Rhys McCarthy said: 'There is no justification for denying the workforce — whose skills and dedication drive Airbus' success — a pay rise that reflects both the cost-of-living pressures and inflation.
'Workers are balloting for industrial action as a last resort, due to stalled negotiations. Unite remains fully committed to resolving this dispute through negotiation and stands ready to return to talks with Airbus to secure an agreement which is acceptable to both sides.'
The ballot will run until 24 July. If members vote in favour, strike action could begin in September, with dates to be confirmed.
Sue Partridge, Airbus UK Country Manager, Commercial Aircraft,. said: "We have made a competitive and fair pay offer in 2025. Our revised one year offer to our blue collar employees (3.3% with a further 0.3% in January 2026) is in addition to the £2,644 success bonus payment employees received in April. This builds on the strong foundations of pay increases that total 20% in the last three years.
"Our priority continues to be supporting our employees and ensuring the long-term success and stability of Airbus Commercial Aircraft in the UK.
"It remains business as usual across our operations."
Airbus said a two year deal of 3.6% followed by 3.1% was accepted by 'white collar' colleagues.

July 1 (Reuters) - Boeing (BA.N), opens new tab is set to take over the non-Airbus portion of Spirit AeroSystems' (SPR.N), opens new tab operations in Belfast, Northern Ireland, after attempts to find a buyer for the site fell through, a Spirit spokesperson said on Tuesday. In April, European planemaker Airbus ( opens new tab finalized a deal to acquire several Spirit AeroSystems facilities tied to its aircraft programs. Under the terms of the agreement Spirit reached with Airbus, the engineering programs for the A220 wing and A350 engineering program are expected to transfer to the European planemaker, Spirit Aero spokesperson Joe Buccino told Reuters. "If a suitable third-party buyer is not secured for the remainder of the Belfast site, the A220 mid-fuselage program transfers to Airbus, with the remaining Belfast operations transferring to Boeing." Last year, Boeing agreed to buy back Spirit in a $4.7 billion all-stock deal, aiming to streamline its operations and improving quality control, years after spinning off the key supplier. With no buyer secured for the remaining Belfast operations, the facility is now expected to be transferred to Boeing, Buccino said. A Boeing spokesperson told Reuters that the company "remains committed to its acquisition of Spirit AeroSystems" and that "taking ownership of Belfast is an outcome we've known was a possibility for some time." The site also produces aerostructures components for Bombardier ( opens new tab business jets. The Canadian planemaker is "very actively engaged with all parties to ensure continuity and quality," company spokesperson Mark Masluch told Reuters. "We remain open to all solutions regarding the site's future," Masluch added, not fully ruling out a potential acquisition. The news was first reported by the Financial Times earlier in the day.

Glasgow hotel staff could strike over pay and conditions
Unite members at the four-star Village on Pacific Drive will vote on whether to take action after the company said it would not enter into talks on pay, contracts and conditions. Should the ballot be successful, it's believed it would be the first strike action in a major hotel chain for close to 50 years. The union had sought talks on securing the real living wage of £12.60 per hour for its members, as well as paid breaks. In addition, Unite sought a pay uplift and backpay for a small number of under-21 staff who receive less per hour than Village Hotels employees in Edinburgh. It's understood the company told reps it saw "no benefit" in meeting for talks. In an email sent to staff, seen by The Herald, Village confirmed it would not be raising rates of pay and pointed to existing employee benefits such as gym and spa memberships, discounted hotel rooms and high street shopping discounts. Senior operations director for Scotland and the North Jamie Stevens said: "We continue to review the benefits that we provide to you, but at this stage, making wholesale changes to pay rates across the business, and paying for time taken on breaks, isn't financially achievable for the company without it adversely impacting on our ability to provide these other benefits." Village Hotels last month announced the expansion of its senior leadership team as part of an £82m refurbishment and investment programme. In its letter to staff Village Hotels said: "Whilst we respect the right of our employees to support industrial action, we hope you recognise the effort we put into our employee proposition, and that we all continue to operate without disruption for our guests and members. "We hope you share our goals in protecting the value our business offers to you as members of our team, and to all of those individuals who experience the hospitality and quality of service which you provide at Glasgow." Bryan Simpson, Unite the Union's Lead for Hospitality said: "For one of Britain's best known hotel chains to point blank refuse to negotiate with their workers over the real living wage, equal pay and paid breaks is bad enough. But to use as an excuse the fact that the hospitality sector is the lowest paid and most exploitative in the British economy is a scandal that all Village customers should be aware of. "All our members at Village in Glasgow are asking for is a say in their own pay and conditions which are far too low. The attitude of senior management at Village has forced those members to now consider the first strike action at a major hotel chain since 1979." Village Hotels has been approached for comment.
