Wisconsin football secures commitment from top-ranked four-star 2026 wide receiver

Yahoo20-07-2025
Wisconsin football secured a commitment from top-ranked class of 2026 wide receiver Jayden Petit on Thursday.
Petit, a coveted four-star pass-catcher, immediately becomes the highest-rated recruit to commit to Luke Fickell's class of 2026 cohort. The 6-foot-4, 195-pound wide receiver chose the Badgers over opportunities with the Oklahoma Sooners, North Carolina Tar Heels, Missouri Tigers and Tennessee Volunteers.
The Naples, Florida, product officially visited Madison the weekend of May 30 before returning to Wisconsin for another visit early last week. Petit also committed to Fickell's program despite official visits with the Sooners and Tar Heels on June 6 and 13, respectively, in addition to another official visit with Missouri on June 20.
247Sports lists Petit as the No. 209 player in the class of 2026, No. 31 wide receiver and No. 30 recruit from the state of Florida. During his senior year at First Baptist Academy, he logged 50 receptions for 777 yards and 12 scores, highlighted by a 146-yard, three-touchdown performance on Oct. 18.
Here's 247Sports' Director of Scouring Andrew Ivins' scouting report of Wisconsin's newest class of 2026 commit:
"Big-framed wide receiver that can win on the perimeter with his suddenness, coordination and bounce... Attacks leverage with his initial burst and does an admirable job of sinking his hips at the top of routes to break off defensive backs before driving back towards the football. Likes to mix speeds as he works his way up or across the field. Spirited after the catch as he has flashed the ability to make the first defender miss while facing a lower level of competition in the Sunshine State and will put the effort in as a move blocker on the outside. Already pushing 200 pounds, but doesn't appear to be maxed out and could undergo a further physical maturation once he's done with basketball. Might not be the fastest target and must keep perfecting his craft, but has the size, athleticism and ball skills to emerge as a trusted option at the Power Four level in a balanced offense that relies on timing."
Wisconsin's class of 2026 now rises to No. 44 in the nation following Petit's commitment. The 14-man class also includes three-star wide receiver prospects Tayshon Bardo and Zion Legree.
Petit's decision marks UW's first commitment since June 15. Fickell and company will now hone in on securing commitments from athlete Jackson Ford, running back Amari Latimer and offensive tackle Kamari Blair in the coming days. Regardless of what transpires, Petit is the first blue-chip to offer his pledge to UW for this cycle - a major win for Wisconsin's recruiting staff.

Wisconsin football offers one of Sacramento State's class of 2027 commits

Wisconsin football extended an offer to class of 2027 wide receiver Chance McPike Jr. on Monday. Notably, McPike committed to Sacramento State on July 4. His offer sheet has grown since that date, with Wisconsin, Purdue and Eastern Kentucky all joining his recruitment. The Paducah, Kentucky, native also holds offers from Kentucky, Michigan State, Missouri, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Tennessee and others. 247Sports has yet to assign a star rating or position ranking to the 6-foot-1 wide receiver. Despite his commitment to Sacramento State, On3/Rivals lists Missouri as the current favorite in his recruitment at 50%, with Ole Miss (22.9%) and Tennessee (19.6%) also top contenders. McPike Jr. joins Wisconsin's loaded group of wide receiver offers in the class of 2027. That list also includes five-star prospects Monshun Sales and Lawrence Britt, as well as top-ranked four-stars Myles McAfee, Quentin Burrell, Kesean Bowman (Oregon commit), Dakota Guerrant and Damani Warren. Wisconsin has yet to land a commitment in the 2027 cycle. Its primary focus remains on 2026, where the program's class of 14 commitments ranks just No. 60 nationally and No. 16 in the Big Ten. Sean Payton: Dre Greenlaw plays like Mike Tyson

Linebacker Dre Greenlaw made the most of the first day in pads at Broncos training camp. Greenlaw filled gaps and delivered hits throughout team drills in Denver and head coach Sean Payton said you didn't even have to be watching to know that Greenlaw was the one landing blows. Payton said "you can hear it" when Greenlaw makes a hit and then went on to compare his style to another knockout artist from a different sport. "He plays like Mike Tyson," Payton said, via the team's website. "He's tough, he's physical. He's built that way. There's not a lot of leaky yardage. Some guys [allow that]. He's a knock-back tackler. They stop where he hits them. There's an intensity to how he plays. He's one of those players that if you put the film on and didn't say anything, at some point early, you'd ask, 'Who is this guy?'" Greenlaw was limited to two games for the 49ers last year because of injuries and a quad injury interrupted his first offseason in Denver, so one key for the Broncos will be making sure Greenlaw's healthy enough to deploy that physicality on a regular basis. If he is, facing an already tough Broncos defense will be even less enjoyable for opposing offenses in 2025.

Commanders put OL Nate Herbig on reserve/retired list

Veteran offensive lineman Nate Herbig is walking away from football. Herbig signed with the Commanders this offseason, but the team announced on Tuesday morning that he has been placed on the team's reserve/retired list. He will no longer count against the team's 90-man roster limit. Herbig spent the last two seasons with the Steelers, but did not play at all in 2024 after a rotator cuff injury. Herbig appeared in 17 games for the Steelers in 2023 and he started 11 games at guard for the Jets in 2022. The Eagles signed Herbig as an undrafted free agent in 2019 and he started 17 of the 33 games he played while with Philadelphia. Nick Allegretti and Chris Paul remain on hand as depth options at guard in Washington.
