Minnesota Vikings show support for their male cheerleaders amid backlash

NBC News7 hours ago
The Minnesota Vikings are showing support for the team's two male cheerleaders, Blaize Shiek and Louie Conn, who have faced homophobic and hateful backlash since being announced as members of the 2025 squad.
As the start of the 2025 NFL season approaches, football fans have been enjoying seeing the players, coaches, cheerleaders and other members of the organization make their way back to their home stadiums for the pre-season. The Minnesota Vikings, like other teams, have been feeding into the excitement by posting content on social media highlighting its members. On Aug. 9, the Vikings and the team's official account for its cheerleading squad shared a video on Instagram introducing all the cheerleaders on its roster.
In the clip, the entire squad, including male cheerleaders Shiek and Conn, can be seen nailing the routine and shaking their pompoms.
'The next generation of cheer has arrived!' the caption read.
While many fans celebrated seeing inclusivity on the sidelines, some filled the comments with offensive remarks and threats of withdrawing their support.
The Vikings responded to the vitriol in a statement obtained by TODAY.com.
'While many fans may be seeing male cheerleaders for the first time at Vikings games, male cheerleaders have been part of previous Vikings teams and have long been associated with collegiate and professional cheerleading. In 2025, approximately one third of NFL teams have male cheerleaders,' the team said. 'Every member of the Minnesota Vikings Cheerleaders program has an impressive dance background and went through the same rigorous audition process. Individuals were selected because of their talent, passion for dance and dedication to elevating the game day experience.'
The team concluded, 'We support all our cheerleaders and are proud of the role they play as ambassadors of the organization.'
Instead of letting the comments negatively affect them, Shiek and Conn chose to rise above it.
The two uploaded a joint Instagram post on Saturday that showed them posing in their cheer uniforms. 'Wait…did someone say our name?' they cheekily wrote in the caption.
Fans left some encouraging words in the comments.
'Yesss!!! Literal icons! Let the haters talk and y'all keep SHINING!' one said. 'I know I speak for so many when I say I'm so excited to watch y'all show up & SHOW OUT this season!!'
Another wrote, 'I noticed you both immediately when you first took the field. Not because of gender but because you were both damn good dancers.'
A third commented with a pun. 'Just a couple of viKINGS,' they said along with two crown emoji.
Sheik shared why he wanted to join the squad in a video uploaded to the Vikings' YouTube page last month.
'I went to a lot of Vikings games with my family, mainly my dad. I was definitely watching cheerleaders thinking, like, 'I wish I could do that.''
He added he was 'being that role model for other little kids who don't know that this is an option.'
Conn said in the video, 'The people I'm meeting, dancers, cheerleaders and coaches, are really shaping the way that I'm thinking about this program. And I'm really starting to love it a lot.'
'The Carolina Panthers, since 2022, have featured the first and only openly-transgender cheerleader (Justine Lindsay) in the NFL,' NBC News reported. The Washington Commanders also currently have a co-ed dance squad.

Anthony Richardson's agent laments 'questionable' trust with Colts after decision to bench QB for Daniel Jones

Anthony Richardson got the bad news on Tuesday that he will not be the starting quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts. While speaking with reporters about the team's decision start Daniel Jones instead, Richardson took it in stride. His agent, Deiric Jackson, took a different tack. Jackson spoke with ESPN's Stephen Holder later Tuesday. He told Holder that that the decision constitutes a breakdown in trust with Colts management. "Trust is a big factor, and that is, at best, questionable right now," Jackson said. "Anthony came back and made the improvements in the areas he needed to improve. And by all accounts, he had a great camp." [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Jackson added that "we have a lot to discuss" in comments that didn't include a trade request but didn't inspire confidence in Richardson's future with the franchise. Richardson's response to benching Richardson, meanwhile, had this to say about the decision while speaking with reporters earlier Tuesday in the Colts locker room: "You've got to respect the decision," Richardson said. "They feel like he's a better fit for the team, better fit for the outcome of us winning. So you've just got to respect it and just keep working. "That doesn't undermine any other work I've been putting in, doesn't say that I haven't improved. I'm proud of the improvement I've made." That's a striking contrast in tone from Richardson and his agent as Richardson enters the season as a backup two-plus years after the Colts selected him with the No. 4 pick in the 2023 draft. What does Daniel Jones have to offer? Head coach Shane Steichen announced the decision to reporters early Tuesday. He made clear that the decision to start Jones is not just a Week 1 arrangement. "He's the starting quarterback for the season,' Steichen said. "I don't want to have a short leash on that." There's little to indicate that Jones offers the Colts a shot at any long-term or short-term success of significance. The Giants bailed on Jones in 2024 after five-plus turnover-plagued seasons as their starting quarterback that produced just one winning campaign (9-7-1, 2022). After a 2-8 start to the 2024 season in which Jones posted more turnovers (9) than touchdowns thrown (8), the Giants benched the former first-round pick. They ultimately released him before the season was over. Jones is a known commodity. Despite that, the Colts brought him in as competition for Richardson, whose struggles with injury (19 missed games), accuracy (50.6% completion rate) and leadership have undercut his tremendous upside as one of the most gifted athletes in the NFL. Richardson had plenty to work on this offseason to prove himself, and he and Jackson contend that he showed substantial signs of progress. But Jackson insinuated that a competition in which Jones got the first practice reps over the incumbent Richardson was determined before it started. Regardless of the motivation for the decision, the decision's been made. And it's put Richardson's future with the franchise that drafted him in peril.

Steelers quarterback Will Howard nearing a return?

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Will Howard suffered a fractured small bone in his right hand on August 5. The injury has limited his participation in training camp and kept him out of team drills for the preseason, joint practice, and into the home stretch before the final roster cutdowns. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network originally reported that Howard would miss at least three weeks, but could he play Thursday night in Carolina? Two weeks after suffering the injury, Steelers reporter Mark Kaboly of The Pat McAfee Show spotted Howard with a brace on his right hand. In the video, Howard caught a football with his left hand, never placed it in his right, and tossed it to a coach during drills. The sixth-round pick out of Ohio State missed Pittsburgh's first two preseason games, and it would be stunning to see him take the field in Carolina with no reps leading into his first NFL game. 'It does suck,' Howard told the media on August 12. 'As much as I'm trying to be a good teammate to pump my brothers up, I'm trying as hard as I can to not be bugged by this a ton. The competitor in me would tear my left arm off if I could go back in there.' With Howard sidelined and Mike Tomlin confirming that Aaron Rodgers won't play, Mason Rudolph is in line to make his third start of the preseason against the Panthers. The Steelers could opt to put Howard on IR if he isn't ready to go come the season opener on September 7. Skylar Thompson completed 20/28 passes for 233 yards and three touchdowns against Jacksonville two weeks ago, but followed it up with a more pedestrian performance facing Tampa Bay. Thompson threw for 115 yards, no scores, and one interception as all three Steelers QBs threw a pick. Howard led the Big Ten in completion percentage (73%) and touchdowns (35) as a senior at Ohio State and guided the program to a national championship victory in Atlanta over Notre Dame.

Salma Hayek pays tribute to late 'Fools Rush In' costar Matthew Perry on his birthday: 'Thinking of you today'

The "Frida" actress shared memories from her onscreen romance with the "Friends" star on what would have been his 56th birthday. Salma Hayek is remembering her late rom-com costar, Matthew Perry. The Frida actress shared a tribute to her Fools Rush In castmate in an Instagram post on Tuesday, which would have been the Friends star's 56th birthday. "Thinking of you today Matthew," Hayek wrote in her caption, alongside the Spanish translation, "Pensando en ti hoy, Matthew." The post featured a still of Perry and Hayek (who was clutching a small dog) from the 1997 film, as well as a short clip from the movie in which Isabel (Hayek) brings her new boyfriend Alex (Perry) to a large family gathering. "This is a family dinner?" Alex asks upon seeing the size of the party. "I guess a lot of people couldn't make it," Isabel responds. Hayek previously memorialized her late costar, who died in October 2023 from the acute effects of ketamine, shortly after his passing. "Two days ago, I woke up to the shocking news that Matthew Perry is no longer with us. It's taken me a couple of days to process this profound sadness," Hayek wrote on Instagram at the time. "There is a special bond that happens when you share dreams with someone, and together you work towards them." Fools Rush In tells the story of a New York architect and a Nevada photographer who share a whirlwind romance after a one-night stand leads to an unplanned pregnancy. In his 2022 memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, Perry remembered Hayek frequently sharing a "very elaborate and lengthy idea" about how they should approach their scenes together, but noted that "her long-winded ideas weren't always helpful" in the end. "There's one scene in which I'm professing my love for her," Perry recalled in his memoir. "She suggested that we don't look at each other — rather, we should look out at our future together. After listening to this nonsense for about twenty minutes, I finally said: 'Listen, Salma,' I said, 'I'm telling you I love you in this scene. You look wherever you want, but I'm going to be looking at you.'"However, Perry remained fond of the project decades after its release, describing it as "probably my best movie" in his book. The actor said that he was particularly touched by advice he received from the film's director, Andy Tennant. "I was bouncing around doing my funny little things, and [Tennant] would take me aside and say, 'You don't have to do that. You're interesting enough to watch without doing that,'" Perry remembered in his book. "That line of thinking allowed him to pull out of me one of the best performances of my career. Could this be a different way of saying Matty, you're enough, the words I've been longing to hear my entire life?" Read the original article on Entertainment Weekly
