
Author interview: Finding new life among the hidden worlds at the ‘Ends of the Earth'
On his field trip, the British glaciologist noticed a strange phenomenon: There were layers of sediments typical of those found at the bottom of lakes.
It led Mercer to come up with a new working hypothesis: Approximately 120,000 years ago, the high-altitude site where he was carrying out his research held lakes instead of glaciers.
Mercer's logic implied that during warm periods, the West Antarctic ice sheet melts completely, only to re-form during cold periods.
Mercer explored this idea further in a scientific paper he published in 1968, but nobody paid attention. A decade later, Mercer published another paper in the science journal Nature.
'If the global consumption of fossil fuels continues to grow… atmospheric CO2 content will double in about 50 years,' he wrote.
'Climatic models suggest that the resultant greenhouse-warming effect will be greatly magnified in high latitudes… and could start rapid deglaciation of West Antarctica, leading to a 5m rise in sea level.'
The scientific community denounced Mercer as an attention-seeking alarmist.
From 1978, until his death nine years later, the British scientist struggled to get grants to support his research.
Mercer was a visionary, but his ambitious ideas did not fit with a commonly held consensus among climate scientists.
Up until the beginning of the millennium, most of them believed that Antarctica — the Earth's fifth largest but least populated continent — was a stable bulwark against changes in ice.
Today, American palaeontologist and evolutionary biologist Neil Shubin describes Mercer as 'an amazing field geologist'.
'Mercer said the world is at a tipping point, and if we keep increasing global temperatures, we are setting ourselves up for dramatic changes with the ice in West Antarctica, and by extension, global sea levels,' the 64-year-old scientist explains from his office at the University of Chicago — where he is currently a professor of Organismal Biology and Anatomy.
'Mercer's peers thought Antarctica was very stable. Unfortunately, though, as research continued over time, it turns out Mercer was probably right.
'Three decades ago in Antarctica, we were losing, say, 80 gigatons of ice per year. But now we are losing about 280 gigatons per year.'
Moving ice shapes the world
Shubin's book examines how moving ice shapes the world. He notes, for instance, that polar regions encompass 8% of the total surface of the Earth and that almost 70% of all the planet's fresh water is frozen in ice.
Expeditions to the polar regions are now a matter of urgency.
'The Arctic is heating five to seven times faster than the rest of the globe, and there are now open spaces of water where ice was previously,' he says.
'In Antarctica, melting ice is less visible to the naked eye.'
In fact, Antarctica is witnessing the slowest temperature rise on Earth, but for complex reasons. As the oceans warm, Antarctica's surface temperatures stay relatively cool.
This disparity in temperature amplifies a wind current, which swirls around Antarctica and carries 170 times more water than all of the Earth's rivers combined.
With that water comes heat. The change in the circumpolar current brings more warm seawater to the coast of Antarctica, causing the coastal glaciers to melt from below, where the ice meets the ocean.
The glaciers then fragment and collapse into the sea.
Shrinking glaciers, of course, mean rising seas.
The British Antarctic Survey along with the US Antarctic Program, have collaborated on research to help us understand those glaciers in West Antarctica.
'Specifically, with robots looking underneath the ice, and with satellite images, and with studies of the ice, both in the air and in the water. They confirm that in West Antarctica there is a lot to worry about,' says Shubin.
Drilling in ice in Antarctica has also shed light on another idea geographers and scientists have been speculating about since the mid-19th century: Underneath the ice of the region sit entire worlds sealed off from Earth's surface.
We now have a detailed understanding of these hidden worlds, via decades of research that has been carried out by scientists from numerous countries at Lake Vostok.
The largest subglacial lake in Antarctica has a surface area of more than 14,000sq km and a depth of more than 800m.
Glaciologists have reasons to believe that Lake Vostok may have been separated from the world above for over 15m years, Shubin explains.
During the late 1990s, a group of Russian, French, and American scientists set off on an international science trip to drill a core to get down to Lake Vostok.
On that occasion, though, the team stopped drilling about 400ft above where they expected liquid water.
But even at that depth, the ice samples they recovered displayed special properties.
John Priscu, from Montana State University, later received one of those samples.
Putting them under high-powered microscopes, Priscu surmised that there were about 100,000 microbes per millilitre of ice.
Those findings inspired Priscu to hunt for more life elsewhere in Antarctica.
For logistical reasons Priscu decided to move his research to Lake Whillans: A subglacial lake in Antarctica that sits 480km from the South Pole.
Using a drill sterilised by UV light and hydrogen peroxide, Priscu and his team sampled the waters of Lake Whillans, which were then examined back in the lab.
DNA sequencing revealed nearly 4,000 species living in Lake Whillans under the ice.
The subglacial microbes were diverse, thriving, and part of a complex web of ecological interactions.
'These are living creatures that have been separated from the sun, for millennia, if not millions of years,' Shubin explains.
And these creatures exchange information with other lakes underneath.
'We don't know much about these worlds and how these creatures survive. There is probably a wide diversity of microbial lifeforms that we can barely imagine under there.'
If life can thrive and survive under the ice in Antarctica, it might also be possible it can thrive in extraterrestrial environments too.
Shubin mentions Europa, the fourth largest of Jupiter's 95 moons, and, Saturn's moon, Enceladus: A small icy world that has geyser-like jets spewing water vapour and ice particles into space.
'Both of these places have ice on the exterior and fresh water underneath the ice, which make them two promising candidates for places in our solar system to expect microbial life,' Shubin explains.
'Understanding life under the ice in Antarctica gives us a model to think possible alien life outside our own planets.'
Closer to home, however, there are more urgent matters to be concerned about, Shubin warns.
Global warming means our planet is undoubtedly entering an era of uncertainty.
Shubin cites one scientific study which estimates that sea levels could rise as much as 10ft globally in the next century, if the planet warms more than three degrees Fahrenheit.
'Geological engineering is one option we might have to peruse if we cannot, as [a global community] get carbon emissions under control,' says Shubin.
'But the reality is that the choices we make for the future will make a difference. Not just for us. But for future generations.
'We need to keep global conversations alive and international science collaboration going,' Shubin concludes.
'Antarctica and the Arctic are warming, and polar treaties are straining as fast as ice melts and species disappear.
'Our fragile window for understanding the cosmos, the planet, and ourselves is closing, so we need to act now.'

A big transformation from The Bear and Stranger Things to Fantastic Four
They starred in two of the biggest and most-talked about TV hits of recent years when they were cast in The Bear and Stranger Things. Now the success of those shows has helped propel actors Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn to move into the superhero genre. Moss-Bachrach plays Ben Grimm, aka The Thing in The Fantastic Four: First Steps while his British co-star Quinn gets to have a blast as The Human Torch. It meant making a move from drama to a comic-book blockbuster - and for Quinn, the opportunity to work with Matt Shakman, the director who made Wandavision's retro spirit a hit with audiences. 'I'd seen Wandavision, and was very taken by the world that Matt set up in that,' says the actor. 'It was so singular and very distinct and very unlike anything else. So the thought of him applying that kind of direction to a feature-length film and the characters that would occupy that film, I was very curious to see what he'd do with it.' Shakman is again aiming to blend the retro with the futuristic in what is likely to be one of summer's biggest blockbusters. Featuring a cast that also includes Vanessa Kirby, Pedro Pascal and Julia Garner, First Steps focuses on Marvel's First Family as they attempt to blend their roles as heroes with their own personal connections. The film is set during the 1960s, against the backdrop of the space race, when the four astronauts' lives are changed following an exposure that gives them superhuman powers. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, The Fantastic Four debuted in 1961. Pedro Pascal and Joseph Quinn in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. 'We watched a lot of footage of the Apollo missions,' says Moss-Bachrach. 'We watched a lot of documentary footage from the 60s to place it, to contextualise it. We've come so far from that spirit of optimism and the great space race. It was helpful to get a window into these missions that would embody the hopes and dreams and capture an entire nation. We're such a divided place these days, so I think those were helpful.' The US actor is best known for playing restaurant manager Richie Jerimovich in global TV hit The Bear. His superhero sidekick Quinn comes to the world of Marvel following his role as Eddie in Stranger Things. Stepping into a Marvel movie marked a different project entirely. 'The scale of production is absolutely massive,' says Moss-Bachrach. 'I've never been on a production, a set like this. I felt like I was in old Hollywood - back lots, sets for hundreds of metres. Really big, deeply thorough, very detailed. It was an incredibly immersive macro and micro experience.' Because he plays The Thing - best known for his trademark rocky appearance and superhuman powers - Moss-Bachrach worked closely with filmmakers in the motion-capture process. The process uses technology to capture the actor's performance and movement within the character, with the help of digital visual effects. 'It was surprisingly easy,' he says of the experience. 'I thought it was going to be very hard, very different and distinct from normal scene work. But actually, in the end, it was very close to how I'd normally do a scene, except for the fact that I was trusting all these incredibly talented animators to fill me out, make me a bit bigger. But I wasn't playing a monster - I was playing a man.' Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Pedro Pascal in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Both actors come to the film playing characters that fans have long felt a sense of ownership of. Do they feel the pressure of expectation? 'I think it's important to try and not pay attention to that,' says Quinn. 'I think if you're trying to do something where you're aiming for some invisible target that you think people might like, you're doing yourself a disservice. You've got to follow the material, listen to what's happening in front of you, trust your instinct, and go off what the other actors are doing. 'You'll do things in this business where you make something which maybe no one will watch, and sometimes you'll make something which a lot of people want to watch. Integrity feels like a lofty word, but just doing your job is a good mantra.' Should the new movie featuring these four unlikely superheroes strike a chord with audiences, its stars could well find themselves returning to their roles for further outings within the busy Marvel Universe. 'I guess you're mindful of the fact that, yeah, there is a potential for some longevity with these characters,' says Quinn. 'But thankfully, I really like the character that I'm playing, and so that's kind of out of our hands, whether we'll be playing them for that long. But certainly if I'm able to spend another seven months with this gang, that wouldn't be a bad thing.' UCC scientists part of international team that discovered 250-million-year-old 'wonder reptile'
Irish palaeontologists have helped discover an ancient "wonder reptile" which completely disrupts the scientific view of how skin and feathers evolved in reptiles. The international research team, which included experts from University College Cork (UCC), discovered the new species of fossil reptile in France, and dated to the Triassic period some 250 million years ago, with a bizarre plume on its back that is similar to feathers. But this creature existed some 70 million years before the oldest fossil feathers. The discovery has completely disrupted our view of the evolution of skin and feathers in reptiles, the team said, as they published their findings in the journal Nature, on Tuesday. The study was led by scientists Dr Stephan Spiekman and Prof Rainer Schoch from the State Museum of Natural History in Stuttgart, Germany, along with an international team from Germany, Italy, France and the USA. The team included UCC palaeontologists Prof Maria McNamara, Dr Valentina Rossi, and Dr Tiffany Slater. Their discovery centres on the 247-million-year-old Mirasaura grauvogeli, from the Grès à Voltzia area in northeastern France. Picture: UCC Scans of its fossil show the reptile had a delicate, bird-like skull with a largely toothless snout, large forward-facing eyes and a high, domed skull. These features, plus its grasping forelimbs, point to a tree-dwelling lifestyle and diet of insects and other small prey. But it also had a bizarre showy plume of long outer layer structures on its back that are similar to feathers. The UCC team analysed the fossil's outer layer structures using scanning electron microscopy and synchrotron X-ray analyses, focusing on their preserved melanosomes — cell organelles that contain melanin pigments that are common in skin, hair, feathers and internal organs of fossil and modern vertebrate animals. They discovered the melanosomes in this reptile are similar in shape to those in feathers, but not mammal hair or reptilian skin. 'We know that in modern animals, melanosome shape is closely linked to tissue type,' Dr Rossi said. 'We can therefore be confident that the Mirasaura structures share some common developmental features with feathers.' Unlike feathers in modern birds, however, the Mirasaura structures lack branching, showing instead a simple long feature that superficially resembles the shaft of modern bird feathers. Prof McNamara, leader of the UCC team and coauthor of the study, said: 'We were looking in the right time window, but we were shocked to find long integumentary structures in a completely different group of ancient reptiles.' Co-author Dr Slater said this creature forces scientists back to the drawing board for when feather-like structures first evolved. Astronomer launches probe into CEO Andy Byron after Coldplay kiss cam scandal
Astronomer has launched a formal investigation into CEO Andy Byron following the explosive fallout from the Coldplay kiss cam debacle. The company's married chief executive and a blonde woman, believed to be Kristin Cabot, Astronomer's chief people officer, were caught in a clinch when they popped up on the giant screen during the British band's gig.
