Aug 20 (Reuters) - Alphabet's (GOOGL.O), opens new tab Google introduced on Wednesday a new lineup of Pixel smartphones and gadgets, intensifying its efforts to embed artificial intelligence across a wide ecosystem of products. The products were launched at the annual "Made by Google" event held in New York that diverged from its typical format to emphasize mainstream consumer appeal over technical details. Talk show host Jimmy Fallon, the Jonas Brothers and other celebrities featured heavily across the presentation, as they helped demonstrate real-world applications of Google's AI integrations into the hardware. As for the hardware itself, the upgrades were comparatively modest. "There has been a lot of hype about (AI in phones) and frankly a lot of broken promises too, but Gemini is the real deal," said Rick Osterloh, Google's senior vice president of devices and services, referring to Google's AI chatbot and model. At its developer conference in June, iPhone maker Apple (AAPL.O), opens new tab toned down its AI promises a year after it failed to deliver AI upgrades to key products such as Siri. Apple is expected to unveil its new line of iPhones this autumn. While Google's hardware upgrades were modest compared with its bold refresh in 2024, the company maintained its forward progress on its stated ambition to develop a universal AI assistant. "We've got the best models, we've got the best AI assistant, and it means this can just unlock so much helpfulness on your phone," Osterloh said. New AI features rolling out with the Pixel 10 lineup include a "coach" in the camera app to help users take better pictures and an assistant that displays relevant information without a user's explicit request, such as showing a flight confirmation email when they call an airline. Employees also demoed integrations of AI features earlier unveiled at Google's developer conference in May, such as a real-time language translation function for phone calls. The exteriors of the phones remain largely the same, though Google added a telephoto lens on the base model to bring it in line with the cameras on its pricier units. Prices, starting at $799 for the base unit and $1,799 for the foldable model, remained flat despite concerns earlier this year that some smartphones could experience drastic price hikes due to U.S. tariffs. "A lot of the stuff they showed today would probably run almost exactly the same way on last year's hardware. Their point is it's not about just the hardware anymore," said Bob O'Donnell, chief analyst at Technalysis Research. Google's annual hardware event has traditionally served as a way for the company to show off to device makers and software developers the potential of Android, a key strategic component to battling competition from Apple, which has its own operating system for its iPhones. Though Google develops the Android operating system underlying more than 80% of smartphones worldwide, its Pixel line generates only a fraction of the sales of other firms selling Android-powered phones, such as Samsung ( opens new tab and Xiaomi ( opens new tab. Analysts told Reuters this year's event appeared to be an attempt by Google to broaden the appeal of Pixel beyond its traditional base. "Last year there was such a jump in the hardware, from a design and feature perspective," said Carolina Milanesi, an analyst at Creative Strategies. "This feels more like a big push from a marketing perspective." Google's AI push has not yet translated to a material improvement in market share: for the second quarter, Google held 1.1% of the worldwide smartphone market, up from 0.9% one year ago, according to IDC. In the United States, Pixel's biggest market in terms of shipments, the share slid to 4.3% from 4.5% in that same time period, according to IDC. Google has so far limited its focus to the high-end market. Nearly three-quarters of Pixel shipments occurred in the United States, Japan and UK, according to research firm IDC. On Wednesday, the company announced it would begin selling the Pixel devices in Mexico for the first time. Google's limited geographical presence with Pixel has inhibited its ability to amass market share, analysts told Reuters. "I hope this is the start of expanding their channel presence," Milanesi said. "The opportunity of the addressable market they can reach is still what is kind of holding Google back." The Pixel 10, as well as the souped-up Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL, will be available later this month, while the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is slated to ship in October. Among the four new devices is Google's most expensive smartphone ever, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. With prices starting at £1,749 and going up as high as £2,099, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold comes in as one of the costliest foldables on the market. But with an overhauled design featuring a gearless hinge, larger outer display, and massive battery, Google is hoping this top–of–the–line model will be worth the price. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold boasts a 6.4–inch outer screen and can fold out to reveal a massive 8–inch inner display. But the real selling point is that Google is calling this its 'most durable' design yet, with a hinge that can survive 10 years of folding. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is available for pre–order today and will be available from October 9. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold has been launched today alongside the Google Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL. Pixel 10 Pro Fold The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is launching with three storage options – 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB – costing £1,749, £1,869, and £2,099 respectively. That massive price tag puts the Pixel 10 Pro Fold on par with the newly released Samsung Galaxy Fold 7, which costs up to £2,149. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold features 'aerospace–grade' aluminium construction and is available in two colours: a grey colour called Moonstone and a green tone called Jade. Google has succeeded in making its latest foldable impressively thin, at just 10.8mm thick folded and 5.2mm unfolded. That is a good deal thinner than the 7.2mm unfolded thickness of the Motorola Razr 60. Compared to the previous Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, this latest offering is an upgrade in almost every way. Thanks to thinner bezels, the outer display has grown from 6.3 inches to 6.4 inches – making it the largest foldable outer display outside of the Chinese market. Both the inner and outer displays have also been upgraded to the latest Actua display, with a dazzling maximum brightness of 3,000 nits that should make them usable in the sunniest conditions. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold's battery will now be 5,015 mAh, up from 4,650 mAh on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Google says that this should give '30+ hour' battery life and the capacity to charge up to 50 per cent in just 30 minutes. Those new charging capabilities also include the magnetic 'Pixelsnap' system, which allows the Pixel 10 Pro Fold to stand up in a wireless charging stand, even when unfolded. The new generation of the Fold features an updated 'triple rear camera system' featuring a 48–megapixel main camera. That might not be as impressive as the 200–megapixel main camera on the Samsung Galaxy Fold 7, but it is on par with the 48–megapixel main camera on the iPhone 16 Pro. In addition, there is a 10.5–megapixel ultrawide camera and a 10.8–megapixel telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom and up to 20x digital zoom. Perhaps the most exciting selling point is Google's overhaul of the foldables' durability. Google says the folding mechanism now utilises a 'gearless hinge' which is twice as durable as the hinge on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. According to the company, it should comfortably survive up to 10 years' worth of folding. Critically, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is also the first foldable to have an 'IP68' resistance rating, meaning it is completely dust resistant and can be submerged in three feet (one metre) of water for 30 minutes. In theory, that should avoid the problem of dust or sand getting into the hinge, which can be catastrophic for some other foldables. On the inside, Google has boosted the Pixel Pro Fold's capabilities so that it can make the most of the company's latest AI features. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is powered by Google's new Tensor G5 processor and boasts an impressive 16GB of RAM. This latest foldable will get all the same Google AI features as the other Pixel 10 phones in the lineup. That includes Gemini Live, Magic Cue and Daily Hub, as well as picture editing tools like Add Me, Best Take, and Camera Coach. What else has been released today? The other big announcement from Google today is the reveal of the new Pixel 10 lineup. The Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL come in as Google's latest line of flagship smartphones, and are significantly cheaper than their folding counterpart. The new devices start at £799, £999, and £1,299 respectively and are available with a number of storage options at varying price points. The most expensive model, the Pixel 10 Pro XL with 1TB of storage, comes in at £1,549 – making it identically priced to the comparable Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra. All three phones will be Google's first to ship with the new Material 3 Expressive UI, and will use the Tensor G5 processor. The Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro both feature a 6.3–inch display, while the Pro XL features a substantial 6.8–inch display. The Pixel 10 is available in four colours: Obsidian, Frost, Indigo and Lemongrass. The camera has been upgraded to include a 48–megapixel main camera, a 13–megapixel ultrawide, and a 10.8–megapixel telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom. The Pixel 10 Pro includes improvements over the Pixel 10 in almost every area, featuring a bigger battery, more RAM, upgraded speakers, and faster charging speeds. The Pixel 10 Pro and 10 Pro XL also feature an impressive 48–megapixel telephoto camera, capable of up to 100x zoom with the 'Pro Res Zoom' feature. The Pixel 10 Pro is available in the colours Obsidian, Porcelain, Moonstone, and Jade. All three new phones will be available from the Google Store and retail partners from August 28. Alongside the new phones and foldable phones, Google is also releasing the Pixel Watch 4 and two new sets of headphones. The Pixel Watch 4 costs between £349 and £499 and is the first smartwatch to use a domed Actua 360 display and support standalone satellite communication. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold becomes one of the first folding phones to feature the full IP68 water and dust resistance common among standard slab phones, as Google attempts to allay durability concerns of the flexible screen. It features a similar camera system to the Pixel 10. The phones also support various AI photography features including the new Camera Coach that uses Google's AI servers to analyse the scene in front of the camera to suggest different framing, angles and lighting to take a better photo. The Pixel 10 starts at £799 (€899/$799/A$1,349) and the Pixel 10 Pro starts at £999 (€1,099/$999/A$1,699) and ships on 28 August. Google also unveiled the Pixel Watch 4 smartwatch, which brings Gemini to the wrist and can act as personal AI heath coach. Part of the new Fitbit app, Gemini can create personalised fitness and sleep plans, measure the impact of training in real time and answer health and fitness questions chatbot-style. The Pixel Watch 4 is available in two sizes and has a domed screen that is 10% larger than its predecessors. It is the first smartwatch to offer SOS satellite-based emergency services when off the grid, starting with the US. The device is also the first Google smartwatch to be designed for serviceability including battery and screen repairs, finally catching up to Apple and Samsung. It costs from £349 (€499/$349/A$579). Meanwhile, the Pixel Buds 2a are a cheaper version of Google's compact Bluetooth earbuds and cost £129 (€149/$129/A$239). They have a same Tensor A1 chip as the company's top Buds Pro 2 earbuds, and have noise cancelling and integrated Gemini AI assistant. The Buds 2a charging case is also designed with a replaceable battery, although the earbuds themselves are not repairable.
