Sleeper Hit Movie Shatters Multiple Records With Surprise Streaming Success
KPop Demon Hunters, a musical animated film that premiered on Netflix on June 20 without much promotion beforehand, has quickly shot to extreme success, breaking multiple records.
The movie stars Arden Cho as Rumi, May Hong as Mira, and Ji-young Yoo as Zoey, three young women who are members of a K-pop group called HUNTR/X and work as demon hunters trying to make the world safe. Things get complicated when a demon boy band called Saja Boys arrives on the scene.

Shortly after KPop Demon Hunters hit the streaming network, it became very popular, rising to take the top spot on Netflix's global movie chart for the week after its release. It is currently still the top movie in the U.S. and South Korea.
As the movie continues to achieve streaming success, the soundtrack, which features hit songs like "Golden" and "Your Idol," is smashing records on music charts as well. KPop Demon Hunters currently holds the third spot on the Billboard 200 album chart, becoming the highest-charting soundtrack of 2025, beating Wicked. It is also the highest-charting animated movie soundtrack since Encanto topped the charts in early 2022.
In addition, KPop Demon Hunters had the most streaming in a week for a soundtrack in the U.S. since the popular Barbie soundtrack in 2023, with over 77 million streams in the tracking week ending on July 3, according to Billboard. Multiple tracks are charting on the Billboard and Spotify song charts, with "Golden" taking the fourth spot on the latter's Weekly Top Songs Global chart for the week ending in July 3.
The hit animated film continues to receive huge praise from audiences and critics alike, earning Oscar buzz. Indie video game marketplace announced this week that it has 'deindexed' adult and not-safe-for-work games, removing them from its browse and search pages. The move, the company said, was in response to a campaign by Collective Shout (an advocacy group that has previously criticized video games, rap music, and lingerie commercials) targeting both and Steam for selling 'No Mercy,' a game that depicts rape and incest. It also said that 'No Mercy' had been 'temporarily available on before being banned back in April,' and that 'the situation developed rapidly,' forcing the company to 'act urgently to protect the platform's core payment infrastructure,' without providing advanced notice to creators. After the audit, said NSFW game creators will be required to confirm that their content is allowed under the policies of their payment processors linked to their account. On social media, users criticizing decision noted that its current terms declare that adult content violations are 'permanent with no chance of appeal' and that any funds in an offending account 'will not be eligible for payout' — or as one developer put it, 'If you violate the rules, we take all your money. Not just the money from that work, ALL your money from EVERYTHING you've ever made.' ‘Top Boy' Actor Michael Ward Accused Of Rape And Sexual Assault In UK
Source: SAMEER AL-DOUMY / Getty Michael Ward, the British actor known for his role in Netflix 's popular series Top Boy has been charged with rape and sexual assault connected to alleged events that took place in 2023. The 27-year-old Jamaican-born performer is slated to appear before the Thames Magistrates' Court on Thursday, Aug. 28 to answer to the charges, People reports. He is currently facing two counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault levied by an accuser who remains unnamed by UK police. 'Our specialist officers continue to support the woman who has come forward – we know investigations of this nature can have significant impact on those who make reports,' said Detective Superintendent Scott Ware, whose team is leading the investigation for Metropolitan Police. Ward has not been arrested in connection to the crime and will appear before the court under his own free will. The young actor has been making a name for himself over the last few years appearing in projects like The Book of Clarence, The Beautiful Game and The Old Guard. He also received rave reviews for his work in The A List prior to his breakout role as Jamie on the Drake-produced Top Boy . 'I deny the charges against me entirely. I have cooperated fully with the police throughout their investigation and will continue to cooperate,' Ward said in a statement amid the charges. 'I recognise that proceedings are now ongoing, and I have full faith that they will lead to my name being cleared. Given those proceedings, I am unable to comment further.' Though the allegations against Ward are serious, the deputy chief crown prosecutor for CPS London South, Catherine Baccas, has asked that the public allow the actor his right to a fair trial before rushing to judgment. 'Having carefully reviewed a file of evidence, the Crown Prosecution Service has authorised the Metropolitan police to charge Micheal Ward, 27, with two counts of rape, two counts of assault by penetration, and one count of sexual assault against a woman in January 2023,' said Baccas in a statement. 'We remind all concerned that proceedings against the suspect are active and he has a right to a fair trial. It is vital that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.'
