Residents Torquay harbourside, Devon, were gutted that their beautiful town was being trashed, with litter and drugs paraphernalia left around.
Fuming homeowners, dog walkers and families are scared to walk down some streets, meanwhile, visitors are leaving the once bustling hotspot disappointed.
One scathing local said the situation was "very bad" and claimed the council aren't stepping up to resolve it, as reported by DevonLive.
"We have contacted the council, the police and Swisco (street cleaning and maintenance company), but haven't heard back from any of them," they said.
Pointing at a pile of litter, they added: "It annoys me when you read all these pieces about Torquay being such a lovely place, yet, just two minutes from where the tourists walk up and down, you have this horrendous thing.'
Horrified residents have also said they have seen the area increasingly plagued by drug use - exacerbated by a lack of police presence.
However, Torbay Council has announced that the area is set to be the site of a huge £70million regeneration scheme, aimed to tackle the "horrendous" harbourside.
It has shared a plan that councillors believe will "revolutionise" the popular town.
The Strand area, a former Debenhams store, will be the site of a " high-quality landmark" hotel with a staircase connecting the harbourside with The Terrace.
With views of the harbour, the soon-to-be hotel will boast 154 rooms and a luxurious space on the ground floor.

It's predicted that the development will provide about 80 full-time jobs, £32m in paychecks, and entice 86,000 new visitors to Torquay in the first 30 years.
The Strand was bought up in 2020 with planning granted in 2023 when Wilmott Dixon and Milligan appointed as Torbay's regeneration partners
Stuart Harris, CEO for Milligan, said: "This is more than just a regeneration project - it's about delivering something truly special for the town, blending high-quality design with exceptional experiences.
"One of the key design features is a striking new staircase, which will enhance the public realm and provide a seamless connection between the harbourside and The Terrace improving connectivity to the Hilton, Premier Inn, and car park."
The designs are still in the works with Torbay council claiming they want to include "historical elements" in the final design.
Residents are able to give their say in summer when the final plans are released with results in early 2026.
Torbay council assured locals that no buildings will be demolished until they get the go-ahead from residents.

Greg Monks' sister urges friends to 'stick together' in party resorts after body found in Portugal
"Before everyone left the hotel that night Greg made sure they all had a business card and a map from the hotel to help them find their way home. That is the kind of person he was." The sister of a Scots tourist who was found dead in Portugal after vanishing during a stag do has urged groups to "stick together" in party resorts. Greg Monks disappeared hours into the first night of a five-day stag trip to Albufeira. The 38-year-old became separated from pals when trying to head back to his hotel after a night on the famous club strip in the Algarve city. Greg, from Cambuslang near Glasgow, was last spotted on CCTV in a quiet residential area of Cerro de Aguia in the early hours of Wednesday, May 28 after arriving on the Tuesday evening. Tragically, after a week long search, Greg's body was found at the bottom of a ravine in the Cerro de Aguia neighbourhood on Wednesday, June 4. Now almost a week on from the devastating discovery, Greg's sister Jillian hopes her brothers story can serve as a warning to other Scots heading to party destinations, like Albufeira. Jillian told the Record: "I think it just shows in places like Albufeira everyone needs to stick together and look after each other. "His pals are absolutely devastated at what happened." Jillian revealed how her kind-hearted brother Greg made efforts to make sure his pals remembered where the hotel was and how to find it, before he tragically disappeared. She added: "Before everyone left the hotel that night Greg made sure they all had a business card and a map from the hotel to help them find their way home. "That is the kind of person he was. He was just looking after everyone else. He was so considerate." Police were able to locate Greg's body after CCTV from a local resident showed him attempting to scale a fence before he sadly fell to his death. He was found with all his belongings on him, including his wallet and phone something that makes his family certain that Greg came to no harm. Jillian said: "We don't believe that anything untoward happened. Everything the police have told us adds up. "We'll never truly know the full story. But we believe he just got lost and ended up at the wrong place at the wrong time. "It brings us some comfort knowing that Greg all had his belongings on him. He wasn't robbed, he still had his phone and his wallet, he had all his cards and cash." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! The Record yesterday told how Greg's loved ones are hoping to bring him home 'this week' as they plan his repatriation back to the UK. They are then planning a huge send off for him. Greg's mum Lynne, cousin and girlfriend Nicole flew back from Portugal last night without him, with authorities in Portugal working to arrange Greg's return home. Jillian said: 'We're hoping to bring Greg home by the weekend. 'His mum, girlfriend and cousin are going to fly home tonight. They wanted to fly back with him but it has just not been possible. 'It has been the toughest time of our lives. We still can't believe what has happened. 'But we're glad we now have some sense of closure. I don't know if any of us could have coped with even another day searching for my brother. 'We couldn't eat, we couldn't sleep. It was absolute torture. 'To know Greg has been found is a slight relief. We can now bring him home and give him the send off he deserves.'

Scots thug with dreadlocks brutally attacked victim with baseball bat after Bob Marley jibe
Crazed Gray was heard saying 'I'm gonna cave his skull in' HORROR ASSAULT Scots thug with dreadlocks brutally attacked victim with baseball bat after Bob Marley jibe Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A THUG with dreadlocks carried out a brutal baseball bat attack on a lad celebrating his 21st birthday - after the victim called him Bob Marley. Michael Gray took offence to being named the reggae legend and went looking for revenge several hours later. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up Crazed Gray jumped out of a car as Josh Shaw walked home from a bar with his partner and viciously attacked him with the weapon, knocking him unconscious. Gray, 40, of Glenrothes, Fife, was jailed for two years today when he appeared for sentencing at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court. Depute fiscal Sarah Smith previously told the court that the victim was out with friends for his 21st birthday and was in the same pub in the town as Gray. The victim was heard asking if he had put an Oasis song on the jukebox and as the thug was leaving the premises the victim said: 'See you later Bob Marley." Gray thought it was a reference to his dreadlocks and was heard saying: 'I'm gonna cave his skull in." The two groups were later in another boozer and Gray angrily warned the victim 'he was not the type of person to have a laugh with and he did not know who he was messing with". At around 1.20am Mr Shaw and his partner left the bar and began walking home when a car pulled up next to them with Gray in the front passenger seat. Gray got out of the car holding a black metal bat, which he used to strike the victim repeatedly on the head and body. He was knocked unconscious falling to the ground with passers-by calling an ambulance. But a police car arrived on the scene shortly afterwards and took him to the hospital. Divers uncover shipwreck of Glasgow vessel almost 140 years after it vanished without trace The victim's partner managed to video part of the incident, which included Gray making death threats and a black Vauxhall Zafira then driving off. Mr Shaw required surgery a few days later on his broken jaw. He had a metal plate and screws inserted to hold it together. Mr Shaw has lost feeling in the part of his chin which was struck and has been told this will never return. He also required stitches to a cut lip. Sheriff James Williamson previously told Gray: 'This was an outrageous, unprovoked and pre-planned assault on a young man causing him significant injury.' Gray admitted repeatedly striking his victim on the head and body with a baseball bat to his severe injury and permanent impairment.

Suspected Scots drug deaths soar by a THIRD despite SNP's boasts of ‘game-changing' legal fix room
This was a 33 per cent increase in deaths, or 76 more than the previous quarter 'NATIONAL CRISIS' Suspected Scots drug deaths soar by a THIRD despite SNP's boasts of 'game-changing' legal fix room Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) SUSPECTED drug-related deaths in Scotland spiked by a third in the first months of this year. Worrying new Scottish Government stats show there were 308 fatalities between January and March, believed to be linked to narcotics. The Scottish Government has said suspected drug fatalities "continue to remain at a high level". Among the 308 deaths, 244 were males - 44 per cent more than during the previous quarter and four per cent more than during the same period last year. There were 64 female fatalities between January and March, two per cent more than was recorded between October and December last year. There were also nine suspected drug deaths among people aged under 25, 80 per cent more than during the previous quarter. Opposition politicians have branded the latest statistics "devastating" and accused the SNP of "clearly failing" to address drug deaths. And the increased deaths come nearly six months after The Thistle safe drug consumption facility opened its doors in Glasgow. We told just a few days ago how council chiefs were forced to call in a JCB to scoop up drug debris near the 'fix' room. Piles of used needles were piled on Tobago Street in the city's Calton, near the controversial facility heralded by local authority bosses. The majority of suspected drug deaths were among people aged between 35 and 54. Nursery staff sift sandpits for needles as activist finds 50 in a minute near drug fix room The Scottish Government said this is "broadly in line" with previous quarters. Geographically, Greater Glasgow had 61 suspected drug deaths, followed by Ayrshire with 36 and Lanarkshire with 33. Scottish Conservative shadow minister for drugs, Annie Wells MSP, said: 'These devastating figures should be a source of shame for deluded SNP ministers, whose strategy to tackle drug deaths is clearly failing. 'They are completely detached from the reality of this national crisis, which has spiralled to record levels on their watch. 'Nationalist politicians have been at pains to trumpet the opening of The Thistle in Glasgow as a game-changing solution, yet the number of Scots suspected to have tragically lost their lives to drugs has risen sharply since it opened. 'It is clear that facility is feeding addiction, rather than helping to treat addiction. The public will be appalled that Neil Gray thinks more consumption rooms should get the green light while this flagship one is failing people so badly. 'The SNP need to drop their failed approach and finally back the Right to Recovery Bill which guarantees treatment for all those who need it.' Health Secretary Neil Gray said: 'Every death is a tragedy and through our £250 million National Mission we are determined to continue our efforts to reduce harm and deaths. My condolences go to anyone who has lost a loved one. 'While these figures show a quarter-on-quarter rise in suspected drug deaths, they also note a year-on-year fall. We want every person experiencing harm to be able to access the support they need. 'We are taking a wide range of evidence-based measures including opening the UK's first Safer Drug Consumption Facility pilot, working towards drug-checking facilities and widening access to treatment, residential rehabilitation and life-saving naloxone.'
