‘Tharpana Mandapam' at Perur padithurai lying in disuse
Hundreds of people perform their ancestral rites at the ghat on Amavasai day every month. In the event of heavy rain, the ghat gets inundated and puts people into untold hardship. Hence, it was decided to construct a 'Tharpana Mandapam'. A private trust constructed the facility at an outlay of ₹15 crore on 5.5 acres.
The facility was handed over to the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR and CE) Department and was received by Minister P.K. Sekar Babu on May 18. However, the facility has not been put to use and people continue to perform the rites in the open or in the coconut farms nearby.
The people have urged the HR and CE department to put the facility to use at the earliest.

Sniffing out trouble: Raj's 1st forest dept sniffer dog squad ready for action in Ranthambore
1 2 Jaipur: Rajasthan Forest department's first specialised sniffer dog squad is set for deployment in Ranthambore Tiger Reserve (RTR), with eBelgian Malinois 'Lucy' and her two handlers completing seven months of intensive training at the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) basic training centre in Panchkula, Haryana. The training, sponsored by WWF India, equips Lucy to sniff out crime clues, detect wildlife contraband, and track offenders. The squad reached Ranthambore on Saturday. The canine unit comprises forest guard and dog handler Mukut Meena, and assistant dog handler Rohit Meena, who trained alongside Lucy in advanced wildlife crime detection techniques. "This breed, developed in Belgium's Maline region in the 1800s, is valued for its intelligence, agility, and alertness," a forest official said. The initiative follows recommendations from the National Tiger Conservation Authority's 2022 Management Effectiveness Evaluation of Tiger Reserves, which called for a dedicated sniffer dog squad in RTR. Lucy is trained to detect tiger and leopard skins and bones, track poachers, and identify individuals from scents collected at crime scenes. Once deployed, the squad will help forest staff detect poaching, illegal tree felling, and trafficking of endangered species, forest produce, and weapons. Her skills will be particularly useful in navigating Rajasthan's vast, porous forest landscapes, where traditional surveillance often faces limitations. "These dogs offer a mobile, real-time tool for both preventive patrolling and rapid response. They can track offenders through dense terrain, locate crime scenes, and support enforcement teams during raids," said an official.
