Musk says xAI to take legal action against Apple over App Store rankings
Elon Musk said on Monday his artificial intelligence start-up xAI would take legal action against
Apple , accusing the iPhone maker of breaching antitrust regulations in managing the App Store rankings.
'Apple is behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides
OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store, which is an unequivocal antitrust violation,' Musk said in a post on his social media platform X. 'xAI will take immediate legal action.'
Musk did not provide evidence to support his claim. Apple, OpenAI and xAI did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
OpenAI's ChatGPT currently holds the top spot in the App Store's 'Top Free Apps' section for iPhones in the US, while xAI's Grok ranks fifth and Google's Gemini chatbot sits at 57th.
ChatGPT also leads the rankings on the Google Play Store, according to Sensor Tower data.
Apple has a partnership with OpenAI that integrates ChatGPT into iPhones, iPads and Macs.

Alibaba's new AI agent to ‘revolutionise' how merchants source goods online
Alibaba Group Holding's international commerce arm on Thursday released an artificial intelligence agent to help merchants source products and supplies, a development that could change the way online business is conducted. The Accio Agent unveiled by Alibaba International Digital Commerce Group (AIDC) was designed to 'revolutionise international commerce' by automating 70 per cent of the traditional time-consuming work, including product ideation, prototyping, compliance checks and supplier sourcing, the company said in a statement. The AI agent marks a step forward in the process of 'agentic purchase', which is the use of AI agents to handle everything from product discovery to fulfilment. It could fundamentally change existing models of online search, advertising and e-commerce as tech giants such as roll out their own agents. Alibaba said the agent could reduce weeks of market research and product sourcing work to just a few minutes. This would cut costs and speed up tasks for merchants, some of whom are small and medium-sized businesses run by solo entrepreneurs, enabling them to streamline their operations. Accio Agent was trained on a huge quantity of data. Photo: Handout '[Accio Agent] is designed to help you do business,' Zhang Kuo, vice-president at AIDC, said, adding that it could handle multiple tasks simultaneously and operate like a team of professionals such as sourcing specialists, developers and engineers, and market researchers.

Where is DeepSeek's next AI model? Speculation rises after OpenAI unveils GPT-5
China's leading artificial intelligence start-up, DeepSeek , finds itself at the centre of speculation about the release of its next-generation R2 reasoning model, following OpenAI 's launch of its GPT-5 model last week. DeepSeek – which made waves in the industry with its V3 model in December and the R1 model in January – has not introduced major updates to its products in the past months, aside from two minor revisions. While the market had expected DeepSeek to introduce a new foundation model within months of R1's release, the Hangzhou-based start-up – founded by computer scientist Liang Wenfeng as a side project of his quantitative trading firm – has yet to announce a schedule for the launch of the R2 model. DeepSeek did not respond to a request for comment on Wednesday. Developing and training an advanced model is an expensive and complex task, requiring substantial computing resources and training data, as well as sophisticated algorithms. It took OpenAI two and a half years to release GPT-5 after launching GPT-4 in March 2023. Sam Altman, CEO of ChatGPT maker OpenAI. Photo: Reuters According to a report by The Financial Times on Thursday, DeepSeek has delayed the launch of its new model owing to challenges in training it with Huawei Technologies' Ascend AI chips. The start-up has faced 'persistent technical issues' during the process, said the report, which cited an unidentified source.

PC maker Lenovo reports record quarterly revenue despite the ‘challenges' of US tariffs
Lenovo Group said its first quarter revenue reached a record high despite ongoing challenges from US tariff policies, as the world's largest personal computer (PC) maker pushes for the use of AI in both its consumer and enterprise products. Revenue for the three months ended June rose 22 per cent year on year to US$18.8 billion – a record high for a first quarter – while profits advanced by the same percentage to US$389 million, the company said on Thursday. Lenovo recorded double-digit year-on-year revenue growth across all of its main businesses partly due to the 'resilience and flexibility' of its supply chain, which allowed it to 'overcome challenges brought by tariff volatility and the geopolitical landscape', chairman and CEO Yang Yuanqing said. Yang said in May that US President Donald Trump's move to raise tariffs on Chinese goods had initially caught the company off guard and weighed heavily on the previous quarter. But the company had more than 30 manufacturing facilities in 11 markets globally, senior vice-president and chief financial officer Winston Cheng said in a media briefing on Thursday. Lenovo laptops are displayed at a Best Buy store in San Rafael, California, June 7, 2024. Diversified manufacturing locations allowed it to deliver products locally and gave it 'a lot of advantage', although Lenovo was 'worried about uncertainties and quick changes', Yang had said in May.
