Weekend food plan: Banng comes to Mumbai plus the newest spots to try in August
Uppu, Mumbai A plate of pillowy idlis and a corner table at his favourite south Indian breakfast joint in Matunga — that's how founder Aaliya Ahuja shares the inspiration behind Uppu, a restaurant serving home-style vegetarian south Indian food in Mumbai. Known for their famed Oleander Farms and its Saltt Karjat restaurant, the new venture is a reflection of her father's fond Sunday morning ritual complete with dosas, idlis and filter coffee. The 36-seater is situated in a quiet lane in Bandra, and has a mix of usual favourites and new dishes. The mains feature some lesser-known curries and spiced vegetables including a rare hyperlocal berry from Tamil Nadu and classics such as ghee roast from Karnataka. The idlis are definitely hot, and the kaapi is sweet. Who doesn't love hot breakfast on a Sunday? Where: Shop no. 2, ONGC Quarters Ankleshwar Towers, near Lilavati Hospital, Reclamation, Bandra, Mumbai - 400050 Lento, Goa. Lento, Goa Lento is where chef Jyoti Singh, the showrunner of Second House at Saligao, plans to cook from scratch. The breads will be made in-house with the same precision as French patisseries. There are comforting bowls inspired by his travels and good old memories — from Indonesian rice congee and Naga chicken soup to McPav made with Goan poee and sweet bakes that take you back to your childhood — everything prepared without any shortcuts. The coffee is consciously treated and is sourced from the Salawara Estate in Karnataka. Where: Next to The Second House, Muddavaddi, Saligao, Goa - 403511 Green curry at Banng. Banng, MumbaiThe Mumbai outpost of Banng, the renowned Thai restaurant from Gurugram helmed by chef Garima Arora, is much like her homecoming. Arora was born in Mumbai, and is the force behind the modern Indian restaurant Gaa in Bangkok, which also received a second Michelin star in the 2024 guide. The new space is divided into two levels — a bar on the ground floor and a sophisticated dining area above it. When it comes to the food, Arora offers a fresh perspective to the cuisine, by bringing in her flair to Thai classics including a selection of Bangkok street food and the country's regional specialities. Start with a Tom Kha Paani Puri, followed by a delicious sea bass ceviche, and heirloom tomatoes doused in an addictive tamarind dressing, plus a range of punchy curries to mop off with sticky rice. Where: Banng, Pinnacle House, 604, 15th Rd, PD Hinduja Rd, Mumbai - 400050. Drift, Mumbai. Nagarjuna Says His Coolie Look Was Inspired By Heath Ledger's Joker: ‘Glad He Didn't Put...'
Nagarjuna reveals Coolie director Lokesh Kanagaraj took inspiration from Heath Ledger's Joker in The Dark Knight for his villain look. Lokesh Kanagaraj's much-anticipated Coolie has finally arrived in cinemas, and with it comes a revelation about one of the film's most striking visual elements—Nagarjuna's villainous look. In a candid conversation with co-star Shruti Haasan, the veteran actor revealed that director Lokesh, a self-confessed fan of DC movies, took direct inspiration from Heath Ledger's iconic Joker in The Dark Knight when conceptualising his costume. Talking about the colour scheme, Nagarjuna shared, 'I think Loki had Heath Ledger's Joker in his mind, and he wanted that madness. He probably saw the madness in the colour as well." He explained how the choice of purple and cream felt completely new to him. 'I never wore such colours before. Loki told the dress designers. They got two or three options. He saw and said, 'This is it. This is the one I want.' I also had a jacket. Purple jacket. It was really good. I never wore those colours." Describing the outfit, he laughed, 'It is a very strange dress. I mean, even for me, it's baggy pants." Shruti agreed, adding, 'It's kind of a mix of Heath Ledger and old Joker, as we know from the character." Nagarjuna then quipped, 'I'm glad he didn't put on that smile." For an actor known for playing protagonists with moral authority, taking on a darker role was a significant shift. Nagarjuna revealed that he took several narrations before agreeing to join Coolie. 'The story starts with Simon's character. For the first time, I've recorded the narration and made notes to decide on the character. I never did this earlier." The transformation seemed to impress even the film's superstar lead. Recalling a moment from the shoot, Nagarjuna said, 'After the shot was over, Rajini sir nodded and said 'hmmm' (with a sweet smile)." Now playing in theatres from August 14, Coolie stars Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, Sathyaraj, and Aamir Khan in a cameo. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the film blends high-octane action with stylish visuals, and Nagarjuna's Joker-inspired antagonist is shaping up to be one of its most talked-about highlights. Google Photos adds image-to-video transformation tools
Google announced that it is adding a new 'Create' tab to its Google Photos app that will allow users to easily turn their photos into GIFs, videos, animations and more, per a blog post. Users can access the new feature by opening their Google Photos app and tapping on the 'Create' option. From there, users can create animated GIFs of selected photos and videos, add a 3D effect to photos for a cinematic feel, arrange photos in collages, and create photo/videos montages with music. In addition to this, users can turn their photos into videos by animating them or turning stills into six-second-long video clips. Photos can also be remixed into different artistic styles, such as an Anime-inspired image. The introduction of Google's 'Create' tool comes several days after Elon Musk's social media platform X allowed some paying users to turn their photos into videos with the help of the Grok Imagine offering.
