India, EU agree to push for conclusion of free trade pact this year

Reuters28-02-2025

NEW DELHI, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the European Union have agreed to push for the conclusion of a free trade agreement this year, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Friday.
The EU is India's largest trading partner in goods, with bilateral trade reaching $137.5 billion in 2023-24 fiscal year, marking a growth of about 90% over the previous decade.
Talks for an India-EU free trade agreement, stalled for eight years, resumed in 2021, now cover investment protection and geographical indications.
Leyen is in India on a two-day visit from Thursday, accompanied by leaders of EU member nations, coinciding with escalating geopolitical tensions, with Brussels and New Delhi set to outline key areas for deeper cooperation under their strategic partnership.
Troubled times offer great opportunities for partnership between India and the EU, and Prime Minister Modi and she had agreed to push to conclude a free trade pact this year, Leyen told a business conference.
"We both stand to lose from a world of spheres of influence and isolationism, and we both stand to gain from a world of cooperation and working together," Leyen said ahead of her talks with Modi.
"But I believe this modern version of great power, competition is also an opportunity for Europe, and India to reimagine its partnership," she said.

Live updates as Reform UK leader Nigel Farage makes major speech in Port Talbot

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage will be in Port Talbot today to give a press conference, laying out his plans for the party in Wales with months to go until a crucial election for his party. The most recent poll for Wales suggests his party is in line to take its first seats in the Senedd at the election in May 2026. Its only representation in Wales at the moment is with councillors, but a YouGov/Barn Cymru poll which asked people their voting intention for the Welsh Parliament in May put Reform UK in second with 25% of the vote. They were only behind Plaid Cymru who were projected to get 30% of the vote and ahead of Labour's 18%. You can read that here. In an opinion piece for WalesOnline, the party leader has given his first glimpses of policies ahead of the election. Mr Farage has said the party would allow coal mining again in Wales and says its long term plan is to "reopen the Port Talbot steelworks". The steelworks, owned by Tata, have not closed but its remaining blast furnaces were closed in 2024, with work now ongoing to build an electric arc furnace which will recycle previously-used steel. Thousands of jobs are being lost as part of the change. The Indian-owned company said the blast furnaces were at the end of their operational lives and too expensive to replace. The Port Talbot steelworks were, the company said, losing £1m a day before the blast furnaces were turned off. Reform UK say it would "use Welsh Development Grants to support real industry. We'll redirect economic funding from consultants and NGOs to actual factory floors, machinery, and industrial jobs in places like Llanelli, Shotton, and Ebbw Vale". Nigel Farage has also said the party would also set up "regional technical colleges" for people to have a "path into proper trade". The party would also, it says, stop any building being used for asylum seeker accommodation, end funding to the Welsh Refugee Council and scrap the Welsh Government's "Nation of Sanctuary". It also vowed to set up an Elon Musk style department to cut costs. "A Reform UK Senedd will also save hundreds of millions each year by cutting bureaucracy, waste and bad management. The establishment of Welsh DOGE will help us uncover where there is woke and wasteful spending and we will make sure those funds are redirected to frontline services," Mr Farage pledges. Breakingviews - Rate cut signals India's discontent with growth

MUMBAI, June 9 (Reuters Breakingviews) - India's status as the fastest-growing major economy isn't impressing everyone. The country's central bank sprung a surprise on Friday, slashing the key policy rate by 50 basis points and the cash reserve ratio for lenders by twice as much. Under new Governor Sanjay Malhotra, the Reserve Bank of India is putting more emphasis on supporting GDP. That's fine so long as it can fulfil its inflation-targeting mandate when the need arises. India last month claimed its position as the world's fourth-largest, opens new tab economy, overtaking Japan. Yet the 6.5% clip at which it grew during the year to the end of March was its slowest pace in four years. That's well behind the average 7.8%, opens new tab headline number the World Bank estimates the South Asian country needs to achieve its aim of high-income status by 2047, the 100th anniversary of independence. That's the goal Malhotra seems focused on. Barely six months into his role, the former bureaucrat has reduced the central bank's policy rate by a whole percentage point to 5.5%. Further cuts face a higher bar, he said on Friday, justifying the front-loading by citing the need for certainty in an environment of global churn. By bringing rate cuts forward, Malhotra may avoid a potential monsoon-induced spike in inflation from getting in the way of monetary easing. It marks a departure from the styles of former governors: Urjit Patel, who stepped down in 2018, instituted inflation targeting as the bank's top policy goal and his successor Shaktikanta Das pushed an intense clampdown on unsecured lending. The size of the rate move will nudge banks led by the State Bank of India ( opens new tab to hasten transmission of the past cuts through loan rates. Lending more is one way to charge up tepid urban spending. Overall consumption accounts for 57% of GDP. Yet there are limits to the RBI's latest actions. Although the lower reserve ratio for banks will release liquidity worth 2.5 trillion rupees, opens new tab ($29 billion) by December 2025, an almost equivalent or higher sum will be sucked out of the banking system as the RBI unwinds its short bets on the U.S. dollar made to cushion a falling rupee, economists at HDFC Bank reckon. Ultimately the central bank left its GDP forecast of 6.5% for the year ending March 2026 untouched. Under Malhotra, India's monetary policy may eventually be more supportive to the government's desire for faster growth. Such an outcome would reduce friction between the two sides but the thesis will only be truly tested when retail inflation, currently near a six-year low of 3.16% in April, ticks up higher. Titan's CaratLane eyes growth, more stores as young Indians embrace low-carat jewellery

June 9 (Reuters) - Titan Company's ( opens new tab CaratLane aims to surpass last financial year's revenue growth, as younger Indians warm up to lower-carat jewellery and the brand plans to open more stores, its top boss told Reuters. Brands selling lower-carat jewellery, including CaratLane and Kalyan Jewellers' ( opens new tab Candere, are rapidly expanding as younger Indians increasingly buy such pieces for adornment in a country that traditionally views jewellery as an investment. Around Valentine's Day this year, CaratLane launched 9-carat jewellery in a country that mainly buys 22-carat gold. Candere plans to open 80 stores in India in the year that started April 1, matching the number of higher-priced Kalyan locations planned for the same period, while larger-sized CaratLane aims to open more than 40 outlets, mostly in smaller cities. As of end-March, CaratLane had 322 stores, making it the second-largest jewellery brand by store count within the Tata Group. The brand contributes about 6% to Titan's overall revenue. "Overall growth (in fiscal 2026) ... will be no less than what we have done last year," CaratLane Managing Director Saumen Bhaumik said in an interview after market hours on Friday. In the year ended March 31, CaratLane's topline jumped 24% to 35.83 billion rupees ($418.96 million), with earnings before interest and taxes at 2.96 billion rupees, helping the brand record its best year. Profit for the nascent financial year "is going to be significantly better", Bhaumik said. In recent months, while soaring gold prices have led many Indians to opt for lightweight, lower-carat jewellery to stay within budget, Bhaumik said CaratLane's average bill value has still inched up by a tenth, aided by new launches. CaratLane plans to open a second U.S. store in Dallas by the festival of Deepavali this year and two Dubai outlets within eight months. ($1 = 85.5210 Indian rupees)
