Rajasthan cyclist Harshita Jakhar bagged two gold medals to share the limelight with Maharashtra swimmer Aditi Satish Hegde in the Khelo India Youth Games on Tuesday.
Harshita won a gold medal each in the scratch race and time trial (500m), while her cousin Aditya Jakhar emerged victorious in the boys scratch race. Earlier, Mayank Chaudhary bagged a gold in 10m air pistol event.
Rajasthan occupied the top spot with six gold and two silver. Karnataka (5 gold, 9 silver and 3 bronze) and Maharashtra (5 gold, 6 silver and 9 bronze) were in hot pursuit of Rajasthan.
Maharashtra's Aditi Satish Hegde, who won the 800m freestyle gold on Monday, added two more yellow metals to her collection by winning the 400m freestyle (4:32.87s) and 100m butterfly (1:04.73s) events on Tuesday.
Telangana enjoyed a good day in the BIPARD swimming pool in Gaya, winning three gold medals through Varshith Dhulipidi (boys 400m individual medley), Suhas Preetham Mylari (boys 100m backstroke) and Sri Nithya Sagi (girls 100m backstroke).
Meanwhile, Suhani Kumari did the star turn for Bihar as the host state entered the medal tally with two silver at the velodrome in the Indira Gandhi Indoor Complex in New Delhi.
She claimed a silver medal in the scratch race (7.5km), less than half a second behind Harshita.
Hailing from Saran district, she then teamed up with fellow Khelo India athlete from Siwan, Amrita Kumari and Shalini Kumari in the team sprint (3 laps) but could not stop the trio from neighbouring Jharkhand — Sabina Kumari, Sanju Kumari and Sindhu Lata Hembrom — from winning gold by a margin of just 1.323 seconds.
Harshita was the star attraction of the day. She won the scratch race, a gruelling event raced over 7.5km, clocking 11.50.973s ahead of Suhani Kumari (11.51.558s) and Akanksha Mhetre (Maharashtra, 11.51.649s).
Later, she won the time trial (500m), ahead of Akanksha (Maharashtra) and S Thabitha (Tamil Nadu).
Gujarat's judo players Divya Makwana (44kg class) and Khusbu Darjada (57kg) secured the first gold medals for the state. Divya Makwana beat Rahi Ghelani in the all-Gujarat final. Chandan Kumar Senma's bronze in the boys 55kg completed a good day for the western state.
Harshit's smooth sailing to the boys judo 73kg title helped Haryana heave a sigh of relief as the team finally made it to the list of states with gold medals in KIYG.

AP sports policy among the best in country: SAAP chairman
Rajamahendravaram: Andhra Pradesh has introduced one of the best sports policies in the country, thanks to Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's strong commitment to the development of sports, said Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) Chairman Ravi Naidu. Inaugurating the Godavari Pushkaralu Indoor Sports Complex at Venkataramaiah Nagar in the second division on Wednesday, he said that Andhra Pradesh's sports policy goes beyond those of other Indian states. Foundation stones were laid for 142 development projects and inauguration ceremonies were held for 19 works, totalling Rs 58.41 crore in investments. Speaking at the public gathering, Ravi Naidu stated that the new policy includes a comprehensive plan to promote sports from the grassroots level. The reservation quota for sportspersons in government jobs has been increased from 2% to 3%, and Olympic gold medalists will now be rewarded with Rs 7 crore and a Group 1 government job. In the latest DSC notification, 421 posts have been reserved under the sports quota, Naidu said. He also mentioned that athletes achieving success at the state and national levels are being given significant support by the government. Expressing his delight over the inauguration of the Indoor Sports Complex, he said that after Tirupati, Rajamahendravaram is the only city in the state to offer rifle shooting facilities. Plans are underway to introduce water sports shortly as well. Municipal Commissioner Ketan Garg said the government is giving priority to sports and is providing the necessary infrastructure to support athletes. He also stated that 25 parks are being beautifully developed, and efforts are being made to improve 20 traffic junctions across the city. Rajamahendravaram City MLA Adireddy Srinivas said that the government aims to transform the city into a major sports hub. The Godavari Pushkaralu Indoor Sports Complex will stand as a milestonein the city's history, created not just to offer basic amenities to pilgrims during Pushkaralu, but also to promote sports, he added. The complex was built with a total budget of Rs 3.41 crore, Rs 1.91 crore from municipal general funds, and Rs 1.5 crore from SAAP funds. It includes facilities for carroms, chess, table tennis, shooting, snooker, billiards, and a gym. It is expected to generate an annual revenue of Rs 10 lakh for the municipal corporation. MLA added that under the Khelo India initiative, a multi-purpose sports complex worth Rs 50 crore is being planned at the city's lorry stand area. Speaking on the occasion, MLC Somu Veerraju described Khelo India as a remarkable initiative aimed at identifying and nurturing sports talent. He said the objective is to enable Indian athletes to make their mark on the global sporting stage by providing the necessary facilities and encouragement. Bihar to establish residential sports school for para-athletes
Bihar is set to establish a dedicated Residential Sports School for Para-Athletes, the first of its kind in the region, the state government announced on Wednesday. The said initiative will be implemented under the 'Mukhyamantri Khel Vikas Mahatvkanshi Yojana' as part of one of the Eklavya Schools. This school is being established following India's performance at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, where Indian athletes brought home a record-breaking 29 medals - seven gold, nine silver and 13 bronze - marking the country's best-ever performance at the multi-discipline event. According to a statement from the Bihar State Sports Authority, 'The Residential Para Sports School aims not only to identify and train talent across Bihar and beyond but also to set a national benchmark in inclusive athlete development. It aligns with the Government of India's broader vision under the Khelo India and National Centre of Excellence (NCOE) frameworks, reinforcing that para-sports are not peripheral but central to India's sporting ambitions.' RMC submits ₹100 crore DPR to Centre for multi purpose sports complex
Rajamahendravaram City MLA Adireddi Srinivas announced on Wednesday that the Rajamahendravaram Municipal Corporation (RMC) had submitted a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to the Centre for establishing a ₹50 crore multi-purpose sports complex in the city under the Khelo India programme. The announcement was made during the inauguration of the Godavari Pushkaram indoor stadium, which was constructed at a cost of ₹3.41 crore, with ₹1.50 crore funding received from the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP). The civic body expects to generate ₹10 lakh in annual income from the complex. SAAP Chairman A. Ravi Naidu, MLC Somu Veerraju and RMC Commissioner Ketan Garg joined Mr. Srinivas at the inauguration ceremony. Mr. Naidu claimed that Rajamahendravaram is the second city in Andhra Pradesh to have a rifle shooting facility. In preparation for the Godavari Pushkarams-2027, Mr. Srinivas said that infrastructure and beautification projects worth ₹100 crore are underway. Meanwhile at the Adikavi Nannaya University, SAAP Chairman Mr. Ravi Naidu inspected the multi-purpose indoor stadium and swimming pool being constructed under the Khelo India programme. Vice-Chancellor S. Prasanna Sri said that the two facilities are being built at a cost of ₹10 crore, and construction is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
