‘We will beat British Government for second time in court' – Kneecap at largest ever gig

Next month will see 'the second time Kneecap have beat the British Government in court', the Irish rap trio said at their largest gig to date.
The 45,000-strong crowd in Finsbury Park, London watched them walk on in front of a screen that said 'Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people'.
They were supporting Irish band Fontaines DC, whose front man Grian Chatten joined to perform their collaboration Better Way To Live.
People echoed the Belfast group's chants when they repeated the 'f*** Keir Starmer' and 'you're just a s*** Jeremy Corbyn' comments made at Glastonbury the previous weekend.
Liam Óg O hAnnaidh, who performs as Mo Chara, appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court earlier this month charged with a terror offence and will return next month.
Fellow member Naoise Ó Cairealláin, who uses the stage name Móglaí Bap, said 'if anyone's free on the 20th of August, you wanna go to the court and support Mo Chara' before shouting 'free Mo Chara, free, free Mo Chara'.
Wearing a keffiyeh, Ó hAnnaidh responded: 'I appreciate it, the 20th of August is going to be the second time Kneecap have beat the British Government in court – in their own court, on their own terms, and we're going to beat them for the second time.
'I tell you what, there is nothing like embarrassing the British Government.'
Last year Kneecap won a discrimination challenge over a decision by former business secretary Kemi Badenoch to refuse them a £14,250 funding award.
The UK Government conceded it was 'unlawful' after the band launched legal action claiming the decision to refuse the grant discriminated against them on grounds of nationality and political opinion.
It was agreed that the £14,250 sum would be paid by the Government to the group.
During the performance the group intermittently broke off the mosh pits and raucous crowd by addressing the war in Gaza, which is a recurring theme of their shows.

Ó hAnnaidh said: 'It's usually around this point of the gig that we decide to talk about what's happening in Palestine.
'I understand that it's almost inhumane that I'm thinking of new things to say on stage during a genocide, for sound bites.
'It's beyond words now, like, we always used to say obviously they're being bombed from the skies with nowhere to go, but it's beyond that now.
'They've been being starved for a few months on end, and not only that, the areas that they have set up, to collect aid and food, have turned into killing fields and they're killing hundreds a day trying to collect food.'
He continued: 'It's beyond words, but again, we played in Plymouth last night to 750 people and we did the same thing, so it doesn't matter how big or small our audience is, Kneecap will always use the platform for talking about this.'
Ó Cairealláin had said earlier in the show: 'They can try and silence us, they can try and stop us, but we're not going to stop talking about Palestine – as long as there's a genocide happening in Palestine we're going to keep talking about it and yous are going to keep talking about it, and they can't stop us.'

'Kneecap is not the story. Genocide in Gaza is' – Belfast rappers release new video demanding action against Israel
The UN human rights office has recorded 613 killings near humanitarian convoys and at aid distribution points in Gaza run by an Israeli-backed American organisation since it began operations in late May.
On Friday its spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani said the rights office was not able to attribute responsibility for the killings, but 'it is clear that the Israeli military has shelled and shot at Palestinians trying to reach the distribution points' operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF).
The GHF has denied any serious injuries or deaths on its sites and says shootings outside their immediate vicinity are under the purview of Israel's military.
The Israeli military has said previously it fires warning shots to control crowds or at Palestinians who approach its troops.

Lidl Ireland unveils Oasis-inspired jacket ahead of band's Croke Park reunion shows

RETAILER Lidl Ireland has unveiled a jacket inspired by Oasis ahead of the band's forthcoming reunion shows at Croke Park next month. The 'Lidl by Lidl' jacket — a play on the band's 2002 hit Little By Little — goes on sale at 10am on Wednesday, with all proceeds going to charity. The garment was inspired by singer Liam Gallagher's collaboration with fashion brand Berghaus last year, which saw him sporting a £400 jacket in the same colours as the Lidl logo. The discount retailer says its own €35 (£30) jacket is ideal for gigs as it features two built-in drink cooling pockets and a zipper that doubles as a bottle opener. "This isn't just a jacket… it's a backstage pass to the ultimate party," quipped the retailer. 'Ultimate throwback jacket' Oasis — featuring second-generation Irish brothers Noel and Liam — got their reunion tour underway this weekend with shows in Cardiff on Friday and Saturday. Next Friday sees them begin a run of five shows in their home city of Manchester, followed by five shows at Wembley and three in Edinburgh. They then head to Dublin for two shows at Croke Park on August 16 and 17. Eimear O'Sullivan, Corporate Affairs Director at Lidl Ireland & Northern Ireland, hailed the jacket as another of Lidl's 'middle aisle gems'. "The Croke Park gigs are the most hotly-anticipated gigs of the summer and now Oasis fans can relive '90s nostalgia and commemorate a piece of Irish rock and roll history with the limited-edition Lidl by Lidl jacket," she said. "Since the announcement of the Irish gigs, we've been overwhelmed by the response from the Irish public to see a 'Lidl by Lidl' product and, as Ireland's leading discount retailer, we're renowned for our middle aisle gems and quirky merch which has become synonymous with summer festival season. "We're thrilled to launch the ultimate throwback jacket that's sure to be a hit with both Oasis and Lidl fans. "We can't wait to see fans fill Croke Park kitted out in this summer's must-have merch." Tambourine Lidl says that the jacket — which sports a Lidl by Lidl badge on the sleeve — also comes with a tambourine 'for spontaneous jam sessions'. Meanwhile, Lidl GB is offering fans who miss out on the limited edition garment a branded bucket hat and pair of Lidl aviators, which will be available on the website for free. The jackets go on sale this Wednesday, with Lidl Ireland donating 100 per cent of sales to its charity partner, Family Carers Ireland, while Lidl GB will donate all proceeds to the NSPCC. China curbs EU medtech procurement from today

China will impose some reciprocal curbs on medical-device procurement for companies based in the European Union, adding tensions between the two major trading partners just as Beijing seeks to shore up ties while it fights a trade war with the US. Starting from today, Sunday, EU-based companies will be excluded from the Chinese government procurement for certain medical devices if the value is higher than 45m Chinese yuan (€5.3m), according to a statement from the country's ministry of finance on Sunday. Medtech's key role in Irish economy There are approximately 450 medical device and technology companies operating in Ireland, including nine of the world's 10 largest companies in this space. According to Irish Medtech, the sector employs more than 48,000 people. Products made by EU-funded companies in China are not impacted by the curbs, its ministry of commerce said in a separate statement. China's move came after the EU announced plans to restrict Chinese medical device manufacturers from accessing public procurement contracts worth more than €5m. The measures will restrict Chinese companies from accessing around 60% of the public spending in this field, or around €150bn, according to an EU official familiar with the plans. The EU will also allow no more than 50% of inputs from China for successful bids. Chinese medtech sales into EU Chinese exports of medical devices to the EU have more than doubled between 2015 and 2023, the European Commission said in a statement. In another sign of increasing tensions between Europe and Beijing, the Chinese government intended to shorten a two-day summit with EU leaders this month to just a day, Bloomberg reported on Friday. China also announced anti-dumping duties on European brandy on Friday while exempting major cognac makers that agreed to minimum price levels. The action followed the EU's decision in 2024 to levy duties as high as 45% on Chinese-made electric vehicles. European countries have complained that the Chinese government has failed to address overcapacity in sectors including steel, unfair subsidies, and market access to its economy. Bloomberg

RTE 2FM star ties the knot in stunning sustainable Wicklow ceremony

2FM star Fionnuala Moran has paid a touching tribute to her late grandmother on her wedding day. The sustainability influencer tied the knot to her long-term love and rap artist, Aaron Hartigan, whose stage name is Rebel Phoenix, at a stunning ceremony in Rathsallagh Country House, Co Wicklow. The radio host stunned in a tulle and deep v neckline with a stunning corseted bodice gown by Aleena Leena's 'Clivia', which she bought at sustainable bridal boutique Cirq in Naas, Co Kildare. The bride wore her late Granny Angela's ring as her something old, borrowed and blue, along with her now-vintage Panache By Lentheric perfume, which Fionnuala had kept since the beloved Macroom-native passed away in 1997. The bride is the first in the world to wear the Grá veil down the aisle. It's part of Mizz Rio's new Daughters of Ireland Collection, inspired by Maud Gonne's Inghinidhe na hÉireann movement, founded in 1900 to promote Irish culture and strive for our independence. During the ceremony, the couple embody positive patriotism, and their love of Éire was woven through their ceremony from hand fastening as Gaeilge to ancient bog oak, water and swan feather Celtic blessings by Trish Cameron of Temple of Eriú, who uphold Ireland's ancient spiritual traditions. The bride's veil had pink beading displaying Grá in Ogham, Ireland's oldest language. This was also a nod to the groom Rebel Phoenix's musical community 'Rebel Mafia', for which he uses an ogham logo. Fionnuala completed her look with shoes by Irish designer Nicky Hoyne. For her second look of the evening, Fionnuala slipped into a gorgeous Clio Peppiatt number, the Lucina embellished stretch-mesh mini, to be exact. For her engagement ring, wedding ring and bracelet, the couple chose from Dublin family-run business Gray's Jewellers, based just off Grafton Street in the Westbury Mall. The walled garden ceremony in her home county saw the bride wear hand-crafted white and gold flower earrings created by Georgia Charal and purchased in The Design Collective of Dublin's Drury Street. Across the two day celebration, Fionnuala wore pieces a De Vali dress Irish bridal resale website Rebride, a Needle & Thread dress from secondhand site Reliked, Dublin consignment store Siopaella, vintage jewellery from Kearns, Clio Peppiatt, vintage Oscar de la Renta earrings from Wendy's Way of Life in The 59 Collective in The Powerscourt Townhouse Centre and a second shorter veil for dancing the night away that she nabbed for her hen for just €15 in the since-closed bridal room of SVP's charity shop on George's Street. Fionnuala and Aaron's beloved pooches, Farrah and Alfie, were in attendance on their big day, and the 2FM star previously teased that one of them had a special outfit for the day that was in it. In January, Fionnuala told her followers: 'This diva is getting her own wedding dress made out of the excess from mine when I get it altered. 'Ridiculous, I know, but she's my bébé. They'll be involved in the ceremony and then whisked away with a fun minder.' Guests, which included 98FM star Paul Ryder and FM104 host and actor David O'Reilly, enjoyed a champagne reception, followed by music from Eurosong's NIYL and Twink's daughter Chloe Agnew, who made up The X Collective.
