Uganda Gears Up for Important Rematch over National Democracy

Morocco World26-06-2025
Rabat – Yoweri Museveni, the long-time President of Uganda, is likely to run again for a seventh term. This comes as an official from his National Resistance Movement Party, which confirmed that he will receive the national electoral forms on Saturday.
Museveni has been the president of Uganda since taking power in 1986, after a turbulent period following the downfall of Idi Amin. The President is now 80 years old and is running for his seventh term in office .
The NRM has amended the national constitution twice to be able to extend Museveni's time of office. In 2005, the party removed term limits, and in 2017 removed age restrictions.
President Museveni is now the fifth-longest-serving world leader, and the fourth-longest-serving leader in Africa. He has largely maintained his position through widespread patronage and intimidation of opponents.
During his time in office, Museveni has been accused repeatedly of human rights violations and has led many violent crackdowns on Ugandan democracy.
Tanga Odoi, the chairman of the NRM's electoral body, stated that 'the president will pick up expression of interest forms for two positions, one for chairperson of the party and the other to contest, if he is given the chance as the presidential flag bearer.'
Museveni has recently been cracking down on his electoral opponents, having them arrested and executed. In 2024, Kizza Besigye, a major opponent of the President, was kidnapped in Kenya and is now on death row.
The major opponent in the January elections will be Bobi Wine. On Wednesday, the opposition party, the National Unity Party, said that Wine had 'submitted the expression of interests to contest for the President of Uganda.'
Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, is a popular Ugandan singer and pro-democracy activist. He has been a major opponent of Museveni in recent years.
During the 2021 election, Wine came in second place, winning popular support of citizens, especially young people, leading a successful online campaign. After the election, the NUP had criticised the integrity.
Museveni's heir, his son General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, had recently been reported to have called for Bobi Wine to be beheaded.
These announcements set up the Ugandan elections to be an important electoral rematch for the future of the East African nation's democracy . Tags: Morocco and UgandaMorocco and Uganda Bilateral Football Agreement

Kenya Seeks Morocco's Cybercrime Expertise to Bolster Security

Marrakech – During talks in Nairobi on Thursday with Morocco's Ambassador to Kenya and South Sudan, Abderrazzak Laassel, Kenya's Attorney General Renson Ingonga spoke emphatically of the East African country's desire to benefit from Morocco's expertise in fighting cybercrime. Ingonga praised Morocco's major advances in digital forensics, describing it as a priority cooperation area for Kenya. 'The Morocco-Kenya partnership continues to play a decisive role in promoting common objectives in the justice sector, particularly in fighting transnational organized crime,' said the Kenyan judicial official. The Attorney General called for continued experience-sharing in combating corruption and economic crimes between the two countries. In response, Ambassador Laassel characterized the bilateral partnership as 'mutually beneficial' and confirmed the North African country's commitment to strengthening this dynamic through technical support, joint training programs, and exchange of best judicial practices. Both parties reviewed progress in implementing their partnership and examined areas of common interest, specifically in fighting terrorism, cybercrime, corruption, and financial crime. They agreed to consolidate bilateral collaboration, especially in continuous training for prosecutors from both countries. Held at the Kenya Attorney General's office, the meeting builds on a memorandum of understanding signed in 2023 between the public prosecutors' offices of both countries. The agreement established a framework for cooperation on judicial sector reforms, capacity building, and joint action against transnational organized crime. Western Sahara at the heart of the Nairobi-Rabat diplomatic honeymoon This cybersecurity cooperation comes as Rabat-Nairobi ties enter a new era, driven by a pivotal recalibration in foreign policy. Late last May, Kenya, which used to be a strong Polisario ally, decided to correct course by recognizing Morocco's 2007 Autonomy Plan as the only sustainable approach to resolving the artificial dispute over the Sahara. The two countries agreed to enhance their political and economic partnership during talks between Morocco's Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his Kenyan counterpart Musalia Mudavadi in Rabat. The ministers inaugurated the Embassy of Kenya in Rabat and oversaw the signing of five memorandums of understanding covering various sectors, including housing, youth affairs, diplomatic training, trade cooperation, and public service capacity development. Kenya now 'intends to cooperate with countries that share the same vision to implement this plan,' according to a joint statement. Kenya also hailed 'the increasing international consensus and the dynamic led by His Majesty King Mohammed VI supporting the autonomy plan presented by Morocco, as the only realistic and credible solution to settle this dispute over the Sahara.' Morocco to Contribute to Ghana's Food Security with 2,000 Tons of Fertilizer Donation

Rabat – Morocco has renewed its commitment to contributing to Africa's food security through its fertilizer donation program, with Ghana being the latest beneficiary of the North African country's pan-African vision of contributing to reducing food poverty across the continent. Ghana's Foreign Affairs Minister, Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the news on his X account last week, noting that the significant agreements the two countries signed include food security cooperation. The cooperation agreement will begin with a free donation of 2,000 tonnes of fertilizers to Ghanaian farmers, as well as technical support for the construction of a modern fertilizer manufacturing plant in Ghana, the minister detailed. Morocco has been expressing its commitment to contributing to the continent's food security efforts through different programs, including fertilizer donations. OCP, Morocco's giant fertilizer group, has been donating fertilizers or offering discounts on prices on fertilizers to many countries on the continent. In July, OCP donated 15,000 tonnes of diammonium phosphate fertilizers to Rwanda in a bid to help the East African country increase its agricultural production. The same month saw Morocco donating 3,924 bags of fertilizers to Saint Lucia to assist local farmers and reduce production costs. In December 2022, Morocco also donated 5,000 tonnes of fertilizers to smallholder farmers in Mauritania. In October of the same year, Morocco donated 25,0000 tonnes of fertilizer to smallholder farmers in Senegal. The country's recent fertilizer donation to Ghana comes as the two African nations are working to boost their cooperation and bilateral ties further at all levels. Okudzeto Ablakwa stressed the importance of the other agreements he signed during his visit to Morocco, including scholarships for Ghanaian students, training of young Ghanaian students to become pilots at Morocco's prestigious pilot training academy, as well as educational exchange programs in many areas of shared strategic priority. During his visit to Morocco, the Ghanaian minister expressed his country's support for Morocco's Autonomy Plan as the most serious and credible political pathway to end the dispute over Western Sahara. The news came as a new setback to Algeria's regime activism, which has unsuccessfully continued to challenge Morocco's sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara. Kenya made the same announcement last month, joining a relentlessly growing list of countries that now regard the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative as the only feasible political horizon for peace, stability, and prosperity in the Sahara.
