MP calls for greater community participation in volunteer, welfare efforts
MIRI (July 15): Greater community involvement in welfare initiatives is essential for expanding the reach and impact of such assistance, said Miri MP Chiew Choon Man.
He stressed that despite ongoing welfare efforts, many vulnerable communities continue to require support.
'By having more people participate in welfare work, we can extend help to a greater number of individuals and allow the warmth of society's love to be felt more widely,' he said.
Chiew was met following a courtesy visit from Persatuan Prihatin Masyarakat Miri (PPMM) led by chairman Lee Jun Tak, during which he was invited to attend the upcoming 722 Kek-Nyalang Sarawak multicultural cake-sharing charity programme.
The event is scheduled to take place on July 22 from 2pm to 4pm at Boulevard Shopping Mall, Pujut.
Adding on, Chiew said today's youth are not only the backbone of the nation's future but also serve as powerful agents of change.
'They are the most energetic and idealistic group. We should provide them platforms to discover their self-worth through volunteer work and build their identity by helping others.'
He advocated for structured mechanisms to promote youth engagement in community service, including the development of youth volunteer programmes and leadership initiatives to empower the next generation of welfare leaders.
'Miri has long demonstrated a strong spirit of unity and mutual support. With more kind-hearted individuals stepping forward, the caring culture of our city will continue to grow,' he said.

Sekretariat Solidariti Zara, which comprises university students and civil society groups, also called for the outcomes of the commission's investigations to be made public. The group submitted a memorandum to MPs outside the Parliament building in Kuala Lumpur today, after marching from Taman Tugu while carrying banners and placards calling for justice for Zara. In the memorandum, they urged the home ministry and police to hold an inquest into Zara's death. For many years, bullying cases have occurred without holistic solutions and concrete policy reforms,' said the memorandum. It also urged the police to publicly apologise for the delay in probing Zara's death as well as the purported mishandling of the investigation. 'Delayed action reflects not only weak governance, but also a failure to uphold the responsibility of ensuring students' safety.' The group urged the home ministry to carry out specialised training for police officers to better handle bullying cases, and for teachers, school administrators and wardens to undergo mandatory training for crisis intervention and proper methods to receive complaints from bullying victims. It likewise urged the education ministry to engage with civil society to improve its SOPs on handling bullying cases in schools. Two days ago, Zara's remains were exhumed for a post-mortem after the Attorney-General's Chambers ordered the police to further investigate the 13-year-old's death. Yesterday, Bukit Aman announced that it would take over the investigation of the case. Zara was found unconscious at 4am on July 16 after allegedly falling from the third floor of her school's hostel in Papar, Sabah. She died in hospital the following day. The education ministry subsequently announced that it would review its SOPs and guidelines on school safety and for handling disciplinary issues, including bullying. Education director-general Azam Ahmad said the ministry's portal for bullying complaints would also be simplified, with students filing complaints on bullying given the option to remain anonymous to protect their identity.

Federal govt aims for 3 Jualan Rahmah sales weekly in Miri, says MP

MIRI (Aug 3): The federal government aims to organise an average of three 'Jualan Rahmah' sales per week in Miri to help ease the financial burden of locals, said Miri MP Chiew Choon Man. He said this follows the increase of the programme's allocation to RM600 million as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on July 23. 'Once the new allocation is disbursed and the implementation mechanism is finalised, we aim to conduct up to 12 Rahmah Sales per month, or an average of three a week,' he said in a statement yesterday. Earlier, Chiew visited a Jualan Rahmah Madani programme at Surau Darul Falah, Kampung Lembah Hijau Riam, organised by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) in collaboration with Emart Supermarket Riam. The Jualan Rahmah Madani programme was also held simultaneously at SMK Pujut. According to Chiew, the Jualan Rahmah initiative offers essential items such as rice, eggs, chicken, cooking oil, flour, and milk powder at up to 30 per cent discount to help reduce the cost of living. 'For the programme at Surau Darul Falah, 19 essential items were offered at subsidised prices, making it easier for residents to obtain daily necessities at more affordable rates,' he said. Chiew said that as of August 2, a total of 59 Jualan Rahmah programmes have been held in the Miri parliamentary constituency, averaging seven to eight sales per month. 'This is a marked increase compared to four to five monthly sales in 2024,' he noted. He also commended participating supermarkets for going the extra mile by offering promotions on other products during the programme, further increasing the benefits for the community. 'This shows the government's continued commitment to reaching out directly to both rural and urban communities and ensuring that assistance reaches the people in a meaningful way.' RM31m flood mitigation plan launched for Miri River Basin, early warning system in pipeline, says MP
MIRI, Aug 1 — Several key flood mitigation projects are currently being carried out in the Miri parliamentary constituency to address recurring flood issues, said Miri MP Chiew Choon Man. Chiew, in a statement yesterday, said the initiatives were part of the government's broader efforts following major floods in Sarawak earlier this year. 'In the current parliamentary sitting, I submitted a question to the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra) regarding flood mitigation plans for Miri and follow-up actions after the recent floods,' he said. He said in its reply, the ministry informed that the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) is implementing several key initiatives. Among them is the Flood Mitigation Plan (RTB) for the Miri River Basin, currently underway with an allocation of RM31 million. The project is scheduled for completion in January 2026. In addition, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Programme (PRAB) is being rolled out in phases across Sarawak. 'PRAB Phase 2, which covers two major river basins in the state, is expected to be completed by 2028, while Phase 3 – involving 19 major river basins including Miri – is set to begin in March 2026,' he said. While welcoming the ministry's comprehensive plans, Chiew cautioned that successful outcomes would depend on timely execution, adequate funding, and close coordination between federal, state, and local authorities. 'I will continue to engage with the relevant agencies to monitor progress and ensure these projects deliver tangible benefits to the people of Miri,' he said.
