Bhubaneswar: The state has reported over 650 dengue cases, including more than 200 cases in Bhubaneswar, since Jan 1, prompting the govt to intensify both active and passive surveillance efforts to curb the spread of the vector-borne disease, officials said.
Dr Nilakantha Mishra, director of public health, said Malkangiri and Cuttack followed Bhubaneswar with 60 and 50 cases, respectively.
Mishra said that out of 50,000 dengue tests conducted this year, over 650 returned positive. "This year, we observed a decrease in dengue cases compared to last year's 1,080 recorded till July last week," he said. The Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) is actively analysing the situation across various areas to implement necessary control measures.
With the capital city recording the highest number of dengue cases, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and health teams have ramped up efforts to control the situation. Official sources said Patia, Sikharchandi and Prasanti Vihar are the primary areas reporting new cases. In response, BMC is working to eliminate breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes, the carrier of dengue virus.
Health teams are also engaging in community outreach to educate residents about dengue prevention.

They are urging people to avoid storing water in and around their homes, as stagnant water serves as mosquito breeding ground. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to mitigate the impact of dengue and protect public health.
"As the state continues to battle the seasonal surge in dengue cases, authorities remain vigilant, employing a combination of surveillance, community engagement and mosquito control measures to safeguard citizens," said the officer.
Last year, dengue cases were reported in Balasore, Khurda and Sundargarh districts. Therefore, the govt has taken steps for extensive public awareness, diagnosis and treatment for the prevention and control of malaria and dengue cases. Emphasis was also placed on creating widespread public awareness through information, education and communication measures to prevent the diseases.

At Jiwhala Club 60+, they light up twilight years

1 2 Nagpur: Ageing with health issues, lack of emotional support, and a sense of loneliness can take a serious mental health toll on senior citizens, especially those whose children live away. If no timely intervention or care is provided, some of such senior citizens tend to see the futility of carrying on with life. That seems to be the reason, as initial reports suggest, behind the alleged suicide pact of an 80-year-old homeopathy doctor and his 70-year-old wife in the city recently. While the doctor, unfortunately, couldn't survive, his wife is fighting for life. The elderly couple lived alone, and their suicide notes spoke of health struggles, loneliness, and unfulfilled dreams. While the tragedy points to the growing isolation faced by senior citizens, it also underlines the urgent need for emotional support systems for the elderly — especially those whose children live away. At such a time, Jiwhala Club 60+, a unique support group in Nagpur started in 2019 by a group of volunteers led by Avinash Sangwai, is quietly offering a lifeline to many senior citizens. Jiwhala, meaning affection, is more than just a club. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo It is an emotional safety net for elders whose children are settled outside Nagpur or even abroad. "We realised that though parents proudly send their children away for education and career, later in life, a deep void takes over. Jiwhala Club was born out of this very need — to fill that emotional gap and create joyful moments in their golden years," says Sangwai, the guiding force behind Jiwhala. Jiwhala Club 60+ has just completed six meaningful years. What began with a simple idea — to bring together senior citizens for birthdays and lunch outings — has now evolved into a thriving emotional community. The club organises monthly birthday celebrations complete with a homely satvik meal, a sweet dish, music, and long, heartfelt conversations. "During these gatherings, we talk about childhood memories, old workplaces, family anecdotes, and more. The idea is to reconnect with the joy of living," said Vilas Deshpande. "It also becomes a trusted place where people open up about their worries, health issues, and even their loneliness. The healing happens quietly," he added. Over the years, Jiwhala has built a reliable support system. From emotional management to helping with daily challenges, the group is always ready to step in. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they took risks to support elderly members with food, medicines, and emotional reassurance. In fact, Jiwhala has reached out beyond its circle too. In the last six years, it has financially supported around 30 single-parent girls by collecting donations from the community. It has also honoured unsung social workers and brought them to the public spotlight, even getting them TEDx speaking opportunities. "Happiness is our goal, and we are increasing the happiness index of our elders, one step at a time," added Narendra Kulkarni, one of the founder members. The club has become a second family for many. As members age, their bond with Jiwhala grows stronger. Some of them have said they wait eagerly for the club's get-togethers — it gives them something to look forward to, something to dress up for, and someone to talk to without hesitation. Each birthday celebration is not just about cutting a cake — it's about feeling seen, loved, and celebrated. Dr Gangadharrao Harne's death by suicide is a wake-up call. Jiwhala Club 60+ shows that small gestures, consistent care, and community support can go a long way in preventing such tragedies. "Let's not just extend the lifespan of our seniors, but enhance the joy in those years," said Sangwai. Probe after cardboard splints used to support bone fractures at DHH

Sambalpur: Authorities of Bargarh district headquarters hospital on Saturday launched an internal investigation after images of cardboard splints being allegedly used to support bone fractures of accident victims went viral. Bargarh's chief district medical and public health officer, Kuber Chandra Mohanta, told TOI, "The images of cardboard splints used to support bone fractures are from four days back, but the exact time when the incident took place is under investigation. We are finding out how many patients were given cardboard splints." While the videos of cardboard casts being used are being circulated for a week, the hospital authorities are yet to ascertain how many days the "makeshift treatment" was done. Mohanta added, "Accident patients with bone injuries are directly referred to Vimsar, Burla, as Bargarh DHH doesn't have an orthopaedic surgeon for the last six years. Accident patients having only minor injuries are treated at the DHH." Social volunteers claimed the accident victims were given preliminary treatment at the DHH to stop the bleeding, and then cardboard splints were used to keep their limbs straight, and then they were bandaged. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Are The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo The patients were taken to Vimsar for further treatment. Alok Sahu, a patient's attendant, said, "When we came to Vimsar for further treatment, the doctors and attendants there were shocked to hear about the makeshift treatment." Goa's births per year down by over 4,000 in just 10 years

Panaji: Over a period of 10 years, the number of births registered in a year in Goa has come down by 4,341. The lowest annual birth number was registered in 2021 at 15,396, a steep decline from 21,667 births registered in 2013, as per the office of the Registrar General of India's report 'Vital Statistics of India Based on Civil Registration System 2022'. The report also shows that after the Covid-19 pandemic hit, the deaths registered exceeded the number of registered births for the first time in 2021. The number of births registered during the year was 15,396, while the number of deaths recorded was 18,337. The numbers normalised by 2022 with 17,326 deaths registered against 14,990 births. However, the report confirms what state reports have earlier indicated: while the number of births has dropped by 4,341, the number of deaths registered has gone up by 2,794 over the years in Goa. This is contributing to a slowdown in Goa's population growth rate, as indicated earlier by the state's recent economic survey. Over a period of just five years, Goa's birth rate saw a dramatic drop from 13.3 per thousand in 2017 to just 9.7 in 2021. The state already has among the lowest fertility rates in the country, at less than two children per woman, which is below the replacement rate, as per the Economic Survey 2023. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ranked: The 25 Best Cities To Live In The World Learn More Undo The survey also showed that there is an increase in deaths in Goa caused by diseases such as heart ailments, cancers, and diabetes. Such illnesses were found to form the cause of over 47% of natural deaths in Goa. Previous data from the Registrar General of India already established that Goa is among nine states with a fertility rate below the replacement rate, at 1.7 children born per woman. Though there are other states where fertility rates are even lower, Goa is the only state that has both a low fertility rate and the lowest birth rate in the country. The Registrar General of India's 2022 report, in the meantime, said that Goa was among 13 states and UTs in the country where more than 90% of the births were registered within the prescribed period of 21 days as per central norms. However, when it came to deaths, the registration in Goa within the prescribed 21 days was not as much and was in the 80-90% bracket. The report also said that though all birth and death records in the state are computerised and 'the system is functioning smoothly, effectively and efficiently', 'there is a possibility of damage to the physical birth/death records as the registers containing these records are worn out over the years'.
