Rams' 25 most important players for 2025 – No. 10: LG Steve Avila
Heading into the 2025 season, Avila has the type of talent and potential to make the Pro Bowl and become one of the best guards in football. He's the clear-cut starter on the left side and with the Rams lacking a backup of his ability, his health and availability are critical to the offense's success.
How he got here
Avila was the 36th overall pick in 2023, entering the NFL after a successful career at TCU. He was the Rams' first pick that year, someone they really liked in the draft – and they didn't hesitate to take him in the second round.

10 games (10 starts): 19 pressures allowed, 3 sacks allowed, 50.6 pass-blocking grade, 70.6 run-blocking grade (via PFF)
Projected role
Avila will be the Rams' starting left guard for the third straight year, especially with there being no question marks about who will play center like there was last season with Jonah Jackson. After moving between guard and center last offseason, Avila is certain to be stationed at left guard with Coleman Shelton at center.
As long as he's healthy, he'll play every snap on the O-line.
Why he's important
The Rams got a taste of what life was like without Avila last season when he missed seven games due to an MCL injury. In those seven games, Stafford was sacked 15 times, including 11 times in the first four games alone without Avila.
Justin Dedich struggled mightily in his last two games before Avila returned and Logan Bruss was even worse while filling in at that spot. Those seven games really showed the value of Avila, who was by no means perfect in Year 2 but probably deserves more credit than his PFF grade suggests.
He's an excellent run blocker and could still improve in pass protection, but he's absolutely an above-average starting left guard. The Rams need him to stay healthy, especially with Alaric Jackson uncertain at left tackle due to his blood clots.

NFL teams have until early May to decide on placing the fifth-year option on a player, meaning the 2026 free agency period and draft will take place before Dallas has to declare their intentions. As Smith is not goin to reach any of the playtime incentives tied to a higher tender amount, he'll need to become a Pro Bowl player to garner something above the basic compensation level for a defensive tackle. That annually escalating number was $12.9 million for 2022 first rounder Jordan Davis. Smith started all 17 games last season and ended up with the same number of sacks he did while starting three games as a rookie; three. Sacks aren't supposed to be an integral part to his game, but he's done nothing to solidify the Cowboys' run defense and keep the linebackers clean when he's on the field. He's morphed into a 300-plus pound under technique in some ways, a far cry from what was envisioned when he was taken out of Michigan. Dallas did very little to provide him with competition this offseason, choosing a similar route to how they did with disappointing 2024 first rounder Tyler Guyton. Sixth-round pick Jay Toia, from UCLA, is pretty much the extent of what has been done to elevate the position, with 2023 UDFA Denzel Daxon returning as well. Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix received glowing reviews from his teammates throughout his rookie season, and after an offseason to recharge, Nix should be poised to take another step forward in 2025. "He continued to show improvement, and I think that's the only thing you can really ask for from a young player. Players at any position are trying to improve. I'm excited for him. According to Steelers insider Mark Kaboly during an appearance on 93.7 The Fan, the team has inquired about what return they could get in a Watt trade. "[T]hey are obviously inquiring to see what that might be," Kaboly said. "I'm sure that's due diligence there at this point, right?" Kaboly did contradict himself in a post on X after his radio appearance. "Steelers are still in a holding pattern with T.J. Watt's contract extension. Length of deal, guarantees and total value -- basically everything, to some varying degrees -- are the sticking points right now," he wrote. "Even so, there is no anticipation for Watt to holdout when camp starts on July 23 and there has been no inquires made to other teams about trading him, according to sources." Obviously, the truth is that no one really knows where Pittsburgh and Watt stand. While the two sides are still expected to get something done, that could change.
