Rams' 25 most important players for 2025 – No. 10: LG Steve Avila
Heading into the 2025 season, Avila has the type of talent and potential to make the Pro Bowl and become one of the best guards in football. He's the clear-cut starter on the left side and with the Rams lacking a backup of his ability, his health and availability are critical to the offense's success.
How he got here
Avila was the 36th overall pick in 2023, entering the NFL after a successful career at TCU. He was the Rams' first pick that year, someone they really liked in the draft – and they didn't hesitate to take him in the second round.
2024 stats
10 games (10 starts): 19 pressures allowed, 3 sacks allowed, 50.6 pass-blocking grade, 70.6 run-blocking grade (via PFF)
Projected role
Avila will be the Rams' starting left guard for the third straight year, especially with there being no question marks about who will play center like there was last season with Jonah Jackson. After moving between guard and center last offseason, Avila is certain to be stationed at left guard with Coleman Shelton at center.
As long as he's healthy, he'll play every snap on the O-line.
Why he's important
The Rams got a taste of what life was like without Avila last season when he missed seven games due to an MCL injury. In those seven games, Stafford was sacked 15 times, including 11 times in the first four games alone without Avila.
Justin Dedich struggled mightily in his last two games before Avila returned and Logan Bruss was even worse while filling in at that spot. Those seven games really showed the value of Avila, who was by no means perfect in Year 2 but probably deserves more credit than his PFF grade suggests.
He's an excellent run blocker and could still improve in pass protection, but he's absolutely an above-average starting left guard. The Rams need him to stay healthy, especially with Alaric Jackson uncertain at left tackle due to his blood clots.

Can flameout first rounder convince Cowboys to extend $13 million, fifth-year option?
Will Mazi Smith survive Season No. 3 and earn a Season No. 4 in Dallas? Could he play so well they lock him in for a Season 5 when it's all said and done? With the way the first two campaigns have gone, a fifth-year option for the defensive tackle seems like a pipe dream at this point. Smith, playing under first Dan Quinn and then Mike Zimmer, has yet to find a way to turn his freakish athleticism into on-field pro production. Technique and reaction time issues have been his downfall since being a shocking first-round draft pick for the club in 2023, and it will now be on Matt Eberflus and Aaron Whitecotton to unlock the puzzle that is his performance on the defensive line's interior. If they can't, then perhaps it's time for the Cowboys to cut bait and move in a different direction. Rundown Position: Defensive Tackle Age: 26 (Week 1 age) Height: 6-foot-3 Weight: 337 pounds Hometown: Kentwood, MI High School: East Kentwood College: Michigan (Film Study Video) Draft: 2023 First-round pick (No. 26 Overall) Acquired: 2023 Draft Contract: Four-year contract (2023), $13.2 million 2025 Base Salary: $2 million (guaranteed) | Cap Hit: $3.6 million Career Earnings: $8.7 million (per Over The Cap) Profile Whitecotton has his work cut out for him with Smith, but perhaps maturity will be the key ingredient in him being able to turn his early career around. NFL teams have until early May to decide on placing the fifth-year option on a player, meaning the 2026 free agency period and draft will take place before Dallas has to declare their intentions. As Smith is not goin to reach any of the playtime incentives tied to a higher tender amount, he'll need to become a Pro Bowl player to garner something above the basic compensation level for a defensive tackle. That annually escalating number was $12.9 million for 2022 first rounder Jordan Davis. Smith started all 17 games last season and ended up with the same number of sacks he did while starting three games as a rookie; three. Sacks aren't supposed to be an integral part to his game, but he's done nothing to solidify the Cowboys' run defense and keep the linebackers clean when he's on the field. He's morphed into a 300-plus pound under technique in some ways, a far cry from what was envisioned when he was taken out of Michigan. Dallas did very little to provide him with competition this offseason, choosing a similar route to how they did with disappointing 2024 first rounder Tyler Guyton. Sixth-round pick Jay Toia, from UCLA, is pretty much the extent of what has been done to elevate the position, with 2023 UDFA Denzel Daxon returning as well. Broncos' All-Pro guard Quinn Meinerz impressed by QB Bo Nix's improvement
Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix received glowing reviews from his teammates throughout his rookie season, and after an offseason to recharge, Nix should be poised to take another step forward in 2025. 'I've said it over and over again, [I've] been impressed [by Nix] every single week," Broncos All-Pro guard Quinn Meinerz said after the 2024 season wrapped up. "He continued to show improvement, and I think that's the only thing you can really ask for from a young player. Players at any position are trying to improve. I'm excited for him. "That rookie year is kind of tough. You have your college season, you have the pre-draft stuff, you have Combine training and then you go through an NFL season. I'm excited for him to get some time off. That's what he needs right now is to get some time off to reset a little bit because the next season will be here quickly.' Nix played through a back injury last season, and he opted out of the Pro Bowl to undergo ankle surgery after the season. Despite those ailments, Nix had an incredibly impressive rookie season, and he's now fully healthy going into Year 2. It seems fair to expect Nix to continue trending up in 2025. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Pittsburgh Steelers are locked into an ever-changing situation with superstar pass rusher T.J. Watt. While the wide expectation has been that the two sides will work out a new contract, nothing has happened yet. Watt is one of the best defensive players in the NFL. He wants to be paid like that. So far, the Steelers have not been willing to meet his demands. That has led to a standoff between the two parties with training camp and preseason action right around the corner. T.J. According to Steelers insider Mark Kaboly during an appearance on 93.7 The Fan, the team has inquired about what return they could get in a Watt trade. "[T]hey are obviously inquiring to see what that might be," Kaboly said. "I'm sure that's due diligence there at this point, right?" Kaboly did contradict himself in a post on X after his radio appearance. "Steelers are still in a holding pattern with T.J. Watt's contract extension. Length of deal, guarantees and total value -- basically everything, to some varying degrees -- are the sticking points right now," he wrote. "Even so, there is no anticipation for Watt to holdout when camp starts on July 23 and there has been no inquires made to other teams about trading him, according to sources." Obviously, the truth is that no one really knows where Pittsburgh and Watt stand. While the two sides are still expected to get something done, that could change. A trade is still a possibility until a new deal is completed. Read more: Vikings Legend Randy Moss Has Strong Words for Justin Jefferson Should the Steelers have any level of interest in trading Watt, there are quite a few teams around the NFL who would love to have a chance to acquire him. He is coming off of a 2024 season that saw him rack up 61 tackles, 11.5 sacks, six forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and four defended passes. Pittsburgh has gone all-in on competing for a Super Bowl this season. Without Watt, those chances would drop. If the Steelers can agree to a deal with him, Watt will be a huge part of their goal in 2025 and for years to come. Expect to continue hearing updates and rumors about the situation in the coming days. Watt's future is still very much in flux. For more Pittsburgh Steelers and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.
