Yash Chopra asked Mumtaz to marry him ‘1000 times', but she friend-zoned him: ‘Aye moti, I love you yaar, marry me'
In an interview with journalist Vickey Lalwani, she was asked if the reports of Yash Chopra pursuing her were true. She said, 'Not once, he must've asked me 1000 times. But I was not in love with him, so how could I have married him? I'm exaggerating about 1000 times, but he told me several occasions, 'Aye moti, I love you yaar, marry me'. But, you see, to have such a close relationship with anybody, you have to fall in love with the person. You have to be close to the person, and for that, you have to have chemistry. If you don't have the chemistry, how can you live together as a married couple? I never had that chemistry with him.'

She said that she liked him as 'a director and producer', but it never went beyond that. 'As a human being, he was one of the best people to be around. He would always make people laugh on set. I wept when he passed away. I was in London at the time. He'd called me a little while earlier and told me to watch his new film. He said to me, 'Promise you'll watch it'. I said yes. But he was gone. It was very sad, because he was a nice person.'
Through tears, Mumtaz continued, 'He was such a wonderful person. I don't know why he died so young. I don't know what illness he had. I'm sure his family must've tried their best, but they couldn't save him. His daughter-in-law Rani met me at a party, and she was telling me, 'Yash ji wanted you to visit the studio. When will you come? I'll give you a round.' I really wanted to see it, because it was his last wish. But it would be inappropriate to call and ask for a tour now.'
She said that Yash Chopra would show up at her house when she was out for work, and that her mother would say that he's a nice man. 'His wife was a nice person too. I've been to their house a few times. She entertained us very well. She was a very nice person,' Mumtaz said. She worked with Yash Chopra's brother, BR Chopra, on two films, Aadmi Aur Insaan (1969) and Hamraaz (1967). In the same interview, she admitted that she was very attracted to Rajesh Khanna and Shammi Kapoor, but she couldn't pursue relationships with them for different reasons.

Mohit Suri On The Moment He Decided To Become A Director: 'Bought DDLJ Tickets In Black…'
Mohit Suri says he was inspired by Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge to become a director. Saiyaara director Mohit Suri still remembers the moment he decided he had to be a director. It was while watching Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge at Mumbai's Gaiety Galaxy — so much so that he saw it twice, even buying a ticket in black the second time. The Yash Raj Films classic, directed by Aditya Chopra, left a mark that stayed with him. Now, years later, Mohit has come full circle with Saiyaara under the YRF banner — a film that's taken his career to a new high, even beyond the success of his earlier hits. Speaking at the CNN-News18 Townhall, Mumbai edition, Mohit Suri looked back at the moment. 'My aim in life over here is to work with some really great people, and I'm so happy I'm getting to do that. There is the money — it's superb. But, just hanging out with people. Like, I was in the 8th grade seeing Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge in the theatre, in Gaiety Galaxy. And I called my dad to see it again, and I bought a ticket in black. I saw that film and said, 'I want to be a director'. And imagine working for him [Aditya Chopra] today. That was a big moment for me. It was a fanboy moment, and I'm really grateful for that." About Saiyaara starring Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda Powered by strong word-of-mouth and immense public support, Saiyaara has outperformed expectations despite facing stiff competition from Anupam Kher's Tanvi: The Great, Sonakshi Sinha's Nikita Roy, Mahavatar Narsimha, Ajay Devgn's Son of Sardaar 2, and Triptii Dimri–Sidhant Chaturvedi's Dhadak 2. Its gripping storyline, heartfelt emotions, and soul-stirring music have kept audiences hooked. The romantic drama follows Ahaan, a daring and struggling musician, and Aneet, a fiercely devoted writer, as their love is tested by life's trials in classic Mohit Suri style. The film explores themes of grief, sacrifice, and eternal love. Written by Rohan Shankar and Sankalp Sadanah, Saiyaara also features standout performances from Geeta Agrawal Sharma, Sid Makkar, Shaad Randhawa, Rajesh Kumar, and Varun Badola, marking the first collaboration between Mohit Suri and legendary production house Yash Raj Films. Aditya Chopra Said Saiyaara Will Flop If You Make It With Established Names: Mohit Suri
Filmmaker Mohit Suri's latest release, Saiyaara, featuring debutants Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, has grossed over Rs 500 crore. Aditya Chopra advised casting newcomers. Filmmaker Mohit Suri is currently basking in the success of his latest release, Saiyaara, featuring debutants Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda. Suri, at CNN-News18's Mumbai Townhall event, said that his upcoming film Saiyaara was written keeping newcomers in mind. He revealed that it was Yash Raj Films chairman Aditya Chopra who told him that the film would flop if it were made with 'established names". 'I really had put in a lot of my voice into the film," Suri shared. 'In this atmosphere where everyone was blowing up cars, I was making this love story with new people. I put in a lot of myself in writing the film, along with my assistant. I sent the script to YRF during the December holiday weekend and I chickened out. I thought, let me give him some solution—in the sense, provide some actors and known names who would back me and make this film. I so badly wanted to make this film," he explained. The filmmaker admitted that his original vision was to work with newcomers, but market realities made him doubt the decision. 'When I wanted approval, I said okay, I have this list of actors who are willing to do this film with me. I wrote it for new people but I really want to make this film. I don't know in this market who will put in this much money to make it with new people," he continued. That's when Aditya Chopra stepped in with a bold perspective. Mohit Suri shared, 'It was Adi Sir who told me, 'Why are you making this film? My distribution and marketing team will be very happy that you are selling me this film with known faces, but I am telling you your film will flop if you make this with established names.'" According to Mohit Suri, Aditya Chopra understood the heart of Saiyaara: a coming-of-age romance that hinges on first-time love, heartbreak and the innocence through it all. 'This was a person who has made love stories and is making a film about a kid falling in love for the first time—not someone who has already seen fame. The narrative wouldn't work for people who have seen it," he asserted. Thanks to Aditya Chopra's faith, Mohit Suri stuck to his gut and cast fresh faces, ensuring Saiyaara remains true to its original essence. And the result? A film with a gross collection of over Rs 500 crore! view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Mohit Suri REACTS To Saiyaara's No-Promotion Strategy At News18 Townhall: 'Sell The Story, Not The Actors'
Mohit Suri's Saiyaara, under Yash Raj Films, took an unconventional route by not promoting it. The director finally breaks his silence on it. For Saiyaara, made under the Yash Raj Films banner, Mohit Suri and his team took a completely different promotional route — by not promoting it at all. In an age where film campaigns are relentless, the leads, Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, weren't even seen together before release. Audiences walked into theatres to discover a completely fresh pairing. Speaking at the CNN-News18 Townhall, Mumbai edition, Mohit Suri said this wasn't some calculated gimmick or marketing trick. 'Script came first before the casting happened. We didn't shoot a single day till all the songs were recorded. Even the way the film was marketed or positioned. It's about 'let's talk about the content. Let's sell the story. Let's sell, not the actors, because they were new. This wasn't a marketing strategy. It was just going back to traditional ways of how newcomer films were marketed. Let the film speak.," he said. Mohit Suri's passionate romance Saiyaara has emerged as one of the year's biggest blockbusters, turning newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda into overnight sensations. The film has maintained a remarkable box-office run, raking in over ₹300 crore in India within just three weeks. Powered by strong word-of-mouth and immense public support, Saiyaara has outperformed expectations despite facing stiff competition from Anupam Kher's Tanvi: The Great, Sonakshi Sinha's Nikita Roy, Mahavatar Narsimha, Ajay Devgn's Son of Sardaar 2, and Triptii Dimri–Sidhant Chaturvedi's Dhadak 2.
