Kian's Bizarre B&B
Netflix
The nine-episode South Korean variety series is the brainchild of popular South Korean webtoonist-TV host Kim Hee-min. Better known by his pen name Kian84, he designed a quirky guesthouse set on a floating barge in the ocean off Ulleungdo Island, a popular holiday destination in South Korea.
Together with boy band BTS' Jin and South Korean actress Ji Ye-eun, the trio host holidaymakers in a space where guests have to climb a rock wall to enter and go down a slide to exit.
Sleeping arrangements are bunk beds suspended on the external walls, where guests must brave the elements. The dining area is on a lower level accessible only via a fireman's pole and guests are asked to eat with their hands to be 'one with the food'.
While the series lives up to its 'bizarre' title, it should also be called The Jin Show as the K-pop global star is the anchor of the show. Not only does he cook and clean, but he is also the voice of reason in chaotic situations. His disarming appeal and natural comic timing keep the otherwise ridiculous show afloat.
Kian's Bizarre B&B is one of Netflix's global top 10 non-English shows since its premiere on April 8. The trio have since teased their return with a second season.

The Accountant 2 (NC16)

(From left) Jon Bernthal and Ben Affleck in The Accountant 2.
PHOTO: WBEI
The actioner picks up eight years after the events of The Accountant (2016) and, this time, Ben Affleck's Christian, an accountant who is autistic , is joined by brother Braxton (Jon Bernthal) to take down a criminal organisation.
The Accountant was among the first Hollywood movies to view autism as something akin to a comic-book superpower. It also showed that Christian was trained by his strict military father to suppress the 'bad' traits while letting the 'good' ones through, like his ability to memorise and regurgitate the United States tax code.
The film is fairly decent in delivering competent action and suspense, as one would expect from action film franchises such as The Equalizer (2014 to 2023) or Jack Reacher (2012 and 2016).
Perhaps realising that Affleck's character works best when placed against a foil, the story brings in Braxton early on, so the two can spend the rest of the movie swopping bro banter and working out their issues while mowing down waves of henchmen. – John Lui

Cop Kim Dami's preppy style as Yoon Ena in Nine Puzzles

Courtesy of Disney+ In crafting the zany world of South Korean mystery thriller Nine Puzzles , director Yoon Jong-bin wanted its lack of realism to come across. Whilst its plotline—surrounding the case of a serial murder mystery that picks up again 10 years later—might come across sinister, the actual tone of the drama feels novelistic. Like something that only happens in comic books. Kim Dami and Son Sukku play Yoon Ena and Kim Hansaem in Nine Puzzles. Courtesy of Disney+ To achieve this nuance, the artistic direction and overall aesthetic was carefully curated. Much attention was specifically paid to the sartorial sensibilities of its main characters, Yoon Ena and Kim Hansaem, played by Kim Dami and Son Sukku respectively. The latter, whose character is a determined detective who has yet to give up on the cold murder case from a decade back, has a defining trick: every time he removes his hat or beanie, things are about to get really serious. On the other hand, Kim's character, Ena, wears her eccentricity like a second skin. From murder suspect to brilliant criminal profiler, her meddling ways are elaborated through a deliberate wardrobe of preppy pieces, impeccable tailoring and statement accessories. Courtesy of Disney+ 'She wears the necktie very often—a very important part of her outfit—and wears a lot of colours too. It's a little cartoonish in that way,' Kim tells Vogue Singapore. True enough, a spattering of neckties fill her closet, from leather options to uniquely patterned ones. Throughout the 11-episode narrative, she wears a range of outerwear, from preppy jackets to glossy bombers and strongly-shouldered plaid coats. Yet it's her flawless colour coordination that really gives Ena her sartorial flair; often mixing soft shades of blue with burgundy or bright reds. The use of reds especially, keeps suspense going through the episodes—her beloved crimson luggage becoming a key turning point in the midst of the puzzle-filled mystery. Yet of course, the one thing that bridges Kim with Ena is their shared love for Bottega Veneta. For how often the former has been seen in the front rows of the maison's shows, she certainly brought her sartorial inclinations into Ena's world: her trusty Cassette a mainstay throughout the show. Gossip mill: Liu Wai Hung to open entertainment complex in Malaysia, officials indicted in late Lee Sun-kyun case, Hong Kong actor with cancer performs to pay bills

Liu Wai Hung to open entertainment complex in Malaysia Hong Kong former actor Liu Wai Hung plans to open an entertainment complex in Malaysia, uniting eateries, karaoke and more under one roof. The 67-year-old, who shot to fame for playing a mainland Chinese immigrant named Ah Chan in the 1979 TVB series The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, left showbiz in the '90s to pivot to running food and agriculture businesses. In a series of recent YouTube videos, Wai Hung announced his upcoming plans to open a food and entertainment complex in Kuala Lumpur spanning 15,000 sqft over four storeys. "There will be a Chinese restaurant on the first floor, with a total of five different VIP rooms, each equipped with karaoke," he shared. The second floor will feature a Western restaurant with a bar and a stage for live performances, while the third will consist of a private dining area with a "VVIP room" for 20 people. The fourth floor will consist of offices. [embed] Earlier this year, Wai Hung used his YouTube channel to share his health concerns, revealing that he had suffered a stroke that affected his left leg and had gout in his right. He added that he was undergoing acupuncture to treat his ailments. Officials indicted in late Lee Sun-kyun case A police officer and a prosecutor were indicted on Thursday (June 5) by the Incheon District Prosecutor's Office for revealing official secrets about the 2023 drug abuse investigation against late Korean actor Lee Sun-kyun. According to South Korean media, the police officer is a man in his 30s from the Incheon Metropolitan Police who is accused of taking photos of an investigation progress report which contained personal information about Sun-kyun and sending it to a reporter on Oct 18, 2023. The reporter, who shared the information, has also been charged with violating the South Korean Personal Information Protection Act. The prosecutor, who worked for the Incheon District Prosecutors' Office, is accused of revealing that Sun-kyun was being investigated for drug charges to another journalist, which resulted in the case being made public on Oct 19. The Parasite actor had undergone three rounds of police interrogations from October 2023 until his suicide that December aged 48. South Korean media was heavily criticised for their sensationalist reporting on Sun-kyun, and celebrities including Parasite director Bong Joon-ho called for an investigation into potential security lapses in the handling of the case. Hong Kong actor with cancer performs to pay bills [embed] Hong Kong actor Peter Pang recently performed at a nightclub in China to raise funds for his medical and daily expenses, despite having been diagnosed with stage three rectal cancer in 2023. In a video posted by the 54-year-old to Xiaohongshu on May 24, fans can be seen holding signs and light sticks outside the venue. Peter also performs Boundless Oceans, Vast Skies by the Hong Kong rock band Beyond to his eager audience. "I am grateful that I can still use this body to perform for everyone and will keep working hard," he captioned the post. Peter recently revealed in an interview with ST Headline that he was struggling financially, having to take a year off work during his recovery. He went through his savings and had to borrow a six-figure sum from friends and relatives to pay medical bills and daily expenses. "It's hard to support (the family) from my wife's salary alone, and the money I borrowed is almost gone," the father-of-three said. "Even if people understand my situation and no one urges me to pay back the money, I don't want to be in debt for so long." 'You worried about us too much': Tay Ying has heart-to-heart talk with mum Hong Huifang before marriage

In an Instagram Reel uploaded yesterday (June 5), local actresses Hong Huifang and Tay Ying sat down together to have a heartfelt talk about their relationship as mother and daughter. It's just in time before Tay Ying's wedding to celebrity chef Wu Sihan, which will be happening this month. Using a mini gacha machine to draw out questions, Huifang, 64, asked Tay Ying, 29: "What is one thing I didn't do well as a mother?" After a moment of contemplation, Tay Ying replied: "You don't love yourself enough. When we were younger, you worried about us too much — and then you forget about yourself. So I think in this season of life, it's time to love yourself more." "I think I will, because I left not too long anymore," Huifang joked, drawing a loud "Aiyoh" from Tay Ying. Huifang and her actor husband Zheng Geping, 61, also have son Calvert, 25, who's a singer-actor. When asked to share their proudest moments of one another, Tay Ying talked about her mother starring in Singaporean-South Korean film Ajoomma (2022). It was when Huifang attended a gala screening and many people in the showbiz industry gathered around her in applause. "In that moment I also felt so proud of myself," Huifang reminisced. Her proudest moment of Tay Ying is knowing that she's about to get married. She said fondly: "I'm so happy you finally found the man of your dreams." This left Tay Ying sighing: "Done so many good things in my life as a daughter but this is the only one." Huifang added: "This is your happiness. It's most important. I spent the first half of my life taking care of you and now someone else is taking care of you in my second half." Thereafter, Tay Ying asked Huifang: "Is there ever a moment where you wanted to leave your relationship?" Huifang incredulously said: "No." Advising the soon-to-be wife on maintaining a relationship, she said: "Both parties grew up in different environments — his and your habits are bound to be different, and so will your tempers. If you plant a tree, you must water it. You can't leave it there. Otherwise, it'll die. So you have to manage [your relationship] for it to last long." She also revealed when she found that she and Geping's spark has gone out, she suggested they go "find some spark", such as going on vacation together. Tay Ying also asked Huifang on what her biggest fight with Geping was, which happened to revolve around teenage Tay Ying. Mum explained: "Papa spoiled you a lot, and I wanted to beat you because you did something wrong. I didn't in the end, even though I wanted to — I couldn't bear to do it." Huifang is starring in the upcoming film A Good Child, which stars Richie Koh and Cheryl Chou. Tay Ying has been nominated for Star Awards 2025 in two categories: Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes and BYD Favourite Female Character. [[nid:718802]]
