A seagull eyeing your lunch or ice cream is unlikely to try to steal it if not part of a flock, scientists have found.
Due to an instinct known as neophobia, which means a fear of the unknown, scientists have discovered that herring gulls are mostly reluctant to attack when on their own.
But, according to researchers at Ghent University, this fear diminishes when seagulls are part of a flock – potentially putting your food at greater risk.
In a study published in the Royal Society Open Science journal, scientists carried out experiments involving a group of 54 seagulls they had reared from hatching.
In order to gauge how quickly the gulls would take to approach their food if faced with an unfamiliar object nearby, the scientists placed a range of items – a multicoloured ball, a bucket, brush, folder and jerrycan – next to the gulls' food supply. Some of these objects were familiar to the birds and others were new to them.
They found that, when alone, the gulls took an average of 9.81 seconds to approach their food bowl when faced with an unfamiliar object – compared with just 3.52 seconds when in a group.
Notably, 24 of the gulls did not eat at all when alone and faced with an unfamiliar object.
The scientists also found that the birds were willing to spend more time near their food when in a group than those on their own. Lone gulls spent an average of just 38.8 seconds near their food, compared with 111.8 seconds when in a group – while 16 birds did not approach their food at all.
The study states: 'Individuals tested in groups were quicker to eat and spent more time near a novel object than individuals tested alone.
'The results of our study suggest that the presence of group members reduces perceived individual risk, allowing individuals to behave less cautiously.'
Noting that 'each bird likely perceives the risk to be shared by the group', the authors said their findings were consistent with previous studies showing that social animals often rely on the presence of the group to make quicker decisions and engage in potentially risky situations.
An accompanying release from the Royal Society added: 'When confronted by a gull after your chips it might be best to catch them one-on-one.'
While there may be some comfort in the findings that a lone seagull could pose less of a threat of theft, a previous study has suggested that gulls actually prefer food that they have seen being handled by humans, as opposed to food left lying unattended.
Although in a further possible line of defence, an earlier study suggested that staring at a seagull could help to deter it from trying to take your food.
Scientists at the University of Exeter found that gulls took an average of 21 seconds longer to approach a bag of chips if they could see they were being watched, with just 27 out of 74 birds observed being too cautious to take a chip when a human was nearby.

Intrinsic capacity is the sum of a person's mental and physical capacities, and is a measure of aging. Maintaining physical and mental function is a cornerstone of healthy aging. Formerly, assessing intrinsic capacity has been a costly and time-consuming process. Now, researchers have developed a method for assessing intrinsic capacity and age-related decline from a single drop of blood or saliva. They suggest that their test could be used to track aging and guide targeted interventions to maintain mental and physical function as people age. Intrinsic capacity (IC) is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as 'all the physical and mental capacities that a person can draw on and includes their ability to walk, think, see, hear and remember.' A person's intrinsic capacity is influenced by a number of factors, including the presence of diseases, injuries and age-related changes. Maintaining your intrinsic capacity is key to healthy aging. However, measuring intrinsic capacity has, until now, required sophisticated equipment and trained personnel. A new study has found that measuring DNA methylation in blood samples to assess intrinsic capacity effectively predicts all-cause mortality. The study, which is published in Nature Aging , suggests that the IC clock could be a useful tool for tracking aging and guiding targeted interventions to maintain function in older age. Thomas M. Holland, MD, MS, a physician-scientist and assistant professor at the RUSH Institute for Healthy Aging, RUSH University, College of Health Sciences, who was not involved in this study, commented for Medical News Today that: 'A blood- or saliva-based test for intrinsic capacity, known as DNAm IC, is a very promising tool in aging science. […] This test uses DNA methylation patterns, chemical tags that regulate gene activity, to estimate your IC biologically, offering insights into how well your body is functioning compared to your chronological age.' 'One of the most critical aspects is that this test can be done with a simple blood or saliva sample, making it accessible and noninvasive. It tells us not just how old you are, but how well you are aging, which is much more meaningful to help inform which interventions should be implemented, if any, to help prevent future health problems,' Holland explained. Elena Rolt, MSc, DipION, IFMCP, a Registered Nutritional Therapist and Functional Medicine Practitioner and cofounder of Health Miro, who was not involved in this research, also welcomed the findings. 'The DNA methylation-based intrinsic capacity (DNAm IC) test shows significant potential as a practical measure of biological aging,' Rolt told MNT . 'Unlike traditional epigenetic clock based tests, it also captures functional aging more directly.' 'As it reflects immune aging, physical capacity and lifestyle-related risk factors, this test may be particularly relevant for personalised aging interventions and preventive strategies,' she added. 'However,' Rolt cautioned, 'its use should be complementary to other markers — e.g. PhenoAge, GrimAge, functional tests — and its utility in clinical practice will depend on further validation.' Using data from 1,014 people from the INSPIRE-T cohort, aged between 20 and 102 years, the researchers developed an IC score using five aspects of age-related decline: cognition locomotion sensory (vision and hearing) psychological vitality. From blood and saliva tests, the researchers collected data on DNA methylation — a process that activates or deactivates genes. DNA methylation changes over time because of developmental mutations and environmental factors, and abnormal methylation patterns have been linked to several diseases. They used this, and the age-related decline data, to construct an epigenetic predictor of IC (an 'IC clock,' or DNAm IC), then evaluated associations between the IC clock and mortality. The researchers found that DNAm IC was strongly associated with overall health. People with the highest DNAm IC had better lung function, faster walking speed, greater bone mineral density and were more likely to view themselves as healthy. And people with a high DNAm IC lived, on average, 5.5 years longer than those with a low DNAm IC. Holland told us this was a very significant finding: 'Scientifically, this reflects strong associations between high IC and better immune function, lower chronic inflammation, and reduced risk for diseases like hypertension, heart failure, stroke, and other age-related conditions.' 'Simply,' he added, 'if your body is functioning well internally you are more likely to live longer and stay healthier. This test doesn't just give a snapshot of your current state; it may also offer a glimpse into your future health.' In everyone, intrinsic capacity declines with age, but there are measures that can help to slow that decline. This study found that people with a high dietary intake of oily fish, and sugar intake that was within recommended guidelines (no more than 5% of total energy intake), were more likely to have a high DNAm IC. Tunç Tiryaki, board-certified plastic surgeon and founder of the London Regenerative Institute, who was not involved in the recent study, explained the association: 'Oily fish are rich in long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA), which have anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective and mitochondrial-supportive properties. These mechanisms are closely aligned with domains of IC such as vitality and cognitive function. Omega-3s also modulate gene expression related to immune responses and cellular senescence, pathways shown to be enriched in the DNAm IC signature.' 'Conversely, excessive sugar intake is known to accelerate glycation, oxidative stress, insulin resistance and chronic inflammation, all of which impair IC,' Tiryaki told MNT . 'Staying within recommended sugar limits likely supports metabolic flexibility and reduces inflammatory burden, preserving cognitive and physical function. These dietary factors likely influence DNAm IC by modulating epigenetic regulation and immune aging, thus helping maintain functional capacity,' he detailed. Holland, Tiryaki, and Rolt recommended a number of measures to help ensure healthy aging. These include: following a healthy diet, such as the MIND or Mediterranean diet, that is rich in fresh fruit and vegetables, wholegrains, and healthy fats, such as those found in nuts, olive oil and oily fish regular physical activity, including aerobic activity, strength training and balance exercises; Tiryaki emphasized that physical activity 'supports locomotion and vitality and influences mitochondrial function and immune health, both of which are linked to IC' cognitive and social engagement — keeping your brain stimulated and maintaining social networks are both associated with healthier aging. ensuring that you manage stress and any chronic diseases. Holland told us that the DNAm clock was a major advance in functional aging science: 'It links molecular biology with real-world outcomes like mobility, cognition and lifespan. While further validation is needed, especially in older adults with low IC, this study lays the groundwork for using personalised epigenetic markers to guide interventions in preventive geriatrics, longevity medicine and precision public health.' Anxiously checking in the mirror for signs of male pattern baldness may be a thing of the past, as scientists in Madrid believe they have found a way to reverse hair loss. Researchers at the San Carlos clinic in the Spanish capital claim they were able to regrow hair on mice in almost all cases during an experimental stem cell treatment study. The project involved giving male and female mice dihydrotestosterone, a by-product of testosterone that causes receding hair lines in men and thinning hair in women. Once the rodents had lost all their fur, half of them were injected with stem cells taken from body fat as well as a chemical called adenosine triphosphate, which stimulates cellular growth. The other half were given a placebo. All the male mice given the stem cell-chemical cocktail experienced hair regrowth, with around half getting back all their fur. The majority of the female mice also regrew their coats. 'Hair grew back in all of the treated male mice. In the case of the females, a lower dose was used, and the results were also somewhat worse, although still good, because 90 per cent managed to repopulate their hair,' Dr Eduardo López Bran, head of dermatology at the San Carlos, explained. Four or five years to treatment The scientists, whose work was published in Stem Cell Research & Therapy, say that it will still be four or five years before a drug could be available, and that the next phase of testing will involve using human patients. Hair loss or alopecia is a common complaint in Spain, which has the highest percentage of bald men in the world at 44.5 per cent, according to a survey by Medihair, an online platform for hair loss treatments. Dr López Bran said he had 'noticed a huge increase in inquiries seeking a solution, a truly significant growth in demand, especially among young people who, at the first signs of baldness, want to slow its progression, or even reverse those initial symptoms'. By the age of 50, roughly 50 per cent of men will experience some form of male pattern baldness. Around 25 per cent of will spot signs of thinning or receding as early as 21. Hair transplant surgery has become increasingly popular over the last two decades, with the number of procedures performed globally rising by 76 per cent since 2006.

One of the world's most active volcanoes, Kilauea on Hawaii's Big Island, began spewing lava from the north vent Wednesday, the latest event in an ongoing eruption that began almost six months ago. Lava fountains reached heights of more than 330 feet (100 meters) and feeding multiple lava streams. Scientists with the U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said the fountains were likely to go higher. The latest event was preceded by gas-pistoning, in which gas accumulates at a lava column's top within a vent, on Tuesday. The observatory said this process causes the lava surface to rise or piston. 'Eventually, gas escapes as splatter/lava is erupted, and lave drains back into the vent,' the observatory wrote on its Facebook page. These were occurring up to 10 times an hour, but increased in intensity until a small, sustained dome fountain began to feed flows to the crater floor a day later. It is the 25th eruptive episode since the volcano on the southeastern part of the island began erupting Dec. 23. It has been pausing and resuming since. Most of the eruptive episodes have spewed lava for about a day or less, with pauses between them generally lasting a few days.
