SEPANG - As tensions in Iran escalated following Israel's retaliatory strikes, residents in the country were forced to rely on the old-school Short Message Service (SMS) to stay in touch with family members and relevant parties.
Malaysia's Ambassador to Iran, Khairi Omar, said roaming services in the country, including WhatsApp, are currently blocked. A group of 24 individuals, including 17 Malaysians, safely touched down at KLIA Terminal 1 after being evacuated from Iran amidst escalating conflict. - Bernama photo
"In Iran, SMS communication is still open between local Iranian numbers. Domestically, people can still stay in touch. However, if we try to call an Iranian number from here, it won't go through, as roaming services have been shut down. But calls from Iran to outside the country are still possible. So, we've resorted to the old-fashioned way, text messages, which not many people use anymore.
"WhatsApp messages and similar platforms were completely inaccessible, though I believe some access is gradually returning, but still tightly controlled to ensure that sensitive information related to security issues isn't leaked,' he spoke to reporters last night.
He arrived from Iran with a group of 24 individuals, comprising 17 Malaysians, six Iranian dependents of Malaysian citizens, and one Singaporean.
Khairi said the situation in Iran was volatile, with both foreign nationals and locals equally shocked by the severity of the attack, which he described as drastic.
"After a day or two, we began to observe a pattern in the attacks. They were more intense at night, while during the day, it seemed as though both sides had come to a mutual understanding to scale back the assaults.
"As we all know, they already identified the targets, and if one side launched a strike on certain facilities, the other side would respond. But we were always on high alert because if you're in the wrong place at the wrong time, you could easily find yourself in a situation you definitely wouldn't want to be in,' he said.
The government ordered the temporary closure of the Malaysian Embassy in Iran, instructing all embassy personnel in the country to return home immediately.
Meanwhile, a trader, Fadhil Yusni, 33, expressed his gratitude at being reunited with his wife, Zainab Ganood, an Iranian national who was visiting her parents.
"I panicked because I couldn't reach my wife. Alhamdulillah, tonight I feel grateful. Thank you to the government and the Foreign Ministry for evacuating my wife out of Iran,' he said, adding that he is now finding the best way to help his wife's family leave the conflict-stricken country safely.
Tensions erupted on June 13 when Israel launched airstrikes on several locations across Iran, including military and nuclear facilities, prompting Tehran to retaliate. - BERNAMA

Govt, opposition close ranks over assault on Rafizi's son
KUALA LUMPUR: Members of parliament from both sides of the divide today expressed solidarity in condemning the attack on the son of former economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli at a shopping mall in Putrajaya yesterday. Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun (PH–Port Dickson), speaking at a press conference in Parliament, described the incident as an act of violence that went beyond the bounds of humanity. The Negri Sembilan menteri besar said that, in a democratic country, differences of opinion should never be resolved through threats or violence, especially when children are involved. "We fully support Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's statement that the law must be upheld without compromise. "No one should escape firm action if proven to be involved," he said. Present were other government MPs, including Subang MP Wong Chen, P. Prabakaran (Batu), Tan Kar Hing (Gopeng), Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh (Ledang), Dr Taufiq Johari (Sungai Petani), Datuk Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik (Balik Pulau) and Hassan Abdul Karim (Pasir Gudang). At the same time, the opposition bloc, in a separate press conference, also condemned the attack. Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin (PN–Larut) said the opposition also stood behind Rafizi and his family. "I wish to make it clear that opposition MPs will stand together on this matter to ensure not only that Rafizi, but also his family, are safe and that such incidents do not recur," he said. Among opposition MPs present were Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (Masjid Tanah), Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (Kota Bharu), Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah (Indera Mahkota), Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee (Beluran) and Wan Ahmad Fayshal Wan Ahmad Kamal (Machang). Yesterday, Rafizi confirmed that his son was attacked and injected with a syringe at a shopping mall in Putrajaya. The Pandan MP added that checks revealed that two men on a motorcycle had been following his wife's car prior to the attack. Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said authorities are tracking down the two individuals. Shazeli added that actions have been taken, including obtaining and reviewing closed-circuit television footage from the scene. Rafizi today also revealed that his wife received two threatening messages via WhatsApp, the first at 1.12am and the second at 11.02am. He believed that the attack on his son may be linked to a meeting he had last week with a group of whistleblowers regarding a scandal. However, he declined to disclose details of the scandal.

Upko urges stern, proactive actions after Zara Qairina case
Published on: Thursday, August 14, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 14, 2025 Text Size: Upko deputy president Datuk Donald Peter Mojuntin ( pic ) has urged for stern and proactive actions to tackle school bullying and strengthen procedures in suspicious death cases, following the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir. He said rising bullying incidents in schools, including cyberbullying, have become a serious concern, with official data showing more than 11,500 students involved as of October this year. Donald stressed that bullying causes lasting harm, including depression, anxiety, and a higher risk of suicidal behaviour, and called for collective action from families, schools, communities, and government agencies, supported by existing programmes like the Education Ministry's BEST initiative. He also emphasised the importance of mandatory post-mortems in sudden or suspicious deaths under Sections 329 and 331 of the Criminal Procedure Code, saying these are key to uncovering the truth and ensuring justice. Donald welcomed the Attorney-General's Chambers' decision to hold a full inquest into Zara's death, expressing hope it would provide her family with clarity and peace of mind while serving as a turning point in addressing both bullying and investigative procedures. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
