Upko urges stern, proactive actions after Zara Qairina case
Published on: Thu, Aug 14, 2025 Text Size: Upko deputy president Datuk Donald Peter Mojuntin ( pic ) has urged for stern and proactive actions to tackle school bullying and strengthen procedures in suspicious death cases, following the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir. He said rising bullying incidents in schools, including cyberbullying, have become a serious concern, with official data showing more than 11,500 students involved as of October this year. Donald stressed that bullying causes lasting harm, including depression, anxiety, and a higher risk of suicidal behaviour, and called for collective action from families, schools, communities, and government agencies, supported by existing programmes like the Education Ministry's BEST initiative. He also emphasised the importance of mandatory post-mortems in sudden or suspicious deaths under Sections 329 and 331 of the Criminal Procedure Code, saying these are key to uncovering the truth and ensuring justice. Donald welcomed the Attorney-General's Chambers' decision to hold a full inquest into Zara's death, expressing hope it would provide her family with clarity and peace of mind while serving as a turning point in addressing both bullying and investigative procedures. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Azizah calls for detailed review of juvenile offence penalties
Published on: Friday, August 15, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 15, 2025 By: Noor Zafira Zayn Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: The proposal to review penalties for juvenile offenders should be examined in greater detail, said Sabah Institute for Development Studies (IDS) chairperson Datuk Seri Azizah Mohd Dun ( pic ). She said any legal amendments must be considered carefully, noting that such decisions should be based on a thorough investigation rather than a single case. Azizah was responding to a recent suggestion by the Sabah Consumers Affairs and Protection Society (Caps) to lower the age limit for juvenile offenders from 18 to under 15 in view of the rise in youth-related crime. She stressed that a comprehensive study involving experts and multiple stakeholders is needed to develop the most effective approach in addressing juvenile offences, including bullying in schools, workplaces, and within families. Azizah added that tackling such issues requires collective responsibility from parents, communities, and authorities, with a strong focus on prevention through understanding current trends and potential risks. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? GRS Women stand firm on PH alliance for Sabah polls
Published on: Friday, August 15, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 15, 2025 By: Noor Zafira Zayn Text Size: Azizah with other GRS Women members. KOTA KINABALU: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Women's chief Datuk Seri Azizah Mohd Dun says the wing remains committed to the leadership's decision on working with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the upcoming 17th State Election. She said the announcement by the state leadership clearly outlined GRS's stance, and the women's wing will follow the party's direction in forging the partnership. Azizah stressed that any later statements suggesting other alliances would not change their focus, as they will only adhere to what has been set by the party leadership. She added that GRS Women will defend the coalition's current seats and hopes existing women leaders will be retained. Prime Minister and PH Chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim earlier confirmed discussions with Barisan Nasional (BN) and GRS to avoid clashes in the state polls, aiming for an understanding that supports stability and progress for Sabah in line with the Federal Government's leadership. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Government enforces Penal Code amendments to combat bullying in Malaysia
PUTRAJAYA: The government is coordinating the enforcement of Sections 507B to 507G of the Penal Code to reinforce that bullying is a criminal offence. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil stated this was a key discussion during today's Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The move follows recent bullying cases, including the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir. Fahmi quoted the Prime Minister as saying, 'The government will not tolerate bullying in any form or allow such cases to continue without accountability.' Ministries overseeing education and student dormitories are aligning efforts to implement the amended provisions, effective since July. Fahmi emphasised, 'We want every ministry to fully understand that under these amendments, bullying is clearly defined and legally recognised as a criminal act.' He spoke after attending the 20th Majlis Amanat Perdana Perkhidmatan Awam (MAPPA XX), which gathered over 30,000 civil servants in person and online. The Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code amendments, passed in December 2024, target all bullying forms, including cyberbullying. Fahmi also noted the Prime Minister's concerns over disrespectful behaviour by certain individuals and public figures. Anwar reportedly warned that authorities would take action against such conduct. During MAPPA XX, the Prime Minister highlighted civil servants' role in maintaining peace and national progress. Fahmi said, 'The Prime Minister delivered several important messages, including how much of the progress we're enjoying today is the result of bold changes and reforms.' He welcomed Anwar's announcements on public service improvements, calling them a relief. Fahmi added, 'More major announcements for civil servants are expected, Insya-Allah, during the tabling of Budget 2026 on Oct 10.' - Bernama
