Leicester strike late after resistance of beleaguered Sheff Wed players and fans

Wednesday fans made their feelings known to Chansiri by delaying their entry to their seats and the away end was visibly empty as the players came onto the pitch at the King Power Stadium, with a banner that read 'SWFC for sale – enough is enough'.
The Owls had just 15 senior players on the books ahead of their season-opener but produced a determined display against the Foxes.

After five minutes, the fans made their way into the ground and were greeted with applause from the Leicester fans.
For Wednesday, it was an achievement of its own to be on the pitch for the first game but they stunned the King Power into silence when Nathaniel Chalobah gave the visitors a shock lead midway through the first half, and it was thoroughly deserved.
Wednesday's resilience was broken when Jannik Vestergaard equalised early in the second period and, if Wednesday already did not have a mountain to climb, captain Barry Bannan was sent off with 14 minutes to play.
Leicester, who started a new era after relegation from the Premier League under new boss Marti Cifuentes, left it late to grab the winner through Faes and were reminded that life back in the Championship may not be as plain sailing as the last time they were in the second tier.
A spirited Wednesday side almost grabbed an early opener, Chalobah driving forward with the ball an unleashing an effort which needed to be tipped onto the post by Jakub Stolarczyk.

Pierce Charles was brought into action with three routine saves in first 15 minutes but the hosts came closest when Bilal El Khannouss' effort from distance was marginally dragged wide.
Against the script, an already emotional away end erupted in the 26th minute.
Yan Valery cut the ball back to Chalobah on the edge of the box and he sent a strike towards goal which deflected off Oliver Skipp and into the net.
Leicester should have been on level terms three minutes before the break – a corner whipped towards the back post was headed back across goal by Caleb Okoli but Vestergaaard headed wide.
Leicester wanted a penalty at end of the half when El Khannous' strike seemingly hit the arm of Bannan as boos rang around the stadium at the break.

The Foxes put Wednesday under the pump at the beginning of the second period as the visitors could not get out of their own half and the pressure paid.
El Khannouss' low delivery from a free-kick evaded everyone inside the box and Vestergaard pounced to finish high into the net.
Valery and Chalobah both went off injured and Wednesday's task was made harder when Bannan was given his marching orders for a second booking for a late challenge on Harry Winks.
Leicester finally found the winner three minutes from time.
Charles was in inspired form and he denied a Patson Daka header from point blank range but there was nothing he could do from the resulting corner when El Khannouss whipped a corner onto the head of Faes, who guided home.

Alexander Isak's 'juicy' Man Utd offer and Pep Guardiola intervention to seal £51m deal

Alexandar Isak's relationship with Newcastle has soured as he pushes for a move away, but his fate could have been different had he opted to snub the Magpies for other Premier League sides Alexander Isak and Newcastle United have reached a bitter stalemate as the star striker pushes for an exit. But the Swede's career could have panned out differently if he had left former employers Real Sociedad for another Premier League heavyweight three years ago. ‌ The 25-year-old made his feelings known last month when he told the Magpies he wanted to leave, and after Liverpool saw a £110million bid rejected for him, neither party has budged. Eddie Howe's side remain adamant he is not for sale and will don a Newcastle shirt this season, while the player is said to be refusing to play for the club again. ‌ Since arriving in 2022, Isak has taken the top-flight by storm, improving on his debut league goal tally of 10 with 21 two seasons ago and 23 last time out. It is no surprise that a club like the reigning champion Reds have turned his head, but he has held admirers in England since his days in Spain. Mirror Football takes a look at all those interested in Isak before his St. James' Park switch and why a deal never happened... ‌ Manchester City's Erling Haaland preference Having caught Borussia Dortmund's eye whilst playing in his native Sweden, Isak signed for the German side but left for Spain in 2019 after finding minutes hard to come by. With Sociedad, he became one of La Liga's most revered strikers, leaving many top sides vying for his signature. One of those interested parties was Pep Guardiola's Manchester City. Speaking in 2024, years after Isak made his Newcastle switch, Guardiola admitted: "At Real Sociedad, we started to follow him, we were impressed. He was a target. With his skills, all the clubs around the world take a look. I think he adapted really, really well in the Premier League." City's reason for not pursuing Isak more vigorously? Erling Haaland. The Athletic reported in the summer of 2022 that the Norwegian was Guardiola's priority No. 1, ahead of Isak, and Haaland's arrival even persuaded him to pen a new contract with the club. The Spaniard got his way as Haaland's £51m Dortmund release clause was met that July, and he has become a two-time Premier League Golden Boot winner, scoring 85 league goals since 2022, to the 54 of Isak, who arrived in England a few months after him. Manchester United's 'juicy' Alexander Isak offer City were reportedly not the only club in Manchester to admire Isak, as rivals Manchester United were claimed to have submitted a 'juicy offer' to the Swede that summer. ‌ Mundo Deportivo reported that before Isak completed his £63m move to Newcastle, the Red Devils, then led by Erik ten Hag, were in touch with his representatives, who persuaded the striker to decline their advances. Sociedad never received a bid from United for Isak, and having lost out on his signature, Ten Hag began his first season in charge with Cristiano Ronaldo leading the line, though that infamously only lasted until November. Arsenal's £75m 'overpriced' release clause regret Arsenal were yet another club that had Isak on their radar before he signed for the Magpies, and they perhaps came the closest to securing his signature with an informal offer. ‌ The Gunners sought to replace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang up front and saw Isak as the ideal recruit. However, when approaching him in January 2022, they encountered some discrepancies regarding the Swede's price tag. Mikel Arteta's side tabled an informal £56m offer, which was far lower than Sociedad's estimations, as they were sticking to Isak's £74.7m release clause. The Athletic reported that this fee was just too much for Arsenal, who saw him as 'overpriced,' and Isak ended up at St. James' Park the following summer while continuing to be monitored by the Gunners. A fee of £75m would now be considered a bargain for Isak, who, after Liverpool's £120m bid was rejected, is thought to be valued at a potential British record transfer sum of £150m by Newcastle. Marcus Rashford says Man Utd ‘in no man's land' as transition ‘has not started'

Rashford, 27, left his boyhood club for a season-long loan at Barcelona last month, having finished the previous season with Aston Villa after falling out of favour following Amorim's arrival and a December interview in which the England international said he was seeking a 'new challenge'. United laboured to a 15th-placed finish under the Portuguese head coach last term, their lowest-ever finish in the Premier League era, but Rashford said the club's problems run much deeper as they have tried six different permanent managers, each with a different approach, since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Rashford said: 'We have been way below where we deem United to be but then if you take a step back, which I've been able to do, especially over these last six months, what do you expect? 🚨 Rashford Ep is Now LIVE! 🚨 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 The 2nd English Player At Barca👏 Getting Back To His Best 🤔 What Does Success Look Like?@GaryLineker & @MicahRichards is joined by @MarcusRashford in this exclusive interview ahead of his new season at Barcelona in the latest show below 👇 — The Rest Is Football (@RestIsFootball) August 13, 2025 'People say that we've been in a transition for years but to be in a transition you have to start a transition. The actual transition has not started yet. 'When Liverpool went through this, they got (Jurgen) Klopp, they stuck with him. They didn't win in the beginning. People only remember his final few years when he was competing with (Manchester) City and winning the biggest trophies. 'To start a transition, you have to make a plan and stick to it. It's not easy to do. But this is where I speak about being realistic with what your situation is. We've had that many different managers, different ideas and different strategies to win that you end up in no man's land.' Since Sir Jim Ratcliffe bought a minority share in the club in late 2023, his Ineos group has taken control of football operations and sought to implement a clearer plan. This summer they have spent more than £200million to bring in forwards Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko. But Rashford said United have forgotten the principles instilled by Ferguson, who won 13 Premier League titles, two Champions Leagues, five FA Cups and four League Cups during a 26-year reign at Old Trafford. 'When Ferguson was in charge, not only were there principles for the first team but they were for the whole academy,' Rashford said. 'So you could pick players from 15 years, a full generation, and they'd all understand the principles of playing the Manchester United way. 'Any team that has been successful over a period of time, they have principles that mean that any coach or player that comes in has to align to or add to the principles. 'At times, United were hungry to win… but it was reactionary. If your direction is always changing, you can't expect to win the league.' Rashford made 426 appearances for United, scoring 138 goals and providing 42 assists, but appears to have played his last game for the club, with Barcelona's loan deal including an option to buy which reportedly stands at 35 million euros.
