UP government announces 20% quota for ex-agniveers in police, fire services
In a major policy move aimed at boosting post-service employment prospects for Agniveers, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced a 20% reservation for former Agnipath recruits in state police and fire department jobs.The announcement was made following a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Finance Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna, addressing the media, stated that the reservation would apply to direct recruitment in four categories: police constable, PAC constable, mounted police, and fireman.advertisementImportantly, the reservation will be horizontal, meaning it will cut across all social categories—General, SC, ST, and OBC. For example, an ex-Agniveer belonging to the SC category will be eligible for the quota within that category.
Additionally, the state will offer a relaxation of the upper age limit of up to three years for former Agniveers applying for these posts. The first eligible batch under this reservation system is expected to be recruited in 2026.Highlighting the broader context, Khanna noted that several states, including Haryana and Odisha, have already extended similar benefits, albeit at 10%. "By offering 20% reservation, UP is taking a significant step forward in recognising the service of Agniveers and integrating them into state-level security roles," he added.Launched in 2022, the Agnipath scheme is a central government initiative for short-term military recruitment in the Army, Navy, and Air Force, with a four-year service period. New Delhi: Gangsters Lawrence Bishnoi and Goldy Brar - in whose alliance a rift had been brewing for some time - have now 'split up', sources have told NDTV, acknowledging that this will make it more difficult for police and intelligence agencies to bust their respective criminal networks. Sources said the information came from interrogation of Bishnoi and Brar's associates. Bishnoi is currently in Ahmedabad's Sabarmati Jail, while Goldie Brar remains a wanted man; he went to the United States in 2017 and never returned, and now runs his gang from that country. According to sources, Brar has now joined hands with Azerbaijan-based Rohit Godara, while Bishnoi has tied up with Noni Rana, also known as Surya Pratap, who operates from Canada. Senior officers from the Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Delhi police forces have met with counterparts from the National Investigation Agency to understand the impact of the 'break up'. Sources said the Bishnoi-Brar rift began with the arrest of the former's brother, Anmol Bishnoi , in California in November last year. Anmol was arrested for entering the US illegally. In March US authorities filed a request for more information - from the charges against Anmol Bishnoi to details about the evidence against him and his financial details. Sources in the intelligence community told NDTV the Bishnoi-Brar rift was because the former felt the latter, and Rohit Godara, did not help his brother in the bail bond process. Anmol Bishnoi did eventually secure bail, but was also forced to wear a GPS tracker. A furious Lawrence Bishnoi broke ties with Goldy Brar and joined hands with Noni Rana, the younger brother of notorious Haryana-based gangster Kala Rana, alias Virendra Pratap. Lawrence Bishnoi and Noni Rana have reportedly worked together over the past few months, with the latter's network making ransom and extortion calls and collecting money for the former. His Response On the murder of Moose Wala, in January Brar told British broadcaster BBC, "In his arrogance, he [Moose Wala] made some mistakes that could not be forgiven... Apart from the killing of Moose Wala and Siddique, the Bishnoi and Brar gangs have also been linked to multiple threats against Bollywood star Salman Khan, including the April 2024 incident in which gunmen opened fire at his apartment in Mumbai's Bandra area while he was inside. Air India crash: Vijay Rupani's family says 'finding it extremely difficult' to cope with his death
The family of ex-Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani, who died in the Air India plane crash last week, has expressed deep sorrow for the loss of lives in the accident. The BJP leader's family members said they are finding it "extremely difficult" to come to terms with the former's tragic death. Vijay Rupani's son, Rushabh Rupani, said this is "a sad time not just for us, but for 270 families too". "This is a sad time not just for our family but also for the other 270 families. I thank the Police, Aarogya staff, Civil Defence, Fire Services and RSS workers for their rescue efforts during this incident, which are praiseworthy. I also express gratitude to PM Modi, CM Bhupendra Patel and other leaders for supporting and standing with not just our family, but also all other families," said Rusabh. UP Police recruitments free from corruption, discrimination, says Yogi Adityanath
Chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday said the objective of the grand ceremony for distribution of appointment letters to 60,244 newly recruited police personnel in Lucknow was to ensure that every citizen and family of the state gets the benefit of participation in governance without any discrimination. The event marked the largest induction of civil police officers in the country to date. Before 2017, police recruitment in Uttar Pradesh was marred by nepotism and corruption—jobs were nearly impossible to secure without money or recommendations, the chief minister said, adding that era is over. 'We followed merit and transparency, respecting constitutional reservations,' he said, adding that no discrimination occurred based on caste, religion, class or region. 'The new Uttar Pradesh awards every youth justice through merit,' he said. 'The more you sweat during uniform training, the less blood will be shed in life,' Adityanath declared at the grand police recruitment ceremony held at the Defence Expo Ground. He emphasised that the exemplary performance of the police force during Maha Kumbh earned widespread praise. 'If we can perform there, we can perform anywhere,' he added, highlighting how the police today stood for both law enforcement and social trust. He applauded this recruitment drive as a pioneering step toward realizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah's 'Smart Policing' vision, marking it as a historic advancement. While the political nuances of Amit Shah's visit cannot be overlooked as panchayat polls are due in the state early next year, the event is also significant as it shows the government's commitment to creating job opportunities for youngsters. Yogi Adityanath highlighted the state's record of creating over 850,000 government jobs in eight years, including approximately 125,000 police recruitments. He stated that these efforts not only boost numbers but also reflect the government's dedication to maintaining peace, security, and investment in the state. 'The double-engine government has set a benchmark for clean and transparent recruitment processes,' he said, noting that even youths from the poorest families now serve as police personnel. Smart policing He expressed gratitude to Shah for helping with paramilitary and military training resources when recruitment began in 2017. As a result, the state now has the capacity to train over 60,000 police officers locally. He also emphasised forensic upgrades: eight new forensic laboratories are already operational, with six more under construction. Each of the 75 districts now has two mobile forensic vans. Additionally, cyber units have been established in all 75 districts, and cyber help desks in 1,994 police stations—aligning with new criminal laws effective July 2024 (Indian Justice Code 2023, Civil Security Code 2023, and Evidence Act 2023). Yogi's advice Chief minister Yogi Adityanath urged the new recruits to be friendly, sensitive, and solution-oriented, offering his congratulations to them and their families. He expressed confidence that they would serve the state excellently. Sunday's dawn brought new hope and fulfilment to more than 60,244 youths as they received their appointment letters at the grand 'Rozgaar Ke Mahakumbh,' he emphasised. Candidates expressed gratitude to the state government for ensuring excellent arrangements even in challenging weather conditions. Each candidate was seated in the block designated for their division alongside officials from their respective districts, where they were ceremoniously handed their appointment letters. Earlier, deputy chief ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak addressed the gathering while director general of police (DGP), Rajeev Krishna delivered the welcome speech at the start of the event.
