REVIEW: Happy Gilmore 2 isn't just bad, it is one of Adam Sandler's worst movies. And that's saying something
The long awaited Netflix follow-up to Adam Sandler's 1996 cult classic is so bad that its two-hour runtime feels twice that length, and one wonders how it can be classified as a comedy because it's about as funny as gingivitis, which, incidentally, is one of numerous punchlines in the film that fall flat.
It's actually astonishing a film with this many cameos - from famous real-life golf pros like Scottie Scheffler to Post Malone and Hollywood starlet Margaret Qualley - can be so mind-numbingly boring.
And this critic says that as an unashamed fan of the original, and as someone who has a keen appreciation for Sandler's singular brand of everyman comedy.
Of course, as you'd expect, there's a ton of fan service here, beginning with a recap of the first film to set the scene for the sequel.
Sandler's Gilmore, the failed ice hockey player turned pro golfer, has enjoyed a ton of success since we last saw him, winning five more tour championships and fathering five children to Virginia, his love interest from the original.
But it all goes horribly wrong one day when a wayward tee shot hits Virginia in the noggin, killing her instantly.
Happy swears he'll never play golf again, and drowns his sorrows in drink, much to the dismay of his now-adult kids.
His daughter (played by Sandler's real-life daughter, Sunny) is an aspiring ballet dancer, and winning a place at an expensive dance school in Paris might just be the motivation Happy needs to get back on the golf course.
First he'll need to find his 'happy place', which has changed significantly from the first movie and now includes age-appropriate features such as positive results from cholesterol tests and time alone to watch internet videos on the toilet.
That isn't the only thing standing in the way of making his daughter's dream comes true - a rival golf tour (a lampoon of LIV that goes by the name of the MAXI Golf League) is posing an existential threat to the sport itself.
So, in case you haven't already figured it out, Happy must rediscover his love for the game, remaster his inimitable tee shots and see off the challenge from MAXI.
It results in a ridiculously convoluted plot, which tries to shoehorn legacy characters, such as Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald) and Ben Stiller's abusive retirement home orderly, into roles that make little sense.
And Bad Bunny as Happy's caddy could've been fantastic but somehow ends up lame, which pretty much sums up the whole film.
Easily one of Sandler's worst movies.

Finn Wolfhard announces details of 2025 UK and European tour
Finn Wolfhard has announced details of his 2025 UK and European tour. Titled Objection!, it is in support of the 21-year-old Stranger Things actor's debut solo album Happy Birthday. Finn, who previously fronted the bands Calpurnia and The Aubreys, released the album in June, accompanied by the nostalgic lead single Choose The Latter and the reflective track Trailers After Dark. He will kick off the Objection! tour on 4 October with a show at La Maroquinerie in Paris, before continuing through Berlin, Manchester and Dublin. The run will conclude with a headline performance at London's Electric Brixton on 16 October. Speaking to NME earlier this year, Finn reflected on the creative process behind the album and credited his Stranger Things co-stars Joe Keery and Maya Hawke as key musical influences. He said: '(Joe) was a gigantic inspiration to me and another mentor. 'While filming, Joe and Maya were part of a fun group chat challenge where they would both write and submit a song every week. 'And I still text Joe to ask him what he thinks about song ideas. I'm hoping we can make music together – even if I wasn't credited.' Joe, 32, who plays Steve Harrington in Stranger Things, performs under the moniker Djo and released his third album The Crux in 2023. Finn joined Joe on stage in Toronto earlier this year for a live performance of Flash Mountain, a track from Djo's 2019 debut album Twenty Twenty. The actor's tour news arrives alongside the continued expansion of the Stranger Things franchise. A new animated spin-off, Stranger Things: Tales From '85, is in production at Netflix. The show is being executive-produced by Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer, alongside Shawn Levy, 55, who directed Deadpool and Wolverine. No casting or plot details have yet been confirmed. In a statement to Netflix's Tudum, the Duffer brothers said: 'We've always dreamed of an animated Stranger Things in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving, and to see this dream realised has been absolutely thrilling.' They continued: 'We couldn't be more blown away by what Eric Robles and his team have come up with – the scripts and artwork are incredible, and we can't wait to share more with you! The adventure continues… .'

Cameron Boyce's mom thanks Adam Sandler for tribute
Cameron Boyce's mom has thanked Adam Sandler for paying tribute to her late son in Happy Gilmore 2. The Descendants actor - who played Adam's son in 2010's Grown Ups and 2013's sequel Grown Ups 2 - passed away in 2019 at the age of 20 following a seizure but the new golfing comedy features a scene where Cameron can be seen on TV. The brief scene shows Adam's titular character Happy checking in at a golf course, where staff are watching a TV show featuring Cameron, which fans believe to be his Disney Channel show Jessie, in which he starred as Luke Ross from 2011 to 2015. And Cameron's mom, Libby Boyce, has shared a still featuring the moment and wrote on Instagram: "Thank you @adamsandler for honoring Cam's legacy in Happy Gilmore 2 (sic)" Libby also reflected on the bond Adam and Cameron had shared and thanked the Murder Mystery actor for his ongoing support for her late son. She wrote in a separate post: "Adam and Cameron talked quite a bit in the days leading up to his death. "Cameron was supposed to be in Hubie Halloween and they were strategizing. They had a bond I think related to being authentic, funny and just keeping it real. Adam always finds a way to keep Cam's memory alive which warms our heart." While Cameron passed away before Hubie Halloween was filmed, Adam incorporated a tribute to the "talented" young star in the movie's credits. A picture of the actor was shown along with the message: "In loving memory of CAMERON BOYCE. Gone way too soon and one of the kindest, coolest, funniest, and most talented kids we knew. You live on forever in our hearts and are truly missed every day." And shortly after the news of Cameron's death was announced, the 58-year-old actor shared a heartfelt tribute. Adam wrote on social media at the time: "Too young. Too sweet. Too funny. "Just the nicest, most talented, and most decent kid around. Loved that kid. Cared so much about his family. Cared so much about the world. Thank you, Cameron, for all you gave to us. So much more was on the way. All our hearts are broken. "Thinking of your amazing family and sending our deepest condolences.' On what would have been Cameron's 21st birthday in May 2020, Adam again honoured the star. He wrote on Instagram: "Happy birthday to Cameron. Would have been 21 years old. Such a great kid. We all miss him a lot. Especially his incredible family."
