Jordan's revenues rise by $232mln as public debt drops below 91% of GDP

AMMAN — The Kingdom's domestic revenues increased by approximately JD164.7 million in the first half of 2025, reaching JD4.669 billion compared with JD4.504 billion during the same period last year. Public debt totalled around JD35.3 billion by the end of June 2025, equivalent to 90.9 per cent of GDP, down from 92.7 per cent in May, according to the Jordan news agency, Petra. This reduction followed the Ministry of Finance's repayment of USD1 billion in maturing Eurobonds in June, funded through concessional loans secured in March and April at a competitive interest rate of 4.8 per cent, Petra said. The ministry highlighted that this strategy avoided issuing new Eurobonds, which under current exceptional global and regional conditions could have carried interest rates of up to 9 per cent. © Copyright The Jordan Times. Egypt: Cabinet approves rules for committees assessing residential rental areas

Arab Finance: The Egyptian cabinet has approved the rules and regulations governing committees tasked with assessing areas containing residential rental properties under Law No. 164 of 2025, as per a statement. The draft Prime Ministerial decree defines key terms, including 'rented premises,' referring to properties leased for residential purposes under the new law, and 'conflict of interest cases,' which cover situations where committee members or their first-degree relatives are owners or tenants in the area under review or have personal interests that could affect their work. It also introduces a point-based evaluation system, classifying areas as premium with a score of over 80 points, medium with a score from 40 to 80 points, and economic areas that received a total score below 40 points. According to the resolution, governors will form one or more inventory committees led by senior officials and including technical and legal experts, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, the Egyptian General Survey Authority, and the Real Estate Tax Authority. Committees will operate daily, excluding holidays, and must record detailed minutes of their work. The committees will divide areas into the three categories based on criteria such as location, building quality, average unit size, available utilities, road and transport networks, and public services. The annual rental value of properties, as defined under the Built Property Tax Law, will also be considered. Their findings must be completed within three months of the law's effective date and published in the Egyptian Gazette. Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities Sherif El-Sherbiny announced that tenants meeting the eligibility requirements for alternative units under Article 8 of the law can apply starting October 1st via a unified electronic platform or through post offices nationwide, with applications open for three months. Applicants will be able to track their requests, complete documentation, and update information through their electronic accounts.

Returning Afghans rush for chance to work in Qatar under expanded deal

About 8,000 recently returned Afghans have rushed to apply for one of 1,800 chances to work in Qatar after the Gulf state expanded a deal with Kabul, Afghanistan's labour ministry told AFP on Thursday. More than four million Afghans have been deported or pressured to leave Iran and Pakistan since September 2023, according to the UN's International Organisation for Migration. Afghanistan is facing one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, the United Nations says. Afghans forced to leave neighbouring countries have returned to high unemployment rates and a fragile economy struggling to recover from four decades of conflict. Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs spokesman Samiullah Ibrahimi said the 8,000 applications had been received since Wednesday. He said the positions were "specifically for those who returned or were forced to leave Iran and Pakistan" in the past two years. The jobs ranged from management roles to engineering, hospitality and work as mechanics. They are an expansion of a deal announced in July to open 3,100 jobs for Afghans in Qatar, for which 15,500 applied in the hope of gaining work outside the country. Registration was open in Kabul, Herat, Kandahar and Nangarhar provinces, home to most of the country's major cities. Hopeful applicants had to provide proof they had returned to Afghanistan in the past two years, Ibrahimi said, and had to pay 100 Afghanis ($1.45) to register. Between 1.5 and 2.1 million Afghans came back this year alone, according to UN agencies, which warned the influx would exacerbate the country's endemic poverty. Afghanistan's unemployment rate of more than 13 percent affects nearly a quarter of young people aged 15 to 29, according to the World Bank. Those who do have work often support large, extended families on stretched salaries, with many Afghans relying on money sent from relatives abroad.
