Fahmi extends condolences on passing of broadcasting legend Yahya Longchik
KUALA LUMPUR: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has extended condolences to the family of the late Yahya Longchik, a former Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) radio and news presenter.
Yahya, who was a prominent radio presenter in 1966 through the programme 'This Is Your Life', died at the age of 86.
In a post on X today, Fahmi said Yahya's passing was a great loss to the nation's broadcasting industry.
'As one of the voices and faces who helped shape the TV and radio news landscape in our country through @RTM_Malaysia, the late Yahya will be remembered not only for his charismatic presenting style but also for his dedication to broadcasting quality and integrity.
'More than just a news presenter, he was a symbol of trustworthiness, credibility, and service to the people,' he said.
Fahmi also prayed for Yahya's soul to be blessed and placed among the righteous.
After retiring from RTM, Yahya joined Pos Malaysia in 1990 as Group Manager (Public Relations).

Fahmi congratulates sign language interpreter Tan Lee Bee
KUALA LUMPUR: Minister of Communications Datuk Fahmi Fadzil extended his congratulations to sign language interpreter, Tan Lee Bee, who was awarded the Bintang Ahli Mangku Negara (AMN) by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, on Monday. Bernama had earlier reported that Tan began her work as a sign language interpreter out of love for her hearing-impaired younger sibling. She learned sign language to help her sibling and also served as a teacher for 17 years for the hearing impaired. Since 1994, Tan has been the first sign language interpreter at the Federal Court of Malaysia, while her involvement in broadcasting began around 1985, through the program Selamat Pagi Malaysia on RTM, and later also became a sign language interpreter for RTM news broadcasts and official communication videos.

New MMC developments to be announced at Hawana
KUALA LUMPUR: The latest on the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) will be announced during the summit of the coming National Journalists' Day (Hawana) 2025, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil ( pic ). The Communications Minister said the MMC was set up with the clear mission of defending media freedom, ensuring fair and responsible reporting, and serving as a channel for the people to air grievances against the media in a civil manner. He said the other notable achievement was when the Dewan Rakyat passed the Malaysian Media Council Bill 2024 in February. 'After more than 50 years of discussion, our country has finally succeeded in establishing the Malaysian Media Council, a self-regulatory body that brings together all types of media, including print, broadcast and digital,' he said at the Hawana 2025-Bernama Strategic Partners' Appreciation Ceremony and Official Launch of Bernama-Motorhome at Wisma Bernama here yesterday. Fahmi said with the setting up of the MMC and other initiatives, the government was laying a strong foundation for the future of the Malaysian media. Themed 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics', Hawana 2025 will be held at WTC KL from June 13 to 15 with the highlight of the celebration to be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on June 14. More than 1,000 media practitioners, representatives of local journalist associations and media representatives from Asean member countries have been invited to bring together the professional media fraternity and industry experts while exchanging ideas and forging strategic relationships. Fahmi said the Bernama (Amendment) Act 2024 was gazetted on May 14 covering entities disseminating news via newspapers, publications, radio, TV and other mass communication platforms, including electronic and digital media. 'This amendment also aims to ensure Bernama's structure and functions are in line with developments in information and communications technology, as well as meeting the needs of the increasingly complex media industry,' he said. Meanwhile, May 29 has been gazetted as National Journalists' Day in conjunction with the publication of the first edition of Utusan Melayu newspaper that day back in 1939. At the event, Fahmi also launched the Bernama Motorhome-Mobile Studio, making it the first local media agency to utilise a recreational vehicle with mobile broadcast studio facilities that can be deployed to quickly disseminate news.

He said that with the launching of the Suicide Content Guidelines, he was hopeful that they could be implemented and practised by all parties. 'For us to make a structural change, especially in the culture of reporting, the entire organisation needs to understand the importance of respecting the principles that have been established in these guidelines,' he told reporters after launching the document at Menara Star here yesterday. Following the launch, he called for the Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia (CMCF), which had spearheaded the drafting of the guidelines, to engage with as many media organisations as possible to ensure the essence of the document could be adopted. The guidelines, he said, are not only applicable to mainstream media but also social media platforms. 'We cannot have these social media platforms washing their hands of content that could create online harm, particularly related to suicide,' he said. Fahmi said he had requested the Content Forum to ensure the participation of social media platforms in its initiatives. He pointed out that only TikTok is a member of CMCF, urging other social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and X to follow suit. 'TikTok took an early step even before we introduced the social media licensing regime and I wholeheartedly applaud its approach to voluntarily be a member of CMCF,' he said. CMCF chief executive officer Mediha Mahmood said the drafting of the guidelines was inspired by the Health Ministry's very own version. She noted that the ministry's guidelines were released in 2011. But with various changes since then, she said there was a need to have an updated version of the guidelines. She explained that many things had changed since 2011. 'Even the media landscape has changed, so we decided that we needed to have an updated version. 'We worked together with the Health Ministry and other stakeholders to have guidelines that's not just for media reporting but also for every form of content sharing,' she said. Mediha said the guidelines were also meant for content creators, social media influencers and filmmakers. The establishment of the Malaysian Media Council would further complement the implementation of the guidelines, she said. The council will comprise members who are knowledgeable on content-related matters. 'We can have these guidelines as a standard for all media organisations and if they have improvements that they think we should make to these guidelines, we can update it at any time,' she added. CMCF chairman Rafiq Rizal said the guidelines aim to create a framework that protects the vulnerable, empowers the informed and supports a healthier and more compassionate national discourse. 'In an era when headlines compete for attention and social media posts go viral in seconds, it is essential that our content practices are guided by intention and empathy,' he said. For instance, Rafiq said discussion on suicide matters should be done with care and intention. Among the objectives of the guidelines include preventing imitative suicides, promoting help-seeking behaviour, enhancing public awareness and education, as well as supporting media professionals and social media users. Also present at the launch were Star Media Group chairman Tan Sri Wong Foon Meng, Star Media Group group chief executive officer Chan Seng Fatt and Health Ministry deputy director-general (public health) Dr Ismuni Bohari.
