Sikh businessman shot dead outside his office in Canada

Hindustan Times16-05-2025

Chandigarh : A Sikh businessman was shot dead outside his office in Canada's Mississauga on Wednesday, sparking shock and concern across the South Asian and business communities in Ontario.
The victim was identified by multiple sources as Harjeet Singh Dhadda, a 40-year-old entrepreneur originally from Bazpur, Uttarakhand, who had built a successful trucking safety and insurance consultancy in the Greater Toronto Area.
While Peel Regional Police have not officially released his name, sources close to the investigation confirm Dhadda was the man killed in the broad daylight shooting.
Emergency crews responded to reports of gunfire near Tranmere Drive and Telford Way at approximately 11.53 am. According to Peel Police, officers arrived to find a man suffering from 'obvious signs of trauma'. Paramedics performed CPR at the scene, but the victim was later pronounced dead.
A spokesperson for Peel paramedics confirmed the man had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Unconfirmed reports suggest Dhadda was shot four times outside his office.
According to people familiar with the matter, Dhadda had recently received threatening phone calls from individuals demanding extortion money and had reported the matter to local authorities. However, police have not confirmed whether these threats are connected to the shooting.
'We are in the early stages of our investigation,' said constable Michelle Stafford of Peel Police. 'We believe this to be an isolated incident and there is no immediate threat to public safety.'
'The Homicide Bureau is now leading the investigation. At this time, there are no suspects in custody and no descriptions have been released. Police are canvassing the area for security camera footage and are urging any witnesses to come forward,' Peel Police said in a statement.
A heavy police presence remained in the area throughout the day as investigators continued to collect evidence.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Peel Regional Police or leave an anonymous tip through crime stoppers.

Punjab Police probes Tinder profile suspected to be linked to Amritpal

The Faridkot district police have written to various social media platforms, including the popular dating app Tinder, seeking details of accounts suspected to be linked to radical Sikh leader and Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh. Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Pragya Singh said on Saturday that a communication was sent to the companies last week as a part of its investigation in the murder case of Sikh activist Gurpreet Singh Hari Nau, in which the jailed MP is a key accused. Hari Nau, who had once been a close associate of Amritpal, was shot dead in October last year, allegedly at the behest of the incarcerated leader for speaking out against him through a Facebook page 'Hari Nau Talks'. 'During the probe, social media accounts, including Tinder, suspected to be related to the accused, Amritpal, were traced. Screenshots of these suspected accounts were attached in the communications sent separately to different companies. Any further statement will be made after analysing the data,' said the SSP. An official, seeking anonymity, said the investigators came across screenshots of a Tinder account with the user name 'Amrit Sandhu' where sexually explicit messages were sent. Sources said that the district police authorities have sought from Tinder and other platforms, details furnished by the subscribers for the said accounts, IP address logs, phone number, location details etc. 'These details will throw light on the possible reasons behind the targeted killing of Hari Nau,' said the source. Soon after Hari Nau's killing, Punjab director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav had stated that the activist had been killed at the behest of Amritpal. The MP's father Tarsem Singh, however, alleged that attempts were being made at 'character assassination' of Amritpal.

Tinder account under scanner: Punjab police probe dating app profile suspected to be linked to Amritpal Singh

Punjab Police have reached out to dating app Tinder for information on an account suspected to be connected to Amritpal Singh, the Khadoor Sahib MP, currently booked for the murder of Sikh activist Gurpreet Singh Hari Nau. The police have asked Tinder to provide user data including the account holder's name, date of birth, phone number, IP logs (since January 1, 2019), location data, email addresses, chat records, contacts, photographs, and media files associated with the account. According to the Faridkot police, Gurpreet Singh—a member of Amritpal's 'Waris Punjab De' outfit and vocal critic of Amritpal Singh—was shot dead on October 9, 2024, while returning home from a village Gurdwara, reported PTI. The case is being probed under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act. Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav had earlier alleged that the murder was carried out at Amritpal's behest. Authorities also claim gangster-turned-terrorist Arshdeep Singh alias Arsh Dalla masterminded the killing, as per PTI. Two shooters have already been arrested in connection with the crime. In a letter dated May 26, accessed by PTI, Punjab Police formally requested Tinder's assistance, stating: 'On October 9, 2024, Gurpreet Singh, an online activist who managed the Facebook page 'Hari Nau Talks' and was outspoken against Amritpal Singh, was murdered by two motorcycle-borne assailants. During the investigation, a Tinder profile under the name 'Amrit Sandhu' was discovered and is suspected to be linked to the primary accused, Amritpal Singh.' Amritpal Singh, currently lodged in Assam's Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act (NSA), rose to prominence for reviving pro-Khalistan rhetoric and modelling himself after slain militant leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. Singh and nine aides were detained under the NSA in 2023. (with inputs from agencies)

Punjab Police Seek Details Of Tinder Profile Suspected To Be Linked With Amritpal Singh

Last Updated: Punjab Police has sought details from online dating app Tinder about an account suspected to be linked with radical preacher and Punjab MP Amritpal Singh. As probe continues into the Sikh activist Gurpreet Singh Hari Nau murder case, the Punjab Police has sought details from online dating app Tinder about an account suspected to be linked with radical preacher and Punjab MP Amritpal Singh, who has been booked in the case. In the written communication dated May 26, the Faridkot police told Tinder that it was probing the killing of Nau who was shot dead on his way home from village Gurdwara on October 9 last year, news agency PTI reported. Nau was a member of the radical outfit 'Waris Punjab De' headed by Amritpal Singh. Earlier in October last year, Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav had alleged that the Sikh activist was murdered allegedly at the behest of Amritpal Singh, who is currently behind bars under the stringent National Security Act. Cops also claimed that gangster-turned-terrorist Arshdeep Singh, alias Arsh Dalla, plotted the killing. Police said two gunmen of the gang were nabbed in the case registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act. The letter written by police to Tinder read, 'This is to inform you that the Punjab Police, India, is currently investigating a murder case registered under FIR No. 159 dated 10-10-2024 under Sections 103(1), 126(2), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023 along with relevant provisions of the Arms Act. 1959, at Police Station Sadar Kotkapura, District Faridkot, Punjab, India." 'On 09-10-2024, Gurpreet Singh, a well-known online activist, was shot dead by two assailants on a motorcycle. The deceased managed a Facebook page 'Hari Nau Talks' and had been outspoken against the Sikh radical Amritpal Singh. Shooters have been apprehended and are under investigation." the police further wrote. 'During the course of investigation, a Tinder account under the name 'Amrit Sandhu' (screenshot attached) was identified, and the account is suspected to be linked with Amritpal Singh, accused in the said FIR. The communication and analysis of data might provide evidence to the Investigating Agency relevant to the FIR," they added. As part of probe, cops have asked Tinder to provide with them the subscriber details including name, date of birth, phone number, location information, and IP address logs since January 1, 2019, of the account. They also sought details of all linked e-mail addresses and phone numbers, photographs and media files uploaded by the account, friends/contacts list and mutual matches, chat history and messages exchanged via the Tinder platform and any other detail. A parliamentarian from the Khadoor Sahib constituency, Amritpal Singh is currently lodged in Assam's Dibrugarh jail. 'Waris Punjab De' outfit chief Amritpal has styled himself after slain Khalistani militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. First Published: June 07, 2025, 16:11 IST
