President Donald Trump said he would set levies on semiconductors in the coming two weeks, the latest indication he's readying a substantial expansion of his tariff regime. 'I'll be setting tariffs next week and the week after, on steel and on, I would, say chips — chips and semiconductors, we'll be setting sometime next week, week after,' Trump told reporters Friday aboard Air Force One en route to Alaska for a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. It wasn't clear if Trump misspoke about steel tariffs. He already hiked duties on steel and aluminum imports to 50 per cent in June. The president has repeatedly promised that levies on chips and pharmaceuticals are coming within weeks, but no formal announcements have yet been made. Both sectors have been under Commerce Department investigation since April, a prerequisite for Trump to impose tariffs on national security grounds. That process can prove complicated and probes can take months or longer to resolve. Manufacturers and artificial intelligence firms have been eager for more clarity about his plans for semiconductor rates, since chips are included in a wide range of modern consumer products. Last week, Trump said during an event with Apple Inc. Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook that he planned a 100 per cent tariff on semiconductors, while exempting products from companies that are moving manufacturing to the US. The White House hasn't offered a subsequent explanation for how that exemption would work, but Trump implied that Apple — which has pledged a $600 billion domestic manufacturing initiative — could be exempt. On Friday, Trump suggested the charge on imported semiconductors could be even higher. 'I'm going to have a rate that is going to be 200 per cent, 300 per cent?' Trump said. The US president indicated that he could speak about tariffs with Putin, and said he believed the Russian leader planned to bring business leaders to the summit. 'I noticed he's bringing a lot of business people from Russia, and that's good I like that because they want to do business,' Trump said. 'But they're not doing business until we get the war settled.' Trump in recent weeks has threatened to impose higher tariff rates on purchasers of Russian energy, including a pledge to impose a 50 per cent levy on goods from India. He has also suggested he could ratchet up economic costs on Moscow if the meeting does not go well.

HANOI: India's drive for defence self reliance and technological advancement has received a significant boost with the approval of a $2.3 billion (Rs 20,000 crore) project to develop next-generation Airborne Warning and Control Systems (AWACS) for the Indian Air Force (IAF), a report cited on Friday. The development underscores India's commitment to strengthening surveillance, reconnaissance, and situational awareness, while reflecting its foresight in addressing emerging security challenges amid a complex geopolitical landscape. 'AWACS platforms are critical force multipliers that provide real-time intelligence, surveillance, and command and control functions from airborne platforms. These systems detect, track, and engage threats at extended ranges, giving the IAF an unparalleled operational advantage in airspace management,' a report in Vietnam Times mentioned. 'The upcoming generation of AWACS will incorporate cutting-edge radar technology, advanced sensor fusion, and artificial intelligence-driven analytics. This will allow the Indian Air Force to monitor vast stretches of airspace with improved accuracy and responsiveness,' it added. According to the report, advanced detection capabilities will provide earlier warnings and enable coordinated responses to any aerial or missile threats. A key feature of this $2.3 billion project is its focus on indigenous research, development, and manufacturing, while enhancing indigenous defence technology. It stated that in line with the Government of India's 'Make in India' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiatives, the project aims not only to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers but also to strengthen the domestic defence industry ecosystem. Next-generation AWACS platforms, the report emphasised, are set to play a crucial role in boosting the operational readiness of the IAF. Additionally, with advanced early warning and command capabilities, the IAF will be able to carry out more effective air defence, offensive operations, and maritime surveillance. Furthermore, these systems are designed to interoperate effectively alongside other branches of the Indian Armed Forces, such as the Army and Navy, enabling a unified and synchronised approach to national defence. Through investment in cutting-edge surveillance technologies, the report highlighted that India bolsters its deterrence capabilities while reaffirming its commitment to regional peace and stability. The advanced AWACS systems will play a crucial role in monitoring cross-border activities and preventing incursions, thus promoting a secure environment that fosters economic growth and development. The report detailed that with the strengthening of aerial surveillance and command capabilities, the project not only reinforces India's defence posture but also encourages economic growth, technological advancement, and strategic autonomy. At the recent launch of OpenAI's latest model, GPT-5, CEO Sam Altman underscored this shift, noting that India is now the company's second-largest market after the United States, and could soon take the top spot. In his solo talk at the AI summit, Sanjay Puri said, "By 2030, India and the Global South will not just consume AI talent, but export it at scale. This can only be achieving with the democratization of AI talent and dismantling the invisible walls of the industry, building South-North skill corridors, and closing the rural-urban gap at home. Mutual recognition of credentials and open policy sandboxes can empower coders from localized AI skilling hubs in Tier 2 and 3 Indian cities to launch world-class models on equal footing with Silicon Valley." His keynote came at a moment of global concern over the risks of technological exclusion and the centralization of AI power. While private companies dominate AI development in the West, Sanjay emphasized India's alternative model centres on policy, public sector innovation, and community-scale application. Government-backed initiatives such as the India AI Mission, Anuvadini, AI Kosh, and Bhashini are building a comprehensive ecosystem to foster AI innovation, strengthening regional language capabilities, collecting inclusive datasets, and collaborating with startups to build India-specific AI solutions. "India's AI story isn't about catching up. It is about setting the pace for the world. From frugal-AI health diagnostics that bring life-saving care to remote villages, to AI tutors reaching 300 million students, we are proving that equitable talent pipelines unlock innovations the Global North would not dream of," he added.
