Sampdoria relegated to Serie C for first time
ROME: Sampdoria dropped down to the third tier of Italian football for the first time on Tuesday after a goalless draw with Juve Stabia consigned them to the lowest point in their history.
Italian champions in 1991 and European Cup finalists the following year, Samp finished 18th and in the direct relegation zone for Serie C after collecting 41 points from 38 games.
Tuesday's draw allowed Salernitana to leapfrog Samp into one of two relegation play-off places with a 2-0 win at Cittadella.
Samp, who posted a loss of €40.7 million (RM196.5 million) in their 2024 accounts, have spent the last few seasons dealing with serious financial problems and have spent this season sinking towards the drop after making the Serie B play-offs last season.
Samp were close to going bust after relegation to Serie B in 2023, but were saved that summer by current president Matteo Manfredi and former Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani, who has since exited the club.
The club's majority shareholder is Singaporean businessman Joseph Tey.
Club icons Alberico Evani and Attilio Lombardo were hired as coaches in April in an attempt to save Samp from the drop after significant transfer market activity both last summer and in January.
Evani is Samp's fourth head coach of the season after Andrea Pirlo, Andrea Sottil and Leonardo Semplice. - AFP

According to Ansa, the two leaders also differ from each other in their approach to the United States, with Meloni seeking to build close ties with President Donald Trump -- and play a negotiating role between the United States and the EU on tariffs -- and Macron advocating a more independent EU's stance. On the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, both countries have vowed strong support to Kiev, but the Italian prime minister has shown skepticism toward a French-British plan to send peacekeeping troops in case of a peace deal. Meloni's office did not release any statement after the bilateral meeting with the French president on Tuesday, nor held a press conference. On Saturday, however, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani declared Macron's visit would be "an absolutely positive event between two countries that are allies and neighbours."

The second seed has searched in vain for his usual sublime form on Parisian clay this year, needing four sets in his last three matches to dismiss determined opponents, but he had no trouble on a balmy evening on Court Philippe Chatrier. "It was like I could close my eyes and everything went in," Alcaraz said in his on-court interview. "My feeling was unbelievable, I tried to hit my shots at 100% ... today was just one of those matches where everything went in. "We were in the quarter-finals of Roland Garros and these matches aren't easy. I've lost to him twice and against Tommy, matches are very difficult. That helped me focus on my tennis and try not to go down or let him get into the match." Alcaraz motored through the opening set without dropping a game and grabbed his fourth break early in the second set after sparing Paul the ignominy of another bagel and the 22-year-old pulled further away to double his lead in only 53 minutes. Musetti beats Tiafoe to reach French Open semi-finals
PARIS: Italy's Lorenzo Musetti beat American Frances Tiafoe in four sets to reach the French Open semi-finals on Tuesday. Eighth-seed Musetti won 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 against the 15th seed after over two hours and 45 minutes of battle on Court Philippe Chatrier. He next plays either defending champion Carlos Alcaraz of Spain or American Tommy Paul for a place in the final. Musetti's serve proved to be a major weapon on the day as he fired down eight aces with an 81 per cent success rate on his first serve in gusty conditions in Paris. He also saved two of the three break points engineered by Tiafoe, who had 51 unforced errors to the Italian's 32. Musetti has been one of the form players on clay this season, reaching at least the last four in all three of the principal warm-up events ahead of the French Open.
