Drought conditions improve in Northern Colorado, but Western Slope still struggling
This week's U.S. Drought Monitor brings some welcome news for parts of Colorado. After a round of much-needed moisture last week, drought conditions have improved across northern Colorado — particularly in Larimer and Weld counties. That rainfall helped eliminate drought status along portions of the Front Range, leaving Denver, Douglas, and Arapahoe counties drought free.

Unfortunately, the rest of the state didn't fare as well. Portions of the Western Slope, including Mesa, Delta, and Montrose counties, are still under extreme drought conditions.

With the rainfall we've already seen this month — nearly an inch in the first four days of June — we've picked up close to half the precipitation we typically see for the entire month.

Looking ahead, the Climate Prediction Center's long-range outlook is signaling a potential shift to a drier weather pattern for northeastern Colorado, the plains and the Front Range during the core summer months — June, July, and August.

Protest in Queens over lithium-ion battery farm proposed for St. Albans
A Queens community launched a protest Saturday against plans to build a lithium-ion battery farm in their neighborhood. Residents opposing NineDot's proposal for a battery storage facility in St. Albans are concerned about its proximity to homes, a hospital and a welding shop. It's one of four battery farms planned for southeast Queens, according to residents. Demonstrators started marching at 10 a.m. on Linden Boulevard in St. Albans, with the message these battery storage facilities don't belong in their neighborhoods. Queens residents protest lithium-ion battery farms The Queens protesters say safety concerns are top of mind. The proposed site at the corner of 180th Street and Linden Boulevard is across from St. Albans Veterans Hospital and next to a welding shop, where flammable equipment is used, they said. The site was previously a gas station with underground gas tanks left in the ground for decades, according to neighbors. NineDot, a Brooklyn-based clean energy developer, says it has dozens of similar projects in the works across the New York metropolitan area. Like in Queens, neighborhoods across New York City, including in Brooklyn, have been fighting back against these kinds of plans. NineDot claims it is safe to live next to or near these sites and that they are certified by FDNY.

Sunshine returns Saturday across Colorado before rain returns
Saturday drier and warmer conditions take hold. Skies will be mostly sunny and highs will be in the low to mid-80s across the Denver metro area. CBS A weak push of cooler air from the north will increase low-level moisture, setting the stage for a cooler and cloudier Sunday. Highs will fall back into the low to mid-70s, with a return of isolated to scattered afternoon thunderstorms. Three is a marginal chance for strong to severe storms with large hail and damaging wind being the main concern. CBS Starting Monday, an upper-level ridge will begin building over the Central Rockies. That means Monday–Tuesday we will see gradual warming, with highs returning to the low to mid-80s.
