UGA study on economic power focuses on links between poverty and pandemics

New research from the University of Georgia and Oklahoma State University says that socioeconomic factors could be a major force behind how disease outbreaks emerge and spread.
In layman's terms, the universities' research said there was a link between poverty and pandemics.
The UGA study found that outbreaks of bacterial diseases like tuberculosis and salmonella were caused by factors including poverty, international travel and poor access to health care.

Additionally, the study found that while environmental conditions like weather or natural disasters, even how often you come into contact with animals or livestock, can impact diseases' spread, it was "often socioeconomic factors that help these diseases spread widely."
'It's important to think about what conditions we are creating that might lead to disease outbreaks in the future,' Payton Phillips, lead author of the study and a postdoctoral researcher at UGA's Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, said in a statement. 'It's our behavior, our medical systems, our travel, our economic conditions that play a role in disease outbreaks.'
As far as poverty and pandemics developing, researchers from UGA and OSU analyzed data from more than 300 global disease outbreaks.

In particular, UGA said the universities looked at the 100 largest outbreaks between 1977 and 2017, examining '48 different drivers of disease outbreaks, divided into socioeconomic or environmental categories.'
Among socioeconomic factors, researchers studied how use of antibiotics, contamination of water and food, sewage management and public health infrastructure impacted disease outbreaks.
While animals are a factor 75% of emerging diseases, UGA said, their study showed that it was human behavior that was a risk.
'Many viruses are naturally found in certain animals,' Phillips said. 'But it's our behavior that allows them to spread.'
An example cited by the study was the move of Ebola from bats to people.
Once the disease jumps from animal to human, it spreads rapidly.
The study itself said that 'socioeconomic factors also act as amplifiers of viral outbreaks, with higher case numbers in viral outbreaks driven by a larger proportion of socioeconomic factors. Our results demonstrate that it is useful to consider the drivers of global disease patterns in aggregate due to commonalities that cross disease systems.'

The potential benefits of the ‘Japanese walking' workout which fans claim is better than 10,000 steps a day

There have been numerous walking workout trends that have circled social media in recent years. It's no wonder—walking has numerous benefits, including reducing heart disease risk, strengthening your joints and heart, boosting your mood, and potentially helping you live longer. The latest trend making the rounds across TikTok and Instagram is known as 'Japanese walking,' and one creator claims that in just 30 minutes, you'll get 10 times the benefits of hitting 10,000 steps a day. The workout originates from a 2007 study based in Japan where 246 participants were divided into three groups: no walking, moderate-intensity continuous walking (walking at a moderate effort and taking at least 8,000 steps per day four or more days per week), and high-intensity interval walking. The third group, doing the high-intensity intervals, were instructed to walk slowly for three minutes, then walk quickly at a hard effort for three minutes, and repeat five or more times for four or more days per week. The researchers discovered that this group experienced noticeable improvements in strength, endurance, and decreased blood pressure, more so than the moderate-intensity continuous walking group. This workout is what's now become known as 'Japanese walking.' Another study from 2018 observed participants who did this exact walking workout over the course of 10 years. They found that those who kept up with the workout for the duration of the study experienced a 20% improvement in their leg strength, and a 40% improvement in their peak exercise capacity. The researchers concluded that those participants had protected against age-associated declines in physical fitness. Even those who weren't able to maintain the workout for the full 10 years had those improvements partially preserved. Since you're getting your heart rate up during the harder walking intervals, your body gets the benefit of more moderate-to-vigorous intensity exercise. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week for most adults, or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity—and pushing the walking pace every so often could help you reach that target. Additionally, research shows that moderate-to-vigorous intensity activity is associated with lower risk of early mortality and improved cardiorespiratory fitness. For the higher-intensity intervals, your heart rate should be elevated to the point where you're just starting to feel out of breath, but not at your maximum effort. The researchers consider this 70% of your max effort capability. Meanwhile, the lower-intensity walking should be an easy effort, where talking is still comfortable. Alternate walking at each intensity for three minutes until you reach 30 minutes. Incorporate this workout in your routine four times per week. For more on walking: Walking is a super exercise. The truth about the number of steps you really need, and maximizing the benefits Walking faster may help you live longer. Experts say to aim for this pace Walking more could add as much as 11 years to your life, study says. Here's how This story was originally featured on

OSU researching Asian Longhorned Tick that can be deadly for cattle

STILLWATER, Okla. (KFOR) — A heads up for cattle producers, there's a deadly tick in the United States, and researchers at Oklahoma State University are concerned. Last year, a case was found in the Eastern part of the state. 'These ticks can be so high on a single cow that they can actually result in so much blood loss that the animal can die from that,' said Dr. Jonathan Cammack, Assistant Professor at OSU and State Extension Specialist for Livestock, Entomology, and Parasitology. Dr. Jonathan Cammack said the Asian Longhorned Tick, also known ALT is native to East Asia. It was first seen in the U.S. a decade ago, and in Oklahoma last year when it was discovered on cattle in Craig County. LOCAL NEWS: Neighbors blame school construction for ongoing drainage crisis 'It's not going to have that bright white spot on it like a lone star. And they're also going to be very small, about half the size of the normal tick that we're usually expecting to see at this time of year,' said Dr. Cammack. They're also concerned with how fast the ticks can reproduce. 'They can reproduce asexually so they don't have that added challenge of locating a mate in the environment,' said Dr. Cammack. Which means a female can lay up to 2,500 eggs on one animal and that can consume enough blood to be deadly. Now, they're hoping research can help with ideas to slow or stop the spread. 'There's a project going on at the vet school where they're collecting ticks that are suspected to be Asian Longhorned Ticks, and then they're testing them for the presence of this pathogen,' said Dr. Cammack. The pathogen they're testing for is the Theileria orientalis Ikeda genotype. This year, the team is looking for new cases of the tick, and they hope ranchers will help them with surveillance. LOCAL NEWS: 'He just stabbed me': New video shows Edmond officer stabbed during traffic stop 'It's just kind of, you know, being in tune with your animals, checking on them regularly, you know, not like you're saying every day, but you know, not also once a year either,' said Dr. Cammack. While they haven't seen any new cases in our state so far this year, the tick and pathogen are present in Arkansas, Missouri, and Kansas. If you see it on your cattle, call your local veterinarian or a local OSU Extension office so they can collect the ticks and get them tested. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
