World No. 1 Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka successfully started her campaign at the Rome Tennis Masters, a WTA 1000 tournament.
On Friday, Sabalenka secured a straight-sets victory over Russia's Anastasia Potapova, winning 6-2, 6-2 in the second round of the tournament.
In the third round, the Belarusian player will face American Sofia Kenin, who also achieved a straight-sets win over Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 6-3, 6-0, in a match that lasted 66 minutes.
Sabalenka hopes to clinch the title to make up for her loss in last year's edition, where she reached the final but was defeated by Poland's Iga Świątek.
Meanwhile, China's Zheng Qinwen defeated Serbia's Olga Danilović in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, advancing to the third round. Denmark's Clara Tauson also progressed after her American opponent, Katie Volynets, withdrew.
In another match, Poland's Magdalena Fręch secured a straight-sets victory over Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, 7-5, 6-4.
Additionally, her compatriot Magdalena Linette triumphed over Greece's Maria Sakkari in three sets, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1.
