JD Vance's attempt to link Democrats to Epstein renews calls to ‘release the files'

The Guardian2 days ago
Four days after JD Vance reportedly asked top Trump administration officials to come up with a new communications strategy for dealing with the scandal around the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, he appears to have put his foot in it, sparking a new round of online outrage even as he tried to defuse the furor.
In an interview with Fox News broadcast on Sunday, the vice-president tried to deflect criticism of the administration's refusal to release the Epstein files by blaming Democrats. He accused Joe Biden of doing 'absolutely nothing' about the scandal when he was in the White House.
'And now President Trump has demanded full transparency from this. And yet somehow the Democrats are attacking him and not the Biden administration, which did nothing for four years,' he said. Epstein's former girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell, was convicted of conspiring with Epstein to sexually abuse multiple minor girls and sentenced to 20 years in federal prison during the Biden administration.
If Vance's attempt to switch public blame onto Democrats was the big idea to emerge from his strategy meeting with attorney general Pam Bondi and FBI director Kash Patel, which according to CNN he convened at the White House last week, then their labours appear to have backfired. (Vance denied to Fox that they had discussed Epstein at all, though he did acknowledge the meeting took place.)
Within minutes of the Fox News interview being broadcast, social media began to hum with renewed cries of 'release the files!'
Clips of Vanc smearing Democrats quickly began to circulate on X. 'We know that Jeffrey Epstein had a lot of connections with leftwing politicians and leftwing billionaires … Democrat billionaires and Democrat political leaders went to Epstein island all the time. Who knows what they did,' he said. Vance also repeated Trump's previously debunked claim that Bill Clinton had visited Epstein's private island dozens of times. Clinton has acknowledged using Epstein's jet, but denied ever visiting his island.
'Fine. Release all the files,' was the riposte from Bill Kristol, the prominent conservative Never Trumper who urged the documents to be made public with 'no redactions of clients, enablers, and see-no-evil associates'.
Jon Favreau, Barack Obama's former head speechwriter, replied: 'Release the names! Democrats, Republicans, billionaires, or not. What are you afraid of, JD Vance?'
Favreau added that Trump's name 'is in the Epstein files'. That was an apparent reference to a report in the Wall Street Journal last month that a justice department review of the documents conducted under Bondi had found that the president's name did appear 'multiple times'.
Other social media users used the Fox News interview as an excuse to re-run video of Trump in the hosting Epstein and Maxwell at Mar-a-Lago.
Epstein died in August 2019, during Trump's first presidency, while the financier and socialite was awaiting trial in a Manhattan jail; the death was ruled a suicide.

The White House has been caught in a bind over the Epstein affair which spawned conspiracy theories among many of Trump's supporters, which now senior figures in the administration had actively encouraged during the 2024 campaign.
In July the justice department announced that there was no Epstein client list and that no more files would be made public, a decision that clashed with earlier statements from top Trump officials, including Bondi's statement in February that a client list was 'sitting on my desk right now to review'. The decision triggered an immediate and ongoing uproar that crossed the partisan political divide.
Among the most viral clips in the aftermath of that reversal was video of Vance himself telling the podcaster Theo Von, two weeks before the election: 'Seriously, we need to release the Epstein list, that is an important thing.'
In his Fox News interview Vance also warned that 'you're going to see a lot of people get indicted' after Trump accused Obama of 'treason' and called for his predecessor to be prosecuted.
The director of national intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, has passed documents to the justice department that she claims show that the Obama administration maliciously tried to hurt Trump by linking Russian interference in the 2016 election to him.
Obama has dismissed Trump's call for his prosecution as weak and ridiculous.

Don Jr says his family got into crypto after banks refused to do business after Jan 6 ‘nonsense'

Donald Trump Jr. says his family 'didn't have a choice' but to get into crypto because banks didn't want to do business with them after January 6, 2021, referring to the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol as 'all the nonsense.' 'We got into crypto because we didn't have a choice,' the president's eldest son said on Fox & Friends Wednesday morning while discussing his family's cryptocurrency business's $1.5 billion digital coin deal. The Trump family's crypto business, World Liberty Finance, announced Monday that technology firm ALT5 Sigma would make a big purchase of its digital coin, $WLFI. ALT5 said it would sell $1.5 billion worth of shares, then use that money to purchase the Trump signature digital coin, which the family founded last year. 'Every major banking institution, the people that, two weeks before we were debanked, we could've called and gotten a loan in five seconds. They disappeared. We were left high and dry,' he said. 'Basically, during the first term, certainly after the…let's call it January 6… all the nonsense, it got significantly worse,' he said, referring to the deadly mob of his father's supporters who stormed the Capitol in an attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. Five people, including one police officer, died and several more were injured when the pro-Trump mob breached the Capitol building. The president granted roughly 1,500 people convicted of January 6-related crimes pardons immediately after taking office in January. 'We weren't even early crypto guys, but we figured, if they can debank the Trump Organization, if they can debank us, who can't they go after? And more importantly, who won't they go after?' he continued. Trump Jr. said that instead of going home and 'go cry in a corner,' they decided to launch World Liberty Financial, which he described as the future of banking. 'What we're doing with World Liberty Financial, I think, is going to shake up the entire banking system. It is literally the future of finance,' he said. Joining Trump Jr. on the segment was his brother, Eric Trump, and World Liberty Financial's co-founder and CEO Zach Witkoff, who said they were looking to 'democratize' the financial system. 'Put power back in the hands of the people, instead of the big boogy man behind the curtain,' Witkoff said. Following the Fox appearance, the three men went to ring Nasdaq's opening bell to celebrate the closing of ALT5's $1.5 billion offering.

US vice president JD Vance set to arrive in Scotland during family holiday

US vice president JD Vance is set to arrive in Scotland while on holiday in the UK with his family. Vance's appearance follows President Donald Trump's five-day trip last month, during which he hosted Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer at his golf resorts at Turnberry in South Ayrshire and Menie in Aberdeenshire. Vance is holidaying in the Cotswolds but travelled to the foreign secretary's Chevening House retreat in Kent on Friday. The Republican joined David Lammy carp fishing at the countryside estate. Police Scotland confirmed it was planning for a potential visit by the vice president. STV News understands Vance is set to arrive at Prestwick Airport on Wednesday following a visit with US military personnel at a base in Gloucestershire. Airspace restrictions have been put in place at the Carnell Estate in South Ayrshire between August 12 and 17, according to air traffic service provider NATS. Vance and his family are not believed to be staying at Trump's Turnberry resort. A Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'Details of any visit would be for the White House to comment on, however, it is important that we prepare in advance for what would be a significant policing operation.' In Kent, Vance said he had a 'love' for the UK but joked he had committed a diplomatic faux pas as he began his holiday. 'Unfortunately, the one strain on the special relationship is that all of my kids caught fish, but the foreign secretary did not,' he said. He described Lammy as a 'very, very gracious host'. Trump's visit to Scotland ended less than two weeks ago, after he met with both Sir Keir and First Minister John Swinney. Animal lover nursed orphaned baby deer back to health...then Louisiana wildlife officials turned up and EUTHANIZED it

A Louisiana woman lovingly nursed a baby deer back to health before state officials removed the animal from her property and 'cruelly' euthanized it. Kimberly Graham, 63, of Greenburg, near Baton Rouge, rescued an injured fawn her granddaughter named BabyBelle after receiving an urgent call on July 27, she revealed in a Facebook post. She gave the small white-tailed animal fluids and bottle-fed it after it had been wandering around injured for two days. Four days into her caring for the fawn, the Louisiana Department Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) showed up after receiving a tip from someone who reportedly spotted the deer wearing a 'hunter's orange collar' around its neck. They stated that Graham was running an illegal deer rehabilitation center at her home, according to the report, which was viewed by WBRZ. After packing the baby deer up in a cat carrier, officials allegedly euthanized BabyBelle just 20 minutes later. 'He just outright said: "The deer was euthanized 20 minutes after leaving your house,"' she told the outlet. 'They allowed me to glove my hands, feed her a bottle and potty her before putting her in a cat kennel to take her off.' Graham had been hopeful the fawn would survive and be released back into the wild, as BabyBelle had made significant strides in just the four days in her care. 'In a moment of crisis, I did what I was trained to do and save a helpless, tiny life. I fought hard for her, administering drugs I use on my horses. My fight wasn't enough and she was destroyed by gunfire,' she claimed on Facebook. She called the incident 'incredibly cruel.' LDWF denied shooting the animal, but did not publicly release its method of euthanasia for BabyBelle. The LDWF report did say the animal was euthanized because she had spent too much time in captivity away from her mother and would be unable to survive on her own. State Representative Lauren Ventrella, who is also an attorney, is now representing Graham and they are hoping to reach an amicable resolution. They are calling for an oversight hearing to help change the process at a legislative level. 'You have to look at the humanity of the situation of what is right and what is just,' Ventrella said. 'We know what the law says, but we have to utilize some common sense and what is best for the people.' LDWF, however, said: 'Spotted fawns are especially vulnerable, so they are afforded heightened protection from private possession under the law. 'When we find illegally possessed captive wildlife, we make every effort to return them safely and humanely to their natural habitat. 'As part of that mission, LDWF enforces laws set by the legislature to keep wildlife wild and protected in its native habitat.'
