No Mediation on Pak Acceptable: Modi to Trump
Prime Minister Narendra Modi told US President
Donald Trump
that India has never asked for, and will never accept, third-party mediation to address its dispute with
Pakistan
. Modi also told Trump that India now treats acts of
terrorism
not as proxy actions, but as acts of war.
The two leaders spoke over the phone late on Tuesday. Modi was in Canada to attend the G7 Summit. The conversation took place ahead of Trump's luncheon meeting with visiting Pakistan Army chief, General Syed Asim Munir.
Briefing the press on Wednesday morning, foreign secretary Vikram Misri said the phone call lasted approximately 35 minutes. Modi briefed Trump about Operation Sindoor, according to Misri. No topics related to trade were discussed in connection with the operation.
'The Prime Minister said talks regarding cessation of military action were held directly between India and Pakistan,' Misri said.
This was 'under the existing channels established between both militaries. It was done at Pakistan's request,' said Misri.
Modi also said India's actions were 'very measured, precise and non-escalatory.'
He also revealed that on the night of May 9, US vice president JD Vance had alerted India about a potential large-scale Pakistani attack. The PM told Trump that India had made it clear it would respond with even greater force, if provoked.
Trump asked if Modi could stop over in the US on his way back from Canada, but the Prime Minister expressed his inability to do so due to prior commitments.
Both leaders agreed to meet in the near future, Misri said. A physical meeting between Modi and Trump was not possible in Canada as the US President left the summit early.
This was the first conversation between the two leaders since Operation Sindoor.
The phone call is significant in the context of a lunch meeting between Trump and Munir. This is a rare meeting between a US president and a Pakistan Army chief in recent years.
Munir is also expected to meet secretary of state Marco Rubio and defence secretary Pete Hegseth. There are reports Pakistan can provide airspace and assets to the US military for its strikes against Iran.
Interestingly, Modi did not meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the G7 meeting in Canada, though it was earlier scheduled. He met leaders of France, Italy, Germany, Japan, South Korea, South Africa and Brazil, besides host Canada.

Watch: Donald Trump makes Juventus players uncomfortable with dig at trans athletes during their White House visit
Juventus players were left puzzled when US President Donald Trump asked if women could be part of their team during a White House visit. read more Juventus had a good day on the pitch on Wednesday in the US, beating Al Ain 5-0 in their Club World Cup opener after an eventful trip to the White House, where they were confronted by President Donald Trump about women playing in their team. Randal Kolo Muani and Francisco Conceicao both bagged braces as Juventus cruised to the top of Group G above Manchester City, who beat Wydad AC. Trump confronts Juventus team about 'men playing in women's sports' During their visit to the White House, some Juventus players and staff were asked by Trump, whom they presented with a club shirt, whether they thought a woman would be able to make their first team. Trump appeared to be making a point against transgender athletes. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Juve general manager Damien Comolli replied that the club had a 'very good women's team'. Trump asks the Juventus players standing behind him if women could make their team and tries to bait them into endorsing his transphobia — Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) June 18, 2025 More from Football The Juventus players stayed silent but were far more comfortable speaking on the pitch as they dismantled UAE's Al Ain at Audi Field in front of 18,000 fans. 'You don't go to the White House every day, so it was a real pleasure to go there,' said Juventus coach Igor Tudor. '(In the game) we did a number of excellent things, we played at a good tempo… all things considered it's a good start.' Kolo Muani, who extended his loan from Paris Saint-Germain to play in the tournament in the United States, opened the scoring after 11 minutes with a header from Alberto Costa's cross. Juventus doubled their lead 10 minutes later when Conceicao, on loan from Porto, skipped away from one defender in the box before firing home with the help of a deflection. Turkish forward Kenan Yildiz netted the third after 31 minutes, carving out some space on the edge of the box and drilling in at the near post. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD French striker Kolo Muani grabbed his second with a deft finish in first-half stoppage time to pile on the misery for Al Ain. Kouame Autonne had a goal disallowed for offside for the UAE side before Conceicao struck again, benefitting from another slight deflection. Kolo Muani might have completed his hat-trick when sent through but goalkeeper Rui Patricio shut him down well, and Douglas Luiz blasted narrowly off-target late on. Kolo Muani: 'Juventus had a great game' Juventus, who finished fourth in Serie A, are hoping to make up for a trophyless season with success in the United States this summer. 'The team had a great game, we're happy, we'll get ready for the next game,' said Kolo Muani. 'I just want to play well for my team-mates, for the club, and we'll see (how many I can) score.' It is unlikely to get any easier for Al Ain as they next face Pep Guardiola's Manchester City in Atlanta. 'We respected (Juventus) more than we needed to at the beginning and this was something that let them score two or three goals easily,' said Al Ain's Serbian coach Vladimir Ivic. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'We're at the World Cup and we played against such a good team… what (is there) to do? We have to think about the next one.' With agency inputs

Trump ends specialized LGBTQ+ youth suicide hotline; California Governor Newsom vows state will fill the gap
The Trump administration has ordered an end to federal funding for the nation's only specialized suicide prevention hotline for LGBTQ youth , sparking outrage from advocates and setting up a new flashpoint with California Governor Gavin Newsom. The move, which will take effect July 17 and eliminates the 'Press 3' option on the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, prompted Newsom to swiftly promise that California will step in to protect and expand mental health support for LGBTQ youth. The move, according to Newsom, will ensure the state remains a safe haven for vulnerable young people. Federal officials argue that the general 988 Lifeline, which will continue to receive $520 million in funding, is sufficient for all callers. A spokesperson for the White House Office of Management and Budget said, 'The president's Budget funds the 988 at $520 million - the same number as under Biden. It does not, however, grant taxpayer money to a chat service where children are encouraged to embrace radical gender ideology by 'counselors' without consent or knowledge of their parents.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villa For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas in Dubai | Search ads Learn More Undo Since taking office in January 2025, President Trump has signed multiple executive orders aimed at limiting transgender rights and rolling back diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in both government and the private sector. Live Events Advocates and mental health professionals have condemned the decision as dangerous and politically motivated. The Trevor Project , which has handled more than 1.3 million contacts from LGBTQ youth since the service launched in 2022, received a stop-work order this week. CEO Jaymes Black called the move 'devastating,' adding, 'Suicide prevention is about people, not politics. The administration's decision to remove a bipartisan, evidence-based service that has effectively supported a high-risk group of young people through their darkest moments is incomprehensible.' Governor Newsom responded swiftly, denouncing the federal rollback as 'outrageous and inexcusable.' He announced that California will invest further in mental health services for LGBTQ youth, highlighting the state's $4.7 billion Master Plan for Kids' Mental Health and direct partnerships with organizations like The Trevor Project. 'While this federal administration slashes services and tries to erase LGBTQ people, California will do the opposite. Every child — straight, gay, transgender — belongs,' Newsom declared. The state operates 12 crisis centers for the 988 Lifeline and maintains additional digital support resources, ensuring that LGBTQ youth in California will continue to have access to specialized crisis counseling. This latest policy clash follows a series of confrontations between Newsom and Trump, including over federal immigration enforcement and ICE raids. As the July 17 cutoff approaches, the fate of specialized suicide prevention services for LGBTQ youth hangs in the balance nationwide. In California, at least, state leaders are making clear they will not follow Washington's lead, and are prepared to invest heavily to ensure that vulnerable young people do not lose access to the support they need.
