KUALA LUMPUR - Five of Malaysia's finest footballers are in the Asean All-Stars squad to face English Premier League (EPL) giants Manchester United in a friendly at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil here on Wednesday (May 28).ShekhinahPR, the official public relations agency for the friendly, said the five are Muhammad Azam Azmi Murad, Muhammad Adib Abdul Ra'op, Muhammad Haziq Nadzli, Declan Lambert and Sergio Aguero.Terengganu FC right-back Muhammad Azam, known for his pace and attacking runs, said he is honoured to represent the country in the friendly."Wearing the national colours in this All-Stars side is a proud moment. I aim to give my all and show what Malaysian football can achieve,' he said in a statement issued by ShekhinahPR today.Penang FC winger Muhammad Adib, meanwhile, expressed excitement about the opportunity to play against a world-class team."This is more than just a match; it's a chance for all of us to demonstrate our skill and heart on the international stage,' he said.Meanwhile, Perak FC goalkeeper Muhammad Haziq said he is ready to step up to the challenge of facing some of the world's top attacking players."Standing between the posts against a team like Manchester United is a challenge I've dreamt of. I'm ready to do whatever it takes to keep our side in the game,' he said.Kuala Lumpur (KL) City FC's Lambert, who has been a Malaysian international since 2022, will anchor the defence with his experience and leadership."I'm honoured to lead this defence alongside my national teammates. Together, we'll show the spirit of Malaysian football,' he said.Rounding out the Malaysian quintet is prolific Sri Pahang striker Sergio Aguero, whose instinctive finishing and sharp positioning have lit up the Super League."Joining the Asean All-Stars is a tremendous opportunity. I'm proud to stand alongside my fellow Malaysians and showcase our talent on such a grand stage," he said.The Asean All-Stars team will be coached by South Korean Kim Sang Sik, who recently led Vietnam to the 2024 Asean Championship title.
The friendly, which is part of Manchester United's pre-season tour, is expected to draw tens of thousands of fans and highlight the best of Southeast Asian football talent. -- BERNAMA

JDT faces tough ACL Elite draw with top Asian clubs in 2025
JOHOR DARUL TA'ZIM (JDT) will face a stern test in the 2025/26 Asian Football Confederation Champions League Elite (ACL Elite). The Malaysian champions were drawn against Chinese Super League winners Shanghai Port FC and Shanghai Shenhua FC. Japan's titleholders Vissel Kobe and Machida Zelvia will also visit the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri. Shanghai Port are the current Chinese champions, while Vissel Kobe claimed Japan's top-tier league last season. For away matches, JDT will travel to Thailand to face Thai League winners Buriram United. The Southern Tigers will then head to Australia to take on Melbourne City FC. Further fixtures include clashes with Japan's Sanfrecce Hiroshima and China's Chengdu Rongcheng FC. JDT avoids South Korean sides Gangwon FC, Ulsan HD, and FC Seoul in this edition. Last season, JDT's campaign ended in the round of 16 after a 1-0 aggregate loss to Buriram United. The 2025/26 ACL Elite will run from September 15 to April 25 next year. Teams are split into West and East zones, with each side playing eight matches (four home, four away). Defending champions Al Ahli Saudi FC headline the West zone alongside Al Hilal and Al Ittihad. The top eight teams from each zone advance to the knockout stage in March 2026. The final stages will be held in Saudi Arabia under a centralised format in April. - Bernama

(Reuters pic) BERLIN : RB Leipzig today announced the signing of Brazilian striker Romulo from Turkish side Goztepe to replace Benjamin Sesko, who has left for Manchester United. Romulo, 23, has signed until 2030 for a reported fee of €25 million including bonuses. Leipzig badly needed a forward after Sesko's big-money move to United. The Slovenian, 22, reportedly cost United €85 million. Romulo scored 13 times and laid on nine assists in 29 league matches last campaign. Leipzig finished seventh last season, missing out on European football for the first time in the Bundesliga top flight, and have undergone a rebuild in Jurgen Klopp's first off-season as Red Bull's global head of football. The club have signed several promising youngsters ahead of next weekend's Bundesliga kickoff, including winger Johan Bakayoko and midfielder Arthur Vermeeren. They also have a new manager, Ole Werner.

Badminton faternity keeps their eyes open to Zafrul's vision for the sport
PETALING JAYA: With his 100th day as president of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) just around the corner, Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abd Aziz is set to present his vision and mission for the sport at the council meeting on Friday (Aug 15). While expectations under Tengku Zafrul's leadership are for Malaysia to capture the Thomas Cup and an Olympic gold medal in Los Angeles, the badminton fraternity is keen to know the blueprint he has set for the sport since taking over as president on May 10. For deputy president Datuk V. Subramaniam, who is also Selangor Badminton Association president, Tengku Zafrul is a leader with vision, and he believes whatever steps are taken will be in BAM's best interests. 'I'm happy working with him. The way he leads BAM and the approaches he has taken have been very good for the national body, and I can say he has his own clear vision,' said Subramaniam. Meanwhile, Perlis Badminton Association (PsBA) president and BAM council member A'amar Hashim is also eager to hear Tengku Zafrul's presentation, as he feels it is important for all council members to have a shared goal and direction. 'Right now, we council members are still wondering and waiting to know the new direction Tengku Zafrul wants to take, and of course, we are hoping for something better for Malaysian badminton,' said A'amar when contacted. He also believes that while it will be a challenge for Tengku Zafrul to surpass the contributions of former president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria, such comparisons should not be made. The reality, he said, is that Tengku Zafrul has the opportunity to build his own legacy, and Norza's work has paved the way for him to take BAM to greater heights. 'Tan Sri Norza's contributions were immense. You can see how hard he worked to establish the impressive academy in Bukit Kiara, as well as to attract sponsors to support BAM, along with other efforts that have become the foundation of the national team's current success. 'Now, Tengku Zafrul must ensure that success continues while at the same time bringing in fresh ideas, as he comes to BAM with a complete package,' he added. In the past three months, Tengku Zafrul has already taken proactive steps, including resolving the women's doubles contract dispute involving Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah, before they competed in the Japan and China Opens in July. He has also sought to engage more closely with fans by producing short videos and posts on the national badminton squad, such as explaining the world ranking points system, which some supporters may not have fully understood before.
