Peterborough community group says tax hike puts future in doubt
Up The Garden Bath has been best known for upcycling old bath tubs and using them as planters in Central Park.Founder Dave Poulton said the project was "more than just a shop" and called for the council to "acknowledge its contribution to regenerate the city centre".He said paying the full rate meant an extra £24,000 a year in costs, which he called "uneconomical" and "unaffordable", and said it put its future in doubt."We will have to rely on volunteers instead," said Mr Poulton."We have to bring the rates down to keep Unity alive."He said the project had generated £700,000 in sales for small businesses.
CICs are limited companies which operate to benefit the community they serve.Business rates are a tax on non-domestic properties including shops, pubs and offices. The fees are collected by local councils.Fifty-three properties across Peterborough receive a complete rates relief, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.Mr Poulton said all the revenue generated at the Unity store - which he said supported 50 small independent businesses monthly - was put back into the community, such as through crafts and gardening workshops.
'Wrong call'
The city's Labour MP Andrew Pakes and Conservative Paul Bristow, who is mayor for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, have both called for the decision to be revised.Bristow said he was "shocked" to learn the shop was being charged a full commercial business rate, while Pakes said it was the "wrong call".Nicola Day, deputy leader of the Green Party on the council, said it was "good to see unified voices" for the store.Mohammed Jamil, the Labour deputy leader and cabinet member for finance and corporate governance at the council, said the business did not meet the criteria for mandatory rate relief."This is because the business remains predominantly retail in nature and eligibility for charitable rate relief requires that the premises be used wholly or mainly for charitable purposes," said Jamil. He said officers were in touch with the business to see how they could support it through other means.

Costco shoppers rage over popular item they REFUSE to buy...'I hate it'
Costco members are still not over the retailer's poultry offering — chicken in plastic bags. The company switched from selling its ready-cooked chicken in plastic containers to plastic bags last year, which is continuing to anger shoppers. While inflation and tariffs have not forced the company to raise the $4.99 price tag, shoppers still say they 'hate the chicken in bags.' 'So many ways to improve this packaging and yet they don't. So hard to cut them apart and they always leak when defrosting in the fridge,' a Costco shopper wrote on Reddit. 'The packages of chicken parts are frustrating because they tend to be hard to separate without having leaks,' another person responded. 'The seam between portions are razor thin and the plastic bubble itself is very thin and prone to leaks from basic handling.' Some Americans have even opted to skip out on Costco's rotisserie chickens and purchase the meet from Aldi or Sam's Club instead. The fury over plastic packaging comes after some Costco members also accused the company of selling unappetizing chicken breasts. Besides bagged chicken, some Costco shoppers are infuriated with the quality and packaging for products like salad, tofu and peanut butter. 'I wish the peanut butter, almond butter, and MCT oil came in glass, not plastic,' a Reddit post creator admitted. 'I wish the tofu was high protein like Sprouts and Trader Joe's offers (almost twice the protein of the Costco stuff).' 'I wish the old muffins were still around. The current ones are bland and dry,' a customer claimed. 'The microwave popcorn bags are glued improperly and you can't open them without a knife,' another shopper claimed. Reddit users have slammed Costco's changes for months following its decision to swap Pepsi for Coca-Cola in food courts. Customers had been on the verge of boycotting since the chain swapped drink brands — which worsened after Costco started stocking Kirkland diapers made by First Quality. Customers branded the diapers as 'cheap' after longtime supplier Kimberly-Clark, the maker of Huggies, ended its partnership with the retailer last year to focus on its own premium products. Reddit users were enraged over the quality and packaging of items in several shopping categories Other issues food enthusiasts have found it hard to get over include the removal of cinnamon sugar churros from stores and the addition of frozen strawberry lemonade. Costco has been working to raise its customer satisfaction and member count, including by extending store hours for its Executive members. Executive tier members can now shop for an hour earlier than regular Gold Star members. The big box retailer will now allow its top tier members, who pay $130 a year, to shop from 9am to 10am on weekdays and Sundays, and 9am to 9:30am on Saturdays. These membership holders have praised the retailer for the policy change — but some employees have found it challenging to adjust to the new hours. Costco added pumps and expanded its gas station hours before implementing the exclusive perk. The hours are now 6:00 am to 10:00 pm on weekdays, 6:00 am to 8:30 pm on Saturdays and 6:00 am to 7:30 pm on Sundays. The chain is continuing to grow its nearly 1,000 location count — including opening a standalone gas station in California next year.

Jewellery chain Claire's UK business falls into administration with 2,150 jobs at risk
LONDON, Aug 13 (Reuters) - More than 2,150 jobs are at risk after the UK business of struggling jewellery chain Claire's called in administrators. Insolvency practitioners Interpath said on Wednesday they had been appointed joint administrators to Claire's Accessories UK Ltd, the operator of Claire's 306 stores across the UK and Ireland. The move comes a week after its parent filed for bankruptcy protection in the United States. Headquartered in Birmingham, central England, Claire's is known for its trend-led accessories and as a destination for ear piercing. The administrators said they intend to continue to trade the business while they assess its options, including exploring the possibility of a sale as a going concern. As such, all UK and Ireland stores will remain open. However, customers will no longer be able to place orders online. 'Over the coming weeks, we will endeavour to continue to operate all stores as a going concern for as long as we can, while we assess options for the Company," Will Wright, Interpath's UK CEO, said. "This includes exploring the possibility of a sale which would secure a future for this well-loved brand."

‘Sorry about JD Vance circus', manor house owner tells villagers
The owner of the manor house accommodating JD Vance in Oxfordshire has apologised to neighbours for bringing a 'circus' to their hamlet. The US vice-president is to stay in the 18th-century, Grade-II listed house after visiting David Lammy at Chevening, the Foreign Secretary's official country residence in Kent. Secret Service agents have been preparing the area around Charlbury, a village with 3,000 residents, for Mr Vance's arrival, putting in place checkpoints, installing new technology and cutting a makeshift helipad into a field. And the owner of the home where the vice-president is staying apologised to her community about the preparations and heightened public attention. In a message seen by The Telegraph, Pippa Hornby, who bought the house with her husband Johnny in 2017, told neighbours she was 'so sorry for the circus that is there for the next few days', adding that she hoped it would not be 'too disruptive'. It came as Mr Vance interrupted his holiday with a high-stakes meeting to discuss a peace plan for Ukraine. The vice-president and the Foreign Secretary held security talks on Saturday about a controversial Russian proposal under which Ukraine would permanently cede territory currently under occupation. The White House is pushing for Europe to accept a deal. Security preparations On Saturday in the Cotswolds, a number of people could be seen roaming the manor house's six-acre grounds, while a man in a black suit and tie with an earphone and a US/UK flag lapel badge stood at the entrance. Black trucks unloaded heavy duty boxes and marquees had been erected across the road at two locations, each housing a generator and chairs. A large antennae was erected behind the house, which locals mused could be a signal jammer, anti-drone system or a telecoms tower to beat the haphazard phone reception. One resident said: 'It's humming constantly, I thought if I go near it might improve my signal but no luck.' Other antennae appeared on the manor house's roof. Vehicles marked with the branding of an event production company and blacked out vans transporting people drove to and from the manor throughout the day. Workers could be seen arranging cushions on the furniture outside. A resident said the usual household staff had been relieved of their duties for the week.
