Scientists discover: how to be cool
If you are the type of person the elusive designation of cool has always evaded, then you are in luck, because a team of researchers has just published a study in the Journal of Experimental Psychology that delves into what exactly makes someone cool. So you can study it, you big dork.
Researchers conducted experiments with 5943 people across six continents — in the US, Germany, Spain, Turkey, Mexico, Chile, India, Hong Kong, China, South Korea, South Africa, Nigeria and, yes, Australia. These experiments were not, shockingly, playing a shonky rendition of Stairway To Heaven on an air guitar in front of people and then saying: 'So whaddya think of that? Pretty cool huh?' But I guess they had their own methodology.
What the study did find is that cool people share six main attributes: extraversion, hedonism, power, adventurousness, openness and autonomy. That would make for a pretty wild remake of Captain Planet.
Surprisingly, the definition of cool remained consistent across all those countries. So if you're a dag in Australia then bad news: you're also going to be a dork in Nigeria. Brutal. James Dean was only considered cool when he was smiling. Credit: Bob Thomas / Popperfoto
Also interesting: the attributes between coolness and goodness largely overlapped. Basically, good people are cool. Not being a good person? Deeply uncool. Your mum was right yet again. How uncool is that?
Participants were also shown photographs of people widely accepted as being 'cool': athletes, models, James Dean. They were shown photos of these people showing no emotion and then photos of these people smiling. And guess what? The pictures of them smiling were deemed cool, whereas the ones where they look, erm, coolly detached, not so cool.
All this time we thought being cool was looking blandly disinterested in everything while wearing dark sunglasses. Turns out it's being smiley, friendly, independent, open to new things and a little bit of a loose unit. Big teacher's pet energy here. Which is to say this multi-nation study has concluded pretty much the same thing Huey Lewis and the News told us in four minutes in 1986: it's hip to be square. How cool is that?

Controversial US comedian Matt Rife buys the Annabelle doll
US comedian Matt Rife and YouTuber Elton Castee announced over the weekend that they've purchased the home the infamous Annabelle doll resides in. The doll was made famous by The Conjuring movie series that was based on the work of famed paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. The Warren claimed the foll was possessed by an evil spirit. Annabelle resides in the Warren's former home in Connecticut on the east coast of the US. Rife will be the legal guardian of the Annabelle doll, and the entire haunted collection, for at least the next five years. He and Castee plan to open the Warren home — in Monroe, Connecticut — for overnight stays and museum tours. They're doing it so that people can experience and learn all about the building's haunted history, Rife said. 'If you know me, you know I'm obsessed with the paranormal and all things haunted,' Rife said. Rife said The Conjuring films have always been his favourite scary movies. 'I'm incredibly honoured to have taken over one of the most prominent properties in paranormal history,' he said. Tony Spera, the Warrens' son-in-law and co-director of the late couple's organisation, New England Society for Psychic Research, clarified to that he and his wife still own the Warrens' collection, including the Annabelle doll, and are only leasing them to Rife and Castee. 'We have no plans to ever 'sell' the artifacts,' he said in a statement. Ed and Lorraine Warren's paranormal investigations were turned into the horror movies The Conjuring, Annabelle and The Nun. Actors Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga play Ed and Lorraine in the franchise. The Conjuring: Last Rites is the latest film in the series and will be released in September. In the three standalone films about Annabelle, the doll is given as a gift to a nursing student who noticed strange occurrences with the doll. The nurse and her roommate call the Warrens, who pronounce the doll 'demonically possessed,' remove it from the home and encase it 'in a glass box to contain the evil spirited entity', according to New England Society for Psychic Research. Ed Warren died in 2006 at 79, and Lorraine Warren died in 2019 at 92. The New England Society for Psychic Research did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Rife's announcement comes less than a month after paranormal investigator and Annabelle doll handler Dan Rivera died on the Devils on the Run Tour, which features the Annabelle doll. Rivera, 54, was found dead in a Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, hotel room on July 13. According to E! News, a July 16 police report labelled his death as 'natural', but a final cause of death won't be determined until an autopsy is completed.

Limited Moonshine Gold Earthphase MoonSwatch (AUD$610) launches August 9 2025 Navy Bioceramic 42 mm case with Moonshine Gold moon-phase indicator Earthphase and Moonphase subdials follow opposite 29.5-day cycles for novelty Snoopy and Woodstock feature on subdial, inspired by August's Sturgeon Moon Available in-store only at select Melbourne, Perth, Sydney, and Brisbane Swatch locations Snoopy has added a golden touch to the OMEGA x Swatch Mission to Earthphase with a limited release in Moonshine Gold and navy, arriving on August 9th 2025, priced at AUD$610. Like previous releases, there's an Earthphase and Moonphase indicator, which is more of a functional gimmick than a useful tool, but it looks cool nonetheless. Both of these follow a 29.5-day cycle and move in opposite directions. For example, when there's a full moon, we see a new earth, and when there's a new moon, we glimpse a full earth. Watch enthusiasts can think of it as a reinterpretation of the retrograde function seen in some high-end timepieces. Before we take a closer look at the watch, it needs to be said that the OMEGA x Swatch Mission to Earthphase Moonshine Gold (AUD$610) will be released in-store only on August 9th 2025, at the following Swatch stores in Australia: Melbourne (Collins Street), Perth (Murray Street Mall), Sydney (Pitt Street Mall), and Brisbane (Queen Street). OMEGA x Swatch Mission to Earthphase Moonshine Gold | Image: Supplied / Swatch OMEGA x Swatch Mission to Earthphase Moonshine Gold Key Specifications Here are the key specs for the OMEGA x Swatch Mission to Earthphase Moonshine Gold: Case material : Navy Bioceramic case, crown and pushers : Navy Bioceramic case, crown and pushers Case diameter : 42.00 mm : 42.00 mm Case thickness : 13.75 mm : 13.75 mm Lug-to-lug distance : 47.30 mm : 47.30 mm Quartz movement : chronograph (seconds only) with moon phase and earth phase indicators : chronograph (seconds only) with moon phase and earth phase indicators Water resistance : 3 bar : 3 bar Strap: navy rubber strap with VELCRO® closure, navy Bioceramic loop The highlight of this limited edition MoonSwatch is the Moonshine Gold-adorned moon phase indicator on the 2 o'clock subdial. It's Snoopy-like and inspired by the 'Sturgeon Moon,' which appears during August (the month of this watch release). This moon takes its name from the sturgeon fish found in the Great Lakes in North America during summer, and Swatch has added a Snoopy-like cast net to one of the watches' moons to pay homage. It's a fun addition, but some of the Man of Many team thinks the dial is a bit crowded now, with three sub-dials, two of which are indicators. Like all MoonSwatch models, the OMEGA x Swatch Mission to Earthphase Moonshine Gold's case uses the patented Bioceramic material, a mix of two-thirds ceramic and one-third biosourced materials produced from castor oil. The dark navy blue hue has been created specifically for this model, and it looks like you're staring into deep space. On the caseback, the battery cover features an Earth-inspired design. However, we're more excited about the navy VELCRO rubber strap. This was previously introduced as a standalone product that you could purchase from Swatch stores, but has now been included from the factory to match the exclusive navy blue case hue. Once again, the OMEGA x Swatch Mission to Earthphase Moonshine Gold (AUD$610) will be released in-store only on August 9th 2025, at the following Swatch stores in Australia: Melbourne (Collins Street), Perth (Murray Street Mall), Sydney (Pitt Street Mall), and Brisbane (Queen Street). Being a limited release, we expect it to sell out rather quickly, even if MoonSwatch hype has died since the watches' first release.

Christina Haack 'won't rush into marriage with Christopher Larocca'
Christina Haack is "not wanting to rush into anything" with Christopher Larocca. The 42-year-old TV star finalised her divorce from Josh Hall earlier this year, and according to Heather Rae El Moussa, she isn't looking to rush anything with her boyfriend. Asked about the possibility of them tying the knot, Heather told E! News: "If so, it will be some time. She's not wanting to rush into anything." Despite this, Heather insists that she's a big fan of their romance, describing Christina and Christopher as a "cute" couple. The model said: "They're just really cute together. They've been together for quite a while, and I've really enjoyed every time I've spent time with him. "It's the first guy she's been together with that I've really liked." In June, meanwhile, Christina admitted that her divorce settlement was "not great". The TV star split from Josh, her third husband, in 2024, and the former couple confirmed in May they had agreed the terms of their split after undergoing mediation. Speaking on SiriusXM's Jeff Lewis Live, she said: "I signed something. There's like a process after the process. It was resolved in mediation after I think 12 hours. "I heard a saying once, like, if you both think you're screwed, then whatever you want. I don't know how it goes. "Look, it's not great, but I guess it's done." The HGTV star praised her legal team for handling her separation when news of the agreement was announced. Her representative told People magazine: "Christina is pleased to confirm that a settlement has been reached through mediation. She extends her sincere appreciation to her attorney, Laura Wasser, and her team for their professional guidance and support throughout the process." Christina echoed the praise on her Instagram account. She wrote: "You are all a true class act. I loved watching you in action and how you handle everything and everyone with class and grace. I appreciate you all beyond words. I have learned so much under your guidance. "And I'm grateful to have this behind me. I can't wait to move on with my life and focus on what's ahead and all my blessings."
