Nurul Izzah: PKR must woo youth voters through community outreach for GE16
BUKIT MERTAJAM, May 19 — Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) needs to strengthen its machinery and woo the public with community programmes for young voters to gain their support in the upcoming 16th general election (GE16).
Its vice-president, Nurul Izzah Anwar said a study conducted showed that 68 per cent of youth were not interested in politics, so the party had a role to take on this challenge.
'We understand, they (the 18-year-old voters) vote based on who their friends choose, if they hear their parents voting for Party A, they would vote for Party C, they won't follow, they want to rebel. This is the challenge we face.
'When we talk in the context of the 68 per cent of youth not interested in politics, this means we need to ensure that the community programme jibes with their spirit,' she said during her speech at the party's North Zone grassroots outreach programme at Dewan Ng Yam Huat here tonight, in the presence of PKR Women's Chief Fadhlina Sidek and Penang state leadership council deputy chairman Datuk Dr Mohamad Abdul Hamid.
Nurul Izzah, who is contesting the deputy president's post for the 2025-2028 session, also reminded members not to forget the party's history that had met and overcome various challenges since its founding on April 4, 1999.
When asked about a suggested debate between her and her rival Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, she said she would focus more on meeting the party grassroots in the last five days before the party election.
Nurul Izzah also stressed that she wanted to focus on GE16 and several upcoming state elections, something she described as more important than party elections.
Nurul Izzah and Rafizi will be contesting the PKR deputy party presidency at the party elections next week. — Bernama

Tengku Zafrul yet to decide next move after senatorship ends
KUALA LUMPUR: Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz said he wants to continue serving the country 'politically', with or without a government position, after his term as a senator ends in December. The Investment, Trade and Industry Minister, however, has yet to decide on his next course of action once his senatorship concludes. "I have not thought about it yet. Because there's so much (work) I need to focus on right now. "But my intention after December is to continue contributing in any way I can. "It doesn't have to be a position in government even. At the same time, he reaffirmed his commitment to focus on his current responsibilities at the ministry before completing his tenure as a senator, which is set to end in December. "My priority right now is to complete my term as a senator and to conclude various critical matters related to the country's investment and trade sectors, in line with my responsibilities at the ministry. "First and foremost, let me make it clear that I will focus on my current tasks. There is still a lot of work to be done at the ministry, as you are aware," he said. When asked about his position as minister after his senatorship ends, Tengku Zafrul said the matter would be entirely at Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's discretion. "I intend to continue contributing in my capacity at the ministry. However, whether I remain as minister after December depends on the prime minister's decision," he added. Tengku Zafrul reiterated that his decision to leave Umno and join PKR had nothing to do with wanting to take on another role in the government, whether as a minister or Menteri Besar. "I've said many times, even before I resigned from Umno, that I have no intention of contesting in any by-elections. "My decision to resign has nothing to do with wanting a government position, whether as a minister or Menteri Besar," he said. Tengku Zafrul on May 30 had announced his resignations from Umno. He had also announced his intention to join PKR.

Report on alleged sukuk fund misappropriation linked to Klang Valley highway project ready in two months, says MACC chief
BANGI, June 12 — The investigation report on the alleged misappropriation of sukuk funds meant for the construction of a highway in the Klang Valley is expected to be completed within the next one to two months, according to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the probe is progressing well and statements have been recorded from 53 witnesses so far. He added that more witnesses are expected to be called soon to assist in completing the investigation. 'This case will take about one or two months to complete as there are many aspects to examine and documents to analyse, including financial statements,' he said. He was speaking at a press conference after the 2nd Convocation Ceremony of the MACC's Certified Law Enforcement Programme here today. Azam said the recording of a statement from a person with the title 'Tan Sri' resumed today after a six-hour session was conducted at the individual's residence yesterday. Earlier, media reports stated that the MACC had seized various assets, including handbags, jewellery, luxury vehicles, watches, cash and high-end properties, collectively estimated at RM32 million, believed to belong to a highway concessionaire bearing the 'Tan Sri' title. In a separate case, Azam clarified that the statement from renowned fashion designer Datuk Jovian Mandagie was recorded yesterday in Jakarta, not Bali, as previously reported. It was earlier reported that the MACC investigation team would be in Jakarta for two days to record the statement of the 39-year-old designer, who is Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob's former son-in-law, in connection with an investigation into asset ownership involving the former prime minister. Ismail Sabri had been called in multiple times to the MACC headquarters to assist in investigations related to corruption and money laundering involving expenditures and funding for the promotion and publicity of the 'Keluarga Malaysia' programme during his tenure as prime minister from August 2021 to November 2022. — Bernama

PM Anwar: Govt considering dedicated commission for TVET sector
MELAKA, June 12 — The government is mulling over the proposal to establish a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Commission in line with the TVET reform agenda that is being actively implemented. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this was because the development of TVET under the National TVET Council chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has shown encouraging results, including an increase in the number of students. 'I appreciate the role of the TVET Council, but as those closely monitoring the sector's development, we must consider proposals such as establishing a dedicated commission for TVET, and we will assess this as swiftly as possible in response to the sector's evolving needs. 'With the number of students and types of training increasing, I, together with the Ministry of Finance, will look into whether current facilities are adequate and how to create synergy between government-linked companies, private sector players, and existing TVET institutions.'
