eSwatini national arrested for August 2024 'revenge' murders of six men in uMlazi

A year-long investigation into a mass shooting in uMlazi has led to the arrest of a 28-year-old foreign national believed to be one of the gunmen involved in the brutal murder of six men at an informal settlement in V/6 Section on 17 August 2024.
According to a statement issued by the Office of the Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in KwaZulu-Natal, the suspect, Melusi Dlamini, was arrested in Krugersdorp, Gauteng, on Friday, 4 July 2025.
'Relentless investigation by the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit detectives has resulted in the arrest of a 28-year-old foreign national for the murder of six people,' said SAPS spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda.
On the night of the killings, six men were drinking alcohol with three women when they were approached by two men claiming to be looking for cigarettes. After being told that no one was selling, the men left, only to return moments later.
'They instructed the three women to lie down as they fired shots at the male victims. Six men were shot and declared dead at the scene,' the statement read.
Investigations later revealed that the attack was reportedly motivated by revenge. It is believed the deceased, all Xhosa-speaking men, had previously been involved in a physical altercation with Swati nationals in the same area.

Dlamini, identified as a Swati national, was charged with six counts of murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition. He appeared in the uMlazi Magistrate's Court on Monday, 7 July 2025, where he abandoned his bail application. The matter was remanded to 14 August 2025.
Police say they are still searching for the second suspect involved in the shooting. 'Investigations are underway in search of the second suspect,' said Netshiunda.
The SAPS has called on members of the public who may have information about the second suspect to come forward.

He was arrested on the spot, and the girl was urgently taken to a nearby medical facility. She was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), where she remained for two days before tragically succumbing to her injuries. Following this, the prosecution requested a postponement to allow for further investigation into the matter. Suspected extortionists arrested in Western Cape shoot-out
Police have arrested suspected extortionists in Lower Crossroads, Western Cape. SAPS members yesterday followed up on information about suspected extortionists at a building on Ntambanane Road, Lower Crossroads. After conducting surveillance, officers confirmed that the suspects were at the address and approached the premises, where the suspects opened fire on them. 'The members retaliated and in the process injured a 29-year-old suspect, who was arrested and taken for treatment at a nearby medical facility under police guard,' SAPS said. During the arrest, a 9mm Z88 firearm with its serial number intact, three 9mm magazines, and 45 9mm rounds of ammunition were recovered and confiscated from the premises. Further investigation revealed that the firearm had been reported stolen at Philippi SAPS in June. 'The members also arrested two females, aged 19 and 28, who were found on the premises. All three suspects face charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and illegal possession of ammunition, a charge of attempted murder, and attack on police. SAPS warns of increase of ATM-related scams The South African Police Service (SAPS) says it has noted with concern the increase in reports of ATM-related scams. 'Criminals continue to target unsuspecting community members, particularly at busy cash points,' the South African Police Service said in a statement. The public is urged to remain vigilant and exercise caution when using ATMs. The following safety guidelines are strongly recommended: Always remain alert and aware of your surroundings before and after using an ATM. Never disclose your card or PIN (Personal Identification Number) to anyone. Do not write your PIN on your card or keep it with your card. Insert your card only when prompted by the ATM screen. Avoid using ATMs with blank screens or those in poorly lit or secluded areas. Shield the keypad with your hand and body when entering your PIN. Monitor the card slot closely to prevent skimming or card-swapping. Do not accept assistance from strangers at ATMs. Be cautious of individuals who attempt to distract you, as criminals often operate in groups. If your card is retained by the ATM, immediately contact your bank's toll-free stop-card line. Never allow others to call the bank on your behalf, as this may be an attempt to defraud you. Security personnel posted at ATMs are there to deter crime and are not authorised to assist with transactions. For assistance, approach a bank official directly.
