Bengals' offense gets an eyebrow-raising ranking ahead of training camp

USA Today02-07-2025
Most would probably agree Joe Burrow's Cincinnati Bengals offense deserves a spot in the top five rankings when looking ahead to the 2025 season.
But not all rankings would agree, it seems.
A new effort from Pro Football Network keeps the Bengals in the top 10, but ranks them seventh.

Granted, this might feel like nitpicking. A spot in the top 10, after all, is a spot in the top 10.
But Burrow, coming off an MVP-like season while completing 70.6 percent of his passes for 4,918 yards and 43 touchdowns against nine interceptions, makes it feel like 2025 projections should probably be even higher.
The Bengals, after all, fielded a bottom-three rushing attack last year and remade the entire scheme with a new offensive line coach, to name one upgrade. A better complementary defense could help, too.
Still, this is summer nitpicking as the Bengals get ready to hit training camp and start working toward proving these types of projections wrong.

Former Notre Dame lineman Howard Cross III making waves for the Cincinnati Bengals in camp

It wasn't a surprise when new Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Al Golden pushed the team to pick up one of his former Notre Dame players in defensive tackle Howard Cross III. Golden knows exactly what the defender brings to the table, and while he went undrafted, the Bengals quickly made a move to sign him. Cross wasn't guaranteed a spot on the roster due to this fact, but he has been playing very well and might be pushing Cincinnati to keep him around. Their head coach Zac Taylor recently spoke to the media about Cross, and gave a glowing review. He said that his undrafted rookie defensive tackle 'has shown the ability to do the things we're asking those guys to do. Do the dirty work and do it how we want it done.' It's pretty safe to say that Golden knew that Cross could be productive at this level, and them getting a chance to reunite should be great for both of their careers. James Harden includes Sixers' Joel Embiid in all-time teammate lineup

The James Harden-Joel Embiid duo for the Philadelphia 76ers wasn't together for a long time, but their production on the floor was fantastic. Harden was the perfect complement for Embiid as his wizardry with the ball as a playmaker made the game so much easier for everybody involved. In the 2022-23 season, Harden averaged a league-leading 10.7 assists and helped Embiid win the MVP award. The duo was almost unstoppable as the two of them played off each other so well in Philadelphia. However, after Harden was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers, things seemed to go sour between the two of them. When Harden made his return to Philly in March of 2024, he was asked if he still talks to Embiid with which he simply replied: "No." Then, Embiid told ESPN that he doesn't know why he and Harden don't talk anymore. However, it appears that the respect is still there for the big fella as Harden was recently asked to put together his all-time teammate starting lineup and Embiid was included in it. It's high praise when considering the players that The Beard has played with in his career. The Harden and Embiid era didn't produce much playoff success--though they were very close to the Eastern Conference finals in 2023 before blowing a 3-2 lead to the Boston Celtics--but they were highly productive. The Sixers were able to lean on those two for a lot of their success.
