The Indo Daily: ‘Prose and Cons' – Why the Kinahan's ‘Dapper Don' loved Dumbo
However, the man who became known as 'The Dapper Don' nursed a passion for literary creativity while behind bars in Portlaoise Prison.
In an incredible twist worthy of any decent work of fiction, Kinahan Sr began to write original work under a playful pseudonym – Cian Sharkhin, an anagram of his own name.
As it turned out, he found another use for his alias once he left prison behind.
Today on The Indo Daily, Tessa Fleming is joined by Fergus Shiel, Managing Editor of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, to hear about the surprising side-hustle of Christy Kinahan Sr, and why he was inspired by, of all things, Dumbo the Elephant.

The Indo Daily: The trouble with EuroMillions – Dolores McNamara's €115m win, 20 years on
Dolores McNamara was enjoying a night out with her friends when the EuroMillions draw flashed up on the TV screen. The multi-million lottery bonanza was relatively new in Ireland in the summer of 2005, and the last thing Ms McNamara expected was for her impulse buy of a €2 ticket to pay off. Once the draw was announced, things would never be the same for Dolores McNamara, now a jaw-dropping €115 million better off. The beaming winner presented herself to the public upon picking up the novelty-sized cheque, though an avalanche of attention and subsequent distressing incidents perhaps contributed to her retreat from the spotlight. 20 years on, what became of Dolores McNamara and her many millions? On this episode of The Indo Daily, host Tabitha Monahan is joined by Irish Independent southern correspondent Ralph Riegel to look back on one of the most lucrative stories in modern Irish history.

The Indo Daily: Porn and violence in the 'digital age crackdown': Are children safe online?
However, despite a nine-month lead-in for the likes of Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and X, it seems there are still major issues to be ironed out. As it turns out, children are still able to access adult-themed content, including hardcore pornography. Irish Independent Technology Editor Adrian Weckler created child user accounts to test out any age-related barriers that may be in place on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and X. 'I used a new computer, a new browser, nothing that had any fingerprints of me or my previous browsing history,' he said. 'None of them asked me to do anything but self-declare my age. And most of them allowed me to watch full adult content, full intimate sexual content, torture videos, extreme violence, and lots of other things.' In the UK, it's a similar story, as enhanced age verification checks for adult-related online material come into effect today, amid a storm of privacy concerns. 'It's faced a huge amount of criticism, especially within the Conservative Party,' says Sophie Peachey, Assistant News Editor with The News Movement. 'A lot of people are worrying that it's overreaching, and that it limits free speech and it's intrusive, especially when you feel like you're in sort of a surveillance state being watched online.' On this episode of The Indo Daily, host Kevin Doyle is joined by Adrian Weckler and Sophie Peachey, to try to answer what might seem like a simple question, though one that has become increasingly complicated – is it even possible to keep children safe on the internet?

The Indo Daily: Talk to Joe - Liveline's most jaw-dropping moments
Twenty-seven years after the first broadcast, Joe Duffy is set to hang up the iconic Liveline microphone on RTÉ Radio. Having established himself as a voice for the voiceless, Duffy became a household name and a staple of daily Irish life. After taking over from Marian Finucane in the late 1990s, Duffy became synonymous with Liveline, which maintained a loyal and vigorous listenership throughout his almost three-decade stint at the helm. The show became a public confessional, where callers opened their lives up and shared intimate details about their struggles, as well as giving plenty of honest opinions. From fiery on-air clashes to moving personal stories, Liveline often sparked conversations that led to real societal change. As Joe Duffy takes to the air one last time for his curtain call, speculation is mounting over who will now succeed him on the flagship show. On today's The Indo Daily, Melanie Finn, Entertainment Correspondent with the Irish Independent, looks back on the show's many iconic moments, and discusses who is the leading candidate to inherit the mic.
