Kerala becomes first digitally literate state in India: Vijayan
Kochi: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday formally declared the state as the first 'digitally literate' state in the country, following the successful completion of the 'Digi Keralam' campaign of the local self-government department (LSGD) to identify 'digital illiterates' and train them to use smartphones and access government services. The 'Digi Keralam' campaign of the LSG department was rolled out statewide in 2023 after finding inspiration from Pullampara panchayat in Thiruvananthapuram district. (ANI PHOTO) At the event in Thiruvananthapuram, CM Vijayan also interacted on a video-call with 105-year-old former imam MA Abdullah Moulavi Baqafi, one of the oldest learners, and clicked selfies with two elderly women who had become ambassadors of the campaign. The 'Digi Keralam' campaign of the LSG department was rolled out statewide in 2023 after finding inspiration from Pullampara panchayat in Thiruvananthapuram district which trained all of its residents to become digitally literate and use smartphones for basic purposes. The objectives were to help sections of the public, especially the elderly and those from marginalised communities, get acquainted with internet and smartphones and use them to know more about and access government services which are in the process of being digitalised. Over 80 lakh households across all rural and urban local bodies in the state were surveyed, as part of which over 21 lakh were identified as 'digitally illiterate', 99.98% of whom were trained and eventually passed evaluations. Over 15,000 of those trained were above the age of 90. The three-part module, set as per the directions of the Union government, to achieve digital literacy included learning how to switch on and switch off the smartphone, save contacts, call people, use voice messages on WhatsApp, using apps like YouTube and Google search and doing online payments for utilities like LPG and electricity. 'Thanks to the campaign, many people, especially elderly sections, are able to pay their bills online and access e-services of the government. They are able to interact wiith others through social media. The model set by Pullampara panchayat has been replicated across the state. Accessing the internet and being able to handle computers and smartphones are the prerequisites to be labelled as digitally literate. In India, the % of the population who are digitally literate stands at 38%. It shows how big our achievement in Kerala is,' said CM Vijayan. 'We worked tirelessly for this campaign. Over 2.57 lakh volunteers were part of the enrollment and learning campaign. It included NSS, NCC, NYK volunteers, school and college students, Kudumbashree personnel, SC/ST promoters and library council members. We thank everyone,' the CM said.

‘Not Possible': Mumbai Woman's Bold Reply To Boss Asking Her To Report To Office Amid Rain
A Mumbai woman stood her ground and refused to oblige her manager's unrealistic expectation after being denied the WFH option amidst heavy rain. Torrential rains in Mumbai have had a widespread impact. In a viral incident, an assistant manager was denied the work-from-home option by a strict employer despite severe waterlogging and consistent rains in the city. But the rebellious woman stood her ground, responding with 'not possible" to the boss, who demanded that she must report to the office regardless of the flood-like conditions. In a viral post on Reddit, a co-worker revealed the woman's steadfast reply to a strict manager via a WhatsApp screenshot, which once again sparked a debate on work culture practices in India. Many criticised the manager for showing zero empathy despite being well aware of the crises. While many private companies permit employees to work from home during such circumstances, this office and its manager insisted on unwavering attendance and demanded that the employee must be present, come what may. Woman Stands Ground Against Employer Who Denies WFH Amidst Rains Even as the employee made clear her predicament and requested WFH, the manager insisted that she needs to be at the office even if she is late. But the employee commendably dismissed the unrealistic expectation, telling the ignorant employer in no uncertain terms that it won't be possible for her to reach the office that day. The incident and the viral post resonated with many employees on the internet, who raised their support for the woman and praised her for not relenting to the irrational demand of the employer. Internet Applauds Woman's Strong Response To Ignorant Manager 'Please convey my salute to her," wrote a user. Another said, 'Damn, a true corporate baddie." The story encouraged a user to express their ordeal at a former employer. 'I did the same in my previous organization but it was because my bike was turning on (dead battery) coupled with extreme rain. My office was 31 kms far from my home. I asked for wfh (he himself never came to the office). He rejected. I mailed a video of the rain, dead bike, and water logged streets by keeping HR and CEO in CC," they wrote. 'HR gave me wfh and scheduled a discussion call with me. In the call, my POV was not taken into consideration. This went on for around 2-3 months. I started giving interviews and 1 month before appraisal, I gave my 2 months notice." The manager's insensitive and rigid response to a simple WFH request was also the sign of a toxic work culture at this specific organisation at a time when many corporate companies have been forced to adopt a more employee-friendly approach.
