Assembly Issues Notices To 4 AAP MLAs, Alleges Breach Of Privilege
New Delhi: Delhi Assembly issued notices to leader of opposition Atishi and three other AAP MLAs for allegedly "disclosing" deliberations of the recently held meeting of the general purposes committee, where the decision to install the portraits of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Dayanand Saraswati and Madan Mohan Malviya in the assembly gallery was taken.
Officials said that besides Atishi, the notices were sent to AAP MLAs Kuldeep Kumar, Veer Singh Dhingan and Zubair Ahmed, directing them to submit written comments on the complaint on or before May 30. A complaint of "contempt and breach of privilege" was filed by BJP members in the committee.
Reacting to the notices, former deputy speaker and senior AAP functionary Rakhi Bidlan charged BJP with "disrespecting Dalits and women", by treating the demand as a punishable offence.
"This is not just political arrogance. It is a direct insult to the legacy of India's first Dalit woman educator," she said.
A senior assembly official said the statements of AAP functionaries contained several "factually incorrect, misleading and politically motivated" allegations against the speaker and the committee. "AAP functionaries were deliberately twisting and misrepresenting the facts. Action, as deemed fit, shall be taken," the official said.

A row erupted after the general purpose meeting on Wednesday as AAP alleged that its MLAs, who were on the panel, proposed that Mata Savitribai Phule's portrait also be installed on the Delhi assembly premises, but the BJP legislators did not allow this to be passed. The assembly officials, however, claimed that no written proposal was submitted and the issue was raised verbally.
In a complaint addressed to Delhi assembly speaker Vijender Gupta on May 22, deputy speaker Mohan Singh Bisht, BJP chief whip Abhay Verma, and party MLAs Raj Kumar Bhatia and Tilak Ram Gupta alleged that the AAP members, during the deliberations, made a passing suggestion that Phule's portrait could also be installed.
"However, we were shocked to find out that the members of AAP twisted the facts and declared in a press conference that the ruling party members opposed their proposal and did not allow for the portrait of Mata Savitribai Phule to be installed," the complaint said. Bisht added that the very fact that the deliberations of the committee were disclosed was a "serious issue of breach of privilege" and added that their suggestion was noted in the minutes of the meeting.
"Our rules provide that the deliberations cannot be disclosed unless the report is submitted to the House or the speaker allows it. Accordingly, we are hereby giving notice for initiating breach of privilege and contempt proceedings against Atishi, Kuldeep Kumar, Veer Singh Dhingan, and Zubair Ahmad for disclosing the details of proceedings of the GPC and also for disclosing it in a false and twisted manner," the BJP legislators said in the complaint.
They accused AAP MLAs of "disclosing the deliberation" with a "political and mischievous agenda".
"The conduct of these members... in disclosing the details of the deliberations and also misrepresenting it in a false manner for cheap political mileage needs to be severely dealt with," the BJP MLAs said.
"Not only have they insulted us personally and our beloved party, but they have dragged the privileged institution of the assembly and its committees into the public domain with a view to besmirch the reputation of the ruling party members and cast aspersion on the working of the committees," they added.

"I Was Informed Much Later": Karnataka Chief Minister On Bengaluru Stampede
New Delhi: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday distanced himself from the stampede incident outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) IPL win celebrations on June 4, blaming top police officials for the failed security arrangements. According to Mr Siddaramaiah, he was informed about the stampede much later. The Chief Minister also clarified that the government did not organise the event. "It was not a government-organised event at the stadium, and I had not been invited. Despite the victims being admitted to the hospital by 3:50 pm, I was informed of the incident only at 5:45 pm. The stampede should never have occurred. It is deeply saddening," Mr Siddaramaiah told the media. He said that the police department failed to share comprehensive information about security arrangements at the venue beforehand. "Five police officers have been suspended. The state intelligence chief and my political secretary have been transferred. The government is taking this case very seriously. Appropriate action is being taken. The government is not at fault, but the incident is undoubtedly distressing," the Chief Minister said, adding that they are treating the incident with "utmost seriousness". Eleven people died and many more were injured in a stampede near the Chinnaswamy Stadium last week, where a large number of people had gathered to participate in the RCB victory celebrations. Since then, Siddaramaiah has been facing a barrage of criticism, with the BJP and JD(S) members calling for his resignation. Responding to this, he said, "The government has not taken any wrong steps. Action has been taken against the guilty. So, there is no reason for embarrassment. During the Kumbh Mela in Uttar Pradesh, many died due to a bridge collapse. Did their Chief Minister resign? Did BJP or JD(S) seek their resignation?" Mr Siddaramaiah also hit back at the BJP and the JD(S), accusing them of making politically motivated allegations over the stampede incident. 'Conditional permission' at Vidhan Soudha Siddaramaiah and the other leaders were present outside the Vidhan Soudha near the Chinnaswamy Stadium, where the day's victory march of fans ended and there, they had met the cricketers. According to officials, the police force deployed at the Karnataka Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru had warned against the idea of holding the RCB's celebrations at the grand stairs of the premises, and also raised concerns over the security challenges that would arise due to a shortage of staff at the state legislature's security wing. Despite this, the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR) had granted conditional permission, Mr Siddaramaiah said. "It was the duty of the police to ensure that all conditions were strictly followed. This permission was specific to an event in front of the Vidhana Soudha. However, no untoward incident occurred on the Vidhana Soudha premises. The stampede took place at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, where security arrangements by the police were found lacking. As a result, the concerned officers have been suspended," he said. A day after the incident, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, against RCB, DNA Entertainment and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). According to the state government, DNA Entertainment managed the victory celebrations, while the KSCA organised the event.

BJP Manifesto: Promise Versus Reality
June 9 marks exactly one year since Narendra Modi and his Council of Ministers were sworn in. Before the elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) published a 69-page manifesto. Here are 15 promises from the BJP Manifesto 2024. What is the reality in 2025. 1. Promise: Expanding our efforts to protect garib ki thali (page 11). Reality: According to the World Bank, 7.5 crore Indians earn less than Rs 225 per day. The poorest 5% spend Rs 68 per day. A vegetarian thali costs Rs 77. 2. Promise: Empowering the neo-middle class (page 13). Reality: Between 2014 and 2024, household liabilities have doubled, while net financial savings have fallen to one of their lowest levels in the last 50 years. 3. Promise: Creating high value jobs (page 14). Reality: Since 2021, more and more people have been pushed towards agriculture. Currently 46% of the workforce is engaged in agriculture. Nearly three out of five people are self employed, which experts call 'not the best form of employment'. 4. Promise: Participation of women in the workforce (page 15). Reality: Between 2018-23, the proportion of women engaged in employment-related activities rose by just 2.3 percentage points. Time spent on employment-related activities increased by just 10 minutes over five years. The labour force participation rate for women remains half that of men. 5. Promise: Implementing the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam (Women's Reservation Bill) (page 16). Reality: BJP has 13% women MPs in Lok Sabha. The Bill was passed in 2023. However, it was linked to the Census which is slated to be conducted in 2027. Post Census, the delimitation exercise will be held. It is only after both of these, that the Bill can be actually implemented. When? Anybody's guess. 6. Promise: Strengthening PM KISAN (page 22). Reality: 30 farmers commit suicide every day. Between 2018-23, real wages declined annually by 0.4% in rural areas, while agricultural wages saw an annual growth of just 0.2%. The suggestion made by a Parliamentary Committee to increase funds under PM Kisan to Rs 12,000 has been ignored. 7. Promise: Global manufacturing hub (page 42). Reality: The value added by the manufacturing sector declined from 12.3% of GDP in 2023 to 4.5% in 2024, falling below 2014 levels. Over the past two years, only one in ten individuals have been employed in manufacturing. Between 2015 and 2024, the number of manufacturing MSMEs grew just over 2%. 8. Promise: Expansion of kavach train protection system (page 45). Reality: In four years, Kavach has been installed in just 2% of routes and less than 1% of locomotives. At the current rate of progress, the implementation of Kavach across the Indian Railways network could take a few decades to complete. 9. Promise: Expanding bullet trains (page 46). Reality: The government announced the bullet train project in the railway budget 2014 with an estimated expenditure of 60,000 crore. 11 years later, after spending more than Rs 71,000 crore, less than half the project has been completed. 10. Promise: Expanding expressways and ring roads (page 47). Reality: In 2017, the government sanctioned 34,800 km under Bharatmala Pariyojana. However, only about half of this has been completed. Nearly 25% of the project has not even been awarded as yet. 11. Promise: Developing airports for seamless connectivity (page 48). Reality: 114 routes have been discontinued even before they completed three years. 619 routes were operationalised of which half are currently operational under UDAN. 12. Promise: Combating corruption (page 54). Reality: In the last decade, only two convictions have been made out of 193 cases against MPs, MLAs, and political leaders by the ED. In the last 11 years, a total of 5297 cases were filed by ED. Only 47 were taken to court for trial. For every 1000 cases filed, accused were found guilty in only seven cases. 13. Promise: Strengthening AIIMS (page 57). Reality: 18,737 positions are vacant in AIIMS hospitals across India. More than 2200 of these positions are related to faculty. 14. Promise: Expanding skills training for youth (page 60). Reality: One in three young people in India are neither in education, employment, nor training, with women making up 95% of this group. Only 4% of the youth workforce have received formal skill training. Under the PM internship scheme, one out of five districts had less than 10 internship opportunities available. 15. Promise: Maintaining peace in northeast (page 63). Reality: It has been over two years since the violence began in Manipur. The Prime Minister has not visited Manipur even once. Another broken promise.

Punjab: Veteran leader Dhindsa wanted a united Akali Dal, says Sukhbir
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Sunday said veteran leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, who passed away on May 28 following age-related issues, had asked him to bring all the leaders of the regional party and 'panth' together. At the 'antim ardas' ceremony in Sangrur, he said, 'Just two days before passing away, Sukhdev Dhindsa had told him to gather the leadership and panth to serve the people. The message highlights the importance of a united leadership for the community's future.' On the occasion, leaders cutting across party lines gathered to pay their last respects. Sukhbir said today's leadership should learn from the determination and resilience shown by veterans, including Dhindsa. Terming veteran Dhindsa's son Parminder Dhindsa as his younger brother, he recalled his tenure as the state finance minister during the SAD tenure. Meanwhile, Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar said the Akali factions should unite by setting aside their differences. 'A strong panthic party is required not only for the state but also for the nation. It will be a true tribute to Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa,' he said. 'It must also be kept in mind that due to internal differences, Punjab's great heritage should not be usurped by others, lest the panth, the community and Punjab have to bear the consequences,' he stated. Chief minister Bhagwant Singh Mann sent a condolence message to Dhindsa's family, hailing the veteran leader's role in promoting sports while being the Union sports minister. Besides, leader of Opposition in state assembly Partap Singh Bajwa, Congress leader Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, BJP leader Tarun Chugh, former deputy speaker of the Lok Sabha Charanjit Singh Atwal, Simranjit Singh Maan, Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri, former Akal Takht jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh, SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami, SAD leader Prem Singh Chandumajra, Punjab cabinet minister Aman Arora, MP Gurjeet Aujla and others were present. Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, who breathed his last in a private hospital in Mohali on May 28 evening after a prolonged illness, was a Rajya Sabha MP from 1998 to 2004 and from 2010 to 2022. He became SAD's Lok Sabha MP from Sangrur in 2004. He was the Union minister of sports, chemicals and fertilisers in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. Notably, Dhindsa had in 2018 resigned from the SAD, alleging that the old leaders were being sidelined. In May 2021, Dhindsa and Ranjit Singh Brahmpura, also expelled from the SAD, floated a new outfit, Shiromani Akali Dal (Sanyukt) which contested the 2022 assembly polls in alliance with the BJP. Before the Lok Sabha elections, Dhindsa merged the party with Sukhbir Badal-led SAD in March 2024. In August 2024, the SAD again expelled Dhindsa from the primary membership for allegedly indulging in 'anti-party' activities.
