Sultan Bin Ahmed appoints top officials at University of Sharjah

Sheikh Sultan Bin Ahmed Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah (UOS), has issued a decision regarding the appointment of a Chancellor for the UoS.
According to the decision, Professor Dr Issam Al Din Ibrahim Ajami is appointed as the Chancellor of the University of Sharjah and a member of the University's Board of Trustees.
Sheikh Sultan Bin Ahmed also issued a decision appointing Professor Hamid Majoul Al Nuaimi as an adviser to the President of the University of Sharjah.
According to the decision, Professor Hamid Majoul Al Nuaimi is appointed as the adviser to the President of the University of Sharjah, a member of the University's Board of Trustees, and the Director of the Sharjah Academy of Astronomy, Space Sciences and Technology.
Meanwhile, the University of Sharjah, through the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies, organised a scientific symposium titled 'AI and Digital Twin for Energy Applications,' in collaboration with the Sharjah Electricity, Water, and Gas Authority (SEWA).
The symposium aimed to highlight the applications of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital twin technology, emphasising their role in enhancing energy efficiency and improving institutional services.
The event was attended by Prof Maamar Bettayeb, Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies, along with several research center directors, faculty members, students, and representatives from various SEWA departments.
The symposium opened with speeches from distinguished representatives of UoS and SEWA. Prof. Maamar Bettayeb, Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies, highlighted the strong collaboration between UoS and SEWA across various research fields, emphasising its role in advancing innovation and sustainability.
Prof Abdul Ghani Olabi, Director of the Sustainable Energy and Power Systems Research Center, underscored the University's commitment to impactful research in energy applications.
Ahmed Aylan Alshamsi, Sustainability Engineer at SEWA, spoke on SEWA's efforts to leverage advanced technologies like AI and digital twins to enhance energy efficiency and services.
During the symposium, Prof. Abbes Amira, Dean of the College of Computing and Informatics at the University of Sharjah, delivered a presentation titled 'Driving Energy Efficiency and Smarter User Behavior with AIoT: AI and Energy Applications.'
He addressed technologies and local initiatives involving AI applications across various organisations. Khalid Diab, Customer Service Operations Consultant at SEWA, presented 'Nafaa,' SEWA's AI-powered virtual assistant, which provides fully automated customer support and promptly addresses user needs, ensuring seamless and effective service delivery.
Dr Concetta Semeraro from the College of Engineering at UoS discussed the use of digital twin technology for energy applications.
The event also featured a panel discussion titled 'The Journey of SEWA's Digital Transformation & Using AI in the Service,' chaired by Prof Fatih Kurugollu, Acting Director of the Cybersecurity and Data Analytics Research Center at UoS.
Experts from SEWA and UoS, including Khalid Diab, Anand Subramanian, Prof. Huseyin Seker, and Prof. Mohammad Ali Abdelkareem, discussed SEWA's practical deployment of AI to enhance customer service and achieve key business goals.
The panel also addressed critical success factors for implementing AI, the risks associated with its use, and strategies to mitigate them.
Additionally, they emphasised the importance of collaboration between industry and academia to drive innovation and explored future developments in AI.
In addition, the symposium featured a project exhibition and competition showcasing innovative student work in the fields of artificial intelligence, digital twins, and energy applications.
The event concluded with the announcement of the winners, including Students Omar Al Attar, Idriss Taleb, and Ali Ahmad, whose project titled 'Live Analysis RAG AI Chatbot System for DCMD (Direct Contact Membrane Distillation) Process' stood out for its innovation and technical excellence. The project was supervised by Dr Muhammad Tawalbeh.

Sharjah's ruler further stressed the need to expand the industrial and service sectors through international collaboration. 'We believe that exchanging ideas and visits will help build strong cultural and economic ties that benefit our nations and lead to prosperity,' he added. In his remarks, Dr. Duck-Ho Lim, former president of HYU, commended the far-reaching contributions of the Sharjah ruler across the globe, expressing hope for continued cooperation between the two countries. Dr. Jae-Ok Park, Dean of the College of Graduate Studies, presented a detailed account of the ruler's achievements, which have helped position Sharjah as the cultural capital of the Arab world. He underlined His Highness's various publications and initiatives aimed at enriching the lives of his people. Founded in 1939, HYU is one of South Korea's most esteemed institutions, particularly known for its engineering programmes. Its alumni have made significant contributions to the country's development and technological innovations, both nationally and internationally. The honorary doctorate is one of several international recognitions bestowed upon His Highness in recognition of his leadership in education, culture, and public service.

The Holy Quran Academy in Sharjah has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Sharjah. The agreement aims to develop and advance academic studies, scientific research, and joint research programs in Quranic studies, the sciences of interpretation, and the various modes of Quranic recitation. It also seeks to expand opportunities for the exchange of scientific expertise, contributing to the preparation of national professionals capable of leading and innovating in this field, in alignment with Sharjah's vision of building a sustainable, knowledge-based society. The scientific partnership signing ceremony was held at the Holy Quran Academy, with Dr. Eng. Khalifa Musabah Al-Tunaiji, Chairman of the Academy, signing on its behalf. Representing the University of Sharjah was Professor Dr. Esameldin Agmy, the University's Chancellor. The event was attended by Dr. Abdullah Khalaf Al-Hosani, Secretary-General of the Academy; Professor Dr. Maamar Bettayeb, Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies; as well as several academic and research leaders and department heads from both institutions. This strategic partnership holds great significance for both parties, as it aims to enhance academic research and studies in Quranic interpretation and related sciences. He emphasized that the collaboration supports joint research and serves as a strong catalyst for launching unique scientific initiatives in the service of the Holy Quran and its sciences. He also stressed the importance of forming a dedicated working team to oversee educational initiatives and further develop the strategic partnership, with the aim of enhancing Sharjah's scientific and knowledge-driven role. The initiative also seeks to promote the global dissemination of Islamic heritage, in line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, in advancing scientific research. Dr. Al-Tunaiji affirmed that distinguished scholarly work and its documentation represent a valuable legacy for communities and future generations. Professor Dr. Esameldin Agmy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, expressed his deep pride in signing the cooperation agreement with the Holy Quran Academy. He noted that the agreement, under the esteemed patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, adds great value to the collaboration. He was introduced to its efforts in promoting the values of tolerance and the beauty of Islam through its three main pillars: — The Sharjah Global Digital Quran Recitation Platform, which includes participants from 172 countries and facilitates the granting of Quranic certifications in various modes of recitation. — The Academy's commitment to Quranic research and studies as a top priority. — The Quranic museums, which showcase the history of the Holy Quran's transcription, rare manuscripts, Quranic sciences, renowned scholars, and the covering of the Holy Kaaba. The Chancellor expressed his admiration for the Holy Quran Academy, praising it as a cultural and intellectual landmark dedicated to the preservation, study, and promotion of the Holy Quran and its sciences.
